Der Riese (Part 1)
"We're here," Dempsey said.
"Yes, but maybe with speed we have time for drink," Nikolai suggested.
"Not now. We need the telepo--"
There was a long silence after Richthofen was cut off.
"What the hell was that?" Asked Dempsey
"They must have arrived early," Takeo said, drawing his sword.
The group wandered around the area. There was a small but wide staircase that lead to a metal door with a small slit of a window on it.
"Here!" Called Nikolai. "It's a door!"
"Yeah, no shit. Can't see what's inside," Dempsey said, looking over to the door. "Looks like some sword grinding thing."
"Over here! Richthofen, come look," said Takeo.
Richthofen walked over and revealed his pistol, ready to attack whatever it was that Takeo was looking at.
"I think it's one of them," he said.
Richthofen squinted, and from some distance, the first of many zombies lingered closer to the boarded window in front of him. It's eyes were glowing dark blue, and it was staring straight at Takeo. Dempsey noticed what they were looking at and pulled his gun from it's holster.
"You sure that's a zombie?" Dempsey asked.
"Has to be."
Without hesitating, Dempsey shot the creature in it's chest with seven bullets. It finally sunk to the floor.
"There's more where that came from," Takeo said.
"Wha-what? What are you two-three doing over there?" Asked Nikolai, still standing by the door to god-knows-where.
Nobody responded. Instead, Nikolai hopped down and met with them.
"Another door up these stairs. Let's move," Dempsey commanded.
They moved up an even smaller set of stairs and opened up a pair of doors, revealing a room inside and another boarded window. They went left and there was a much larger room. It was filled with barrels and a broken, metal staircase. Takeo took point and headed up those, where he came face to face with a zombie. He quickly drew his small sword out and stabbed its chest without even flinching.
Nikolai saw a dim light coming from a small opening on the other side of the room, which he immediately walked to. There was a small furnace and another boarded window. He barely even noticed that another zombie was trying to tear down the boards.
"HE IS TRYING TO TAKE MY VODKA!" He screamed.
He shot its legs a few times until it fell to the ground. Richthofen walked over at the disruptive shout and saw the zombie's body on the floor.
"How many of these are there?" He questioned. It was so quiet, it was almost to himself. Nikolai didn't reply, instead he walked out of the room and up the stairs to join, or argue, with Takeo.
"These maggot heads don't know when to quit," Dempsey said from behind Richthofen. "I've dropped about four or five while you were over here."
Nikolai and Takeo walked up the stairs and looked to the left. There was an opening in the wall, just big enough for them to fit through. Nikolai walked closer, quickly noticing that it was about a ten-foot drop. As soon as he saw it, he dropped down and hurt his leg a bit in the process.
"You afraid to come down here?" He teased.
"Idiot Russian. Have fun being trampled by a horde while I meet up with the rest," Takeo said before walking away and down the stairs.
"What is this chalk here on the wall?" Asked Dempsey, Staring at some white outline traced on the brick wall. "Looks like a gun-the Thompson."
"I don't need those fools. I've got Vodka and I've got-- ooh what's this little box doing here?"
Nikolai looked at the rectangular wooden box; it had two yellow question marks on it. He opened it up and it started playing a little melody while it spat out a gun. He picked it up, quickly realizing that it was a popular assault rifle called the STG-44.
"No, Dempsey, I haven't seen any more of them yet. Hopefully it stays that way."
"Hopefully not. I can't wait to crack the skulls of these maggot bags!"
Takeo came down the stairs and alerted the group of Nikolai's decision to go on his own.
"He's a drunken fool. Don't think that he's going to stay with us. We need him though, so we must get him back," said Richthofen. "Besides, he has no idea what he's doing on his own."
"Did that just occur to you?" Takeo joked.
"Hey, uh, guys! The-the gun. I pulled it out of the wall!" Dempsey called from outside of the room.
"What?"
"Look. The Thompson. Just reach in and grab it. It's-just reach into the chalk part."
Richthofen reached at the middle of the chalk and the gun appeared in his hands.
"This...is crazy. Who-who did this? He asked. He knew that nobody would respond. He sighed. "Dammit Maxis."
"Who is this 'Maxis' you speak of?" Takeo asked.
"He's...he was...just somebody who created the 115 element. That's what made this happen."
Nikolai wandered on until he saw a control panel with a red lever on it.
"Ooh a button. I-I mean lever," he said before pulling it down. Lots of lights powered on.
"What was that?" Asked Richthofen.
"Probably the Russian. Lets go get him," Takeo replied.
They helped each other down the drop and found Nikolai leaning against the power switch.
"Hey, I did a thing. This-this lever. It's down now."
"Your point?" Asked Dempsey.
"I pulled it."
"And what did it do?" Richthofen asked.
Nikolai shrugged and remembered his other discovery.
"Oh! And-and there's this...box thingy here. Just look inside and it spits out a gun."
"Maxis told me about this," said Richthofen. "I know that it is supposed to give you...something. Something random. That is all I know."
Dempsey looked at it for a moment and lifted up the top. The melody played, calming the group as it cycled through other weapons. Eventually, something strange appeared in the box. It was a toy monkey with wires all around it.
"Dammit!" yelled Dempsey, throwing the plastic monkey on the ground. Nikolai was about to brag about his ability to discover things before something startled them.
The monkey began clapping it's cymbals together and shouting loudly in a high pitched voice.
"Argh! I hate this thing!" Dempsey shouted. "It's so annoying!"
"Wait Dempsey."
"What?"
"Just wait," Richthofen repeated.
Dempsey stared at the monkey for a moment or two. Zombies began rushing towards it from all directions. The undead crowded around the monkey, listening to its noises.
"Ah, the monkey make good distraction," Nikolai said.
"Yes," Richthofen replied. "Use them wisely Dempsey."
Just then, the monkey stopped clattering its cymbals and simply exploded like a grenade. But a smaller explosion. The zombies were affected by the blast and they blew up with it.
"They will never know what hit them!" Takeo cried.
Richthofen stepped up to the box and opened it up. The box cycled through the weapons again before it stopped at a small, red and green handgun looking weapon. Richthofen gasped and took it quickly. He shot it into the air to make sure it was what he thought, and a green ray flew up into the sky and at the full moon.
"Dr. Porter. He made this. It's a better weapon than most, and should prove most effective. Dr. Maxis told me about this as well," Richthofen explained.
"No fair! No fair! I want special gun like you!" Nikolai pouted, walking up to the box again. He opened it up, and the box cycled to something new. It was a small, stuffed teddy bear.
It had blood all over its face and simply floated above the box. Then it rose up very quickly, giving them a very high-pitched laugh before the box disappeared before their eyes.
"You Russian fool! Now what shall I use?!" Takeo scolded.
"How about a gun?" Nikolai said.
Takeo was about to continue the argument until even more zombies came running at them full speed.
"I'm no Zombientolegist like Richthofen," Dempsey began. "But I think we should stay here. No zombies from behind, no more having to watch your back, and we've got this door behind us to open up if things get crazy. Besides, maybe that crazy mystery box thing is in there."
"Lets try not to waste any of our vodka guys. A-alright?" Nikolai stammered. "I-I mean ammo. Heheh, lets not waste our ammo unless it's not being wasted. Alright?"
The group stood in silence after that, waiting for the rest to come running at them.
"You seem like a Zombientolegist to me, Dempsey," Richthofen said.
"Thanks."
Finally, more of the hordes ran to them, very fast
-but not fast enough. Every time they came close, Takeo would use his sword and Nikolai would claim they were stealing his vodka. Their tactics worked out well, and lasted them for a few hours. It was then that they decided they would have Dempsey throw his last monkey and they would run somewhere else, in the hopes that they would find better means of survival.
