Ruby

The fragile weak body is laying in the bed, that meets the door as I enter. Quinn is sitting by him. "Good morning." I say. "Oh, good morning, doctor." Quinn gets up and gives me a smile. "How is my favorite guy doing?" I smile at Greg. He struggles as he gives me a weak smile back. I grab the board that has his information on it. I take a look at his blood pressure and heartbeat rate.

"Everything looks wonderful." I smile as I hang it back on the front of his bed. "I will go get some coffee, excuse me." Quinn says, walking to the door. I nod to her as she leaves. "Is everything really alright or are you trying to make me feel better?" I turn my gaze towards his weak raspy voice. "Hey. I would never lie to you, big guy." I place my hand on his warm forearm. He smiles. "You did great. Another pet scan to go." I tap his forearm softly.

The door knocks a couple of times, then flies open. A brunette enters the room. Her skin is dark. Her eyes are covered by a pair of dark sunglasses. Her brown hair is long and waved, circling her oval face. Heels cling as she skips to the bed, taking off her sunglasses. Mascara is covering her lashes along with a perfect wing of eyeliner. "Hey, baby." She sits beside Greg. Another tall figure enters, swinging the door closed behind him.

A man in a blue suit and a frameless pair of glasses, makes his way to the bed. His skin is darker than the woman. A black light beard is covering his jaw. A pale green tie is going down his chest. The woman who I assume is Greg's mother, holds his hand in hers, cupping his cheek with the other. "Hey, mom." He weakly answers. I can see his smile. I am glad his parents came by.

"You must be his new doctor." The man turns to me. His voice is deep and hard. "That's me. I am Ruby Clark." I smile, extending my hand. "Nice to meet you." He shakes my hand. He walks to the door. I follow him, leaving Greg with his mother. As I close the door behind me, he stops in front of me. "How is he?" He asks. You can see worry in his eyes, even if he tries to hide it. "He's great, really. The surgery turned out to be a great success." I smile.

"Is it over then?" He crosses his arms. "Cancer is never really over, sir. But, for now, I think he will be fine." I say. He lets out a sight. "It is just. We're not there always. We're working most of the time." His hand covers his eyes. I feel bad for him really. I feel bad for Greg. That at this young age, he still didn't fall in love or graduated high school or got a degree. He doesn't have a life yet. He has nothing except the cancer. It is breaking my heart.

"I will make sure he's alright, sir." I place my hand on his arm. "It's Harry, and thank you." He looks at me. His eyes a bit red. I smile as he smiles back. "I am just doing my job." I nod at him. His palms rub his eyes. "I think you should go in there." I point at the door behind me. He chuckles. I chuckle along. "Wish me luck." He says as I watch him walk to the door.

Louisa left two days ago. Her words keep on running through my mind.

You will have to deal with mom and dad, Rub.

They're scaring the hell out of me. How am I supposed to deal with them. Dad made it quite clear, last winter that dating Tobias isn't a good idea. That he doesn't approve of it. What if mom's mental health gets worse after she sees him? What if they just make him feel unwanted that he leaves again? It's killing me. I can't bear to lose him again. "Hey." Standing at my office's door is Alex. He didn't take the news of me being with Tobias very well, but he wasn't surprised.

"I like you, Ruby! Can't you see that?" He says, his voice full of fury and pain. "I am sorry, Alex. But, I love him." I say, having nothing else to say. He stares at me. I can see pain in his eyes. It hurts me. But, I never felt anything for Alex. He was just really a friend for me.

The memory fades as he takes a seat in front of my desk. "Hey." I smile nervously. "How are you?" He asks. "I am good. You?" I shrug. Being around him isn't as easy as it used to be. " I am okay. Faith says hi, by the way." He says. "I miss her a lot really. How is she?" I ask. "She's getting married in the summer." He says. "Congratulations." I smile. "Yeah." He sights.

"Everything okay?" I ask. "I am just glad you're happy. I am sorry about the whole being mad thing." He gets up. A dark blue suit along with a sliver tie is wrapped him up. "I don't want us to stop being friends, really." I get up and walk up to him. "You can't be friends with someone you like." He shrugs. I know he's right. I couldn't be friends with Tobias back at school. We both felt something that was stronger than our friendship.

"I am always here, if you ever need me, okay?" I wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him into a hug. My heels allow me to place my head on his shoulder. "Thanks." I feel his strong arms as they wrap themselves around my body. We pull back, smiling at each other. "I will leave you to work, then." He awkwardly shakes his body and walks away. I watch him as he closes the door behind him. Breaking his heart definitely wasn't on my list.
