ch. 7: Currents
Derek was alive. But Kali wanted blood for what happened to Ennis.
The alarm blared, waking us, and Derek launched up, shutting it off as Cora nodded to the window. "What does it mean?"
We both turned to the Alpha pack's triskele.
The same one that had been painted on the door at our old home.
"It means they're coming," Derek told Cora.
"Tonight," I finished.
*
Cora was told by Derek to go to the school to ask Lydia to stop seeing Aiden when Boyd and Isaac slid open the door to the loft, me sitting on the stairs, looking down at the triskele on the back of my hand, and Derek sitting on the couch as he told them, "Go back to school."
"Well, actually, we can't," Isaac said. "Boyd and I are incredibly and unbelievably sick."
"With what, brain damage?" I asked, looking up.
He ignored that. "Well, I have a migraine, and, uh, Boyd here has explosive diarrhea."
Boyd went on like Isaac hadn't said anything. "We're here to protect you."
"You're here to protect me?" Derek asked, standing up.
"Well, you're in trouble, then," I told him.
"Actually, Boyd here came up with a plan," Isaac said, an open book in his hands, sitting on the table.
"Yeah, I thought about the time Gerard had me and Erica locked up, tied up with electrical wires, pushing current through us," Boyd said, putting his back on the floor, kneeling next to it as I stood up, finally walking toward them. "I was wondering how we could do something like that . . . " He pulled out the wires from the bag. "But on a bigger scale."
*
"In a pool of electrified water, it can take up to 50 milliamps to kill a normal human, less than the power it takes to turn on a light bulb," Boyd said as we readied the plan, the hose already starting to fill the loft with water.
"That's comforting," I said.
"If we disable the circuit interrupter in the building's electrical room, the current will keep coming, and anyone who steps in foot here, they'll get a pretty shocking surprise."
"Especially someone who's barefoot," Isaac said.
*
The whole loft was ready now, and there was literally a pool around Derek, Isaac, Boyd and me, staying completely out of the water, but the light to the alarm system wasn't on.
"Isn't the light on that supposed to be on?" Isaac asked, noticing too.
"Yeah," I answered.
"What does it mean if it's not?"
"Someone cut the auxiliary power," Derek answered.
"What about the main--?" Boyd started to ask when the power went out, all of us standing.
I took the first step into the water, Derek following as I asked, "Derek . . . what do we do now?"
"We fight," Derek answered, already shifting, his eyes glowing red.
*
Kali slid the door open to see Derek, Isaac, Boyd and I standing together. "Gonna be honest, Derek. When Ennis died, I thought to myself I'd just go for it. Find you and kill you, wherever you stood. Then I remembered how you surround yourself with these teenagers, hiding behind them, and I thought, 'What's a girl got to do to get you alone?'" Then, behind her, Ethan and Aiden came into view, a girl in their arms, a clawed hand at her throat, and it got Derek's attention. "You and me, Derek, or they tear her apart. What do you say? You think you can beat me one on one?"
Derek nodded for us to go away, and Isaac and Boyd listened first. Then Derek looked to me, nodding reassuringly, and I was going to follow Isaac and Boyd as Derek turned back to Kali.
"I'm gonna rip you throat out. With my teeth."
Kali growled, Derek roared as he jumped into the air, slashing an arm down from above his head and toward Kali.
*
I had texted Cora, saying: The plan didn't work. They cut the power.
Kali swung an arm toward Derek, which Derek ducked as she spun to face him again, and he spun to face her, the water sloshing all over as they did, and as Derek tried to land a blow on her, she spun in the opposite direction.
Jennifer, the girl they brought, was crying in the twins' arms, trying to struggle her way out.
Kali swung her leg toward Derek's, trying to trip him, but he jumped, dodging, swinging an arm back at her as she stood, but she ducked.
Jennifer screamed.
Kali ran to the pillar, climbing it, spinning to kick at Derek's face, and he fell.
*
Now, Kali was on the table, and as Derek slashed toward her, Kali jumped up, trying to stomp on Derek's arms. When she couldn't, she settled for pushing him away.
*
Derek pushed up from the water, and spinning toward Kali, she jumped off the table, landing in front of him, and kicking him back, making him spin in the air before landing back in the water.
"Derek!" Jennifer screamed.
Isaac took a step toward Kali, and Derek looked back at him. "No!"
"Wait!" I yelled at Isaac and Boyd as they looked toward Jennifer and the twins, pulling them both back.
Derek looked up toward Kali, charging at her again.
*
He landed in the water, slashing toward Kali, but she caught his arm, pushing it away, slashing toward him, but he held up his arm, blocking her move.
Derek growled, Kali letting go, kicking him, and Derek pushed her back.
She kicked up in a back flip, at the same time trying to kick him, but he backed away just enough to where she missed. When she landed, she kicked him back.
*
Cora, Stiles, and Lydia finally made it to the electrical room, and as Kali had a hold of Derek, Isaac ran toward Jennifer and the twins, and they let go of her as I ran toward Kali and Derek, but that was when the electricity started, frying us, not just Kali and Derek, but me and Boyd too. Boyd fell first, sliding closer to Kali's side as I was forced to my knees as the white electrical lights flickered as they forced Kali and Derek to their own knees, all of us falling in the water.
The current stopped, Kali already healing as she looked toward the twins, pointing at Derek. "Take him!"
When they ran forward, I stood, spinning, kicking a leg toward Aiden as he tried to grab Derek's arm, and from behind me, Ethan grabbed both of my arms, and after I had kicked him, Aiden grabbed my legs, both tossing me further away into the water as Kali grabbed Boyd.
I fell to the water, already drenched when I swung my head up, toward them when the twins grabbed Derek's arms, and Kali raised Boyd, lowering him onto Derek's claws as Isaac was still holding Jennifer.
Oh, my God.
Kali let go of Boyd, Ethan and Aiden letting go of Derek, leaving first, and Kali stopped at the door. "I'm giving you till the next full moon, Derek. Make the smart choice. Join the pack . . . or next time I'm killing all of you."
After she left, I went to Derek and Boyd's sides as Boyd said weakly, "It's okay."
"No, no," Derek said. "No, it's not. It's not."
"It's all okay, Derek."
"I'm. . . I'm sorry."
"The full moon. That feeling . . . that was worth it. There's a lunar eclipse. I always wondered what . . . what that felt like for one of us. For one of us . . . "
Boyd was long lost, falling into the water as I knelt next to Derek, stunned into silence as Cora ran to us, kneeling next to me, holding Boyd as she cried.
I heard Lydia behind me, next to Isaac and Derek's girlfriend, and Stiles was behind Derek and me, and hand on Derek's shoulder as we watched one failure--Boyd.
He was dead.
And it was our fault.
