Ruby
I stare at him. His eyes are closed. His breath is moving in a perfect rythme. The way he broke down in front of them, made me hate myself for bring us here. I knew they weren't gonna accept him, still I brought him. Still I put him through it all. I get out of bed slowly. I get out of the room, making sure to close the door softly. I turn to meet with mom's face. "God, hey mom." I gasp, holding my chest. "I am sorry to scare you." She says. I nod with a smile. "Is it okay if we talk?" She asks.
The sand is getting between my toes as we walk. I have grown taller than my mom. Her hair is pulled into a low ponytail. "How is he?" She asks as we stop, our feet touching the ocean. I look at her. She's asking about Tobias? She looks back at me. "What?" She shrugs. "He's asleep." I turn my gaze back to the blue water. The ocean is sending waves to hit our feet with a small splash. "Is it true?" She asks. "Yeah." I sight. "I am sorry. I never knew." She sounds sad. "I knew that night." My hands in my pockets are sweating. "How old was he?" She asks. "I think middle school." I answer.
"Peter would have been starting high school." She says. I turn to her. "I am sorry." I say. "About what, dear?" She asks. Me and my mother, we were never close. She was always busy with work. "About not being able to save him." My eyes burn as I feel them tearing up. She gives me a soft smile. "No one could've saved him, Ruby." Her hands hold my arms. "I just wish, I could've." My chin wobbles. "I love you, dear. I want you to be happy." She says softly.
"I love you, too, mom." I smile. "He loves you, too. I can see it in his eyes." She pats my shoulders. "Thank you." I throw myself between her arms. A soft chuckle escapes her, as I hug her tightly. She kisses my cheek as we pull back. "Leave your dad to me." She pats my cheek softly. I laugh lightly. "You've been so strong, baby." She kisses my forehead and hugs me once again. Tears fall upon my skin as I hug her back.
I watch Felix as he picks Louisa up on his shoulder. Watching them, his little sister Maya. "Seems that she found someone, don't you think?" He says. I look at him. "I think I found someone." I smile. "Really?" He smirks. I chuckle. "Three days and your dad still wants to punch me, is this normal?" We both look at the porch, where dad and mom along with Reta , Felix's mother. "At least, he's letting it slip." I look at him. "I hope he ends up like Louisa at least." He gives me a worried look.
I laugh at his expression. His blue eyes match perfectly with the ocean. "You're so beautiful." He smiles. "I love you." I smile. "I love you, more." He leans in and plants a soft kiss on my cheek. I lean against his shoulder as we continue to watch the waves hit the shore, along with Maya, Felix and Lou running after each other. I don't think, anything can ever replace this moment right her.
We're happy and together. That's what matters.
