Peds Patient (Arizona Robbins)

Yes another Arizona one - sorry not sorry :)
Inspired by LucyHughes910 comment - (I'm gonna do one where the character is a family member too - probably a sister, imagine how much of a gag it would be if Meredith has ANOTHER sister!!!)

This story takes place when y/n is younger - about 7 years old.

——————————————

"Someone page Robbins!! Now Schmitt!" Hunt shouts as you were wheeled off the ambulance on a gurney.

"What have we got?" Robbins asked as she entered the trauma room you were in. You were still unconscious at this point.

"Young girl - hit and run" Hunt says.

"Who could do that to a child?!" Arizona says, with real pain in her voice.

You groaned as you came around, groggily.

"Woah, ok sweetie - try to stay still for me. My names Dr Robbins. You're at the hospital - you had an accident do you remember?" Her voice was soothing.

You tried to sit up. You were panicked and your surroundings were unfamiliar.

"Hey - it's ok sweetie." She puts her hands on your shoulders, forcing you to look at her.

"Can you tell me your name sweetheart?" She asked.

"Y/n" you said so quietly it was barely audible.

"Y/n? That's a pretty name!" She said giving you a smile.

She noticed that you were still pretty scared.

"My first name is Arizona - like the state!" She joked with you.

"Arizona Robbins" you repeated her full name back to her.

"Yep! Do you have a last name?" She cleverly asked.

"Lots" you said.

"Oh really?" She seemed confused.

"From all the different families" you tell her.

"Oh are you in a foster home sweetie?" She was putting the pieces together whilst distracting you  from Hunt and the interns that were doing your physical exam.

You shook your head.

"Were you in a foster home" she said, she put her finger under your chin to lift your head up to look at her.

You nod.

"Where do you live now then sweetheart?" She continued to question.

Your body tensed again. You lived at the care home a few blocks down. You didn't want to go back though. It made you sad to think that nobody wanted you and the other kids made fun of how many foster homes you'd managed to get through.

"That's ok - you don't have to answer me right now. Just try to relax, ok? I just need to shine this light into your eyes because it looks like you hit your head pretty hard honey. Ok now follow my finger - well done! You did so well sweetie!!" She smiled at you again.

You weren't really paying attention.

"I lost Ray" you say, your voice breaking.

"Who's Ray honey?" She asked.

"He- he's- m-my bear" you said, sobbing at this point.

Maybe it's because you didn't have much being in care but you were really attached to your bear. You'd taken him out with you when you were hit.

"I'm sure he'll turn up darling - take a breath with me ok?" she rests her hand on your shoulder again and rubs little circles. She breathes in deeply and motions for you to do the same.

"Find him please" you begged her, tearily. You made it impossible for her to refuse to help you.

She goes on to say something else but your ears started ringing.

"Arizona" you said, shakily.

She says something else but you couldn't quite catch it.

"I- I- don't f-feel very..." you managed to get out before everything turned to black.

They called a code blue.

Turns out, you had internal bleeding from the accident and your panicking only made it worse.

They took you up to the OR. The surgery was pretty quick - then they took you for a CT scan just to make sure they hadn't missed anything.

You woke up on the Peds ward.

"Hey welcome back!" It was Arizona giving you a huge smile.

You winced in pain.

"Try not to move about much honey - it'll be sore for a while" she tried to reassure you.

You looked around the room, confused.

"You're at the hospital y/n - do you remember what happened?" She asked.

"Arizona" you muttered.

"Yes that's right!" She beamed at you.

"I didn't feel well and then everything got dark and- I don't remember" your lip started to quiver. Truth be told, you were frightened.

"Hey - that's ok! You were hurt pretty bad from the accident which is why you didn't feel well. We fixed you up and you should be ok!" She gave you a reassuring smile.

You nod and stared down at your lap. Hospitals are generally quite scary - but even more so when you don't have any family there to support you.

"I have something for you" Arizona had her hands behind her back and a big grin across her face.

She holds her hands out in front of her revealing that she was holding Ray behind her back.

"Ray!" Your face lit up.

She handed him over and you gave him the biggest hug you could without hurting yourself. Then you turned to face Arizona and spread your arms out calling her in for a hug now.

She wasn't meant to but she did give you a little hug because how could she resist when you were just so adorable?

"Ok now I do have to ask... where do you live sweetie? I need to let them know what's happened" she tells you.

"Don't make me go back" you said, tears brimming.

"Go back where sweetheart?" Arizona asked.

"The home" you whispered.

She sits on your bed next to you.

"Can you tell me about the home honey?" She remained patient with you.

You didn't know where to start.

"It's where they put all the reject kids" you tell her, sadly.

"Reject kids? I don't think you're a 'reject kid'" she says.

"Nobody wants us so they dump us in the home - like a puppy shelter for kids" you say, obviously upset.

"Can I tell you something?" Arizona says.

You nod.

"Puppy shelters always have the cutest puppies - wayyy cuter than anywhere else" she tries to cheer you up.

"I still don't like it," you tell her, "it makes me feel sad."

She tilts her head to the side and gives you an empathetic look.

"I was running away." You confessed.

"Oh honey..."

"I looked both ways before crossing the road - I promise" you say, sweetly.

"I know sweetie - the police are looking for the car now" she tells you.

"It's the home on Ivy street" you tell her where you live.

"Where you live?"

You nod.

"You are super brave!" She compliments you on being able to trust her enough to tell her.

"Don't let them take me though - please!!" You begged her.

"We can talk to them about getting you transferred but that's not my decision honey" she reminds you, gently.

A week later

They were getting ready to discharge you. Arizona had visited you every day - even though she could've just got an intern to check on you because she had bigger, more serious cases being head of Peds. Ray had made friends with the monkey she had stuck to her coat.

It was your last day and you were dreading it. Despite your several requests, your social worker told you that it wasn't possible for you to be transferred to a different home.

Arizona walked past your room on her way to the nurses desk and heard raised voices.

"PLEASE DONT MAKE ME!!!" You bawled to your social worker.

"Y/n - is this how you've been taught to behave?! In life we have to make compromises and this is one of those times!! I don't want to hear another word until we get back to the home!!" Your social worker retaliated.

"PLEASE!!!" You continued to plead with her.

"Hey is everything ok?" Arizona popped her head around the door to check on you.

She'd grown quite attached to you. You reminded her of her younger self - you hated any food that wasn't candy, you get upset when someone with authority tells you off, you love pretending to be a doctor to Ray, and you'd spend your free time colouring pictures of rainbows and unicorns instead of doing your maths homework but then you'd end up doing your maths homework last minute because you were scared of getting in trouble and not getting good enough grades. She knew all these cute little details about you and it made her even more attached to you. You were by far her favourite and she couldn't help but think that she'd met you for a reason.

"Yes Doctor everything's ok - this one's just having a bit of a tantrum - she's overtired" your social worker speaks for you.

"Don't let them take me back please!!" You begged Arizona.

"Y/n stop this! We're not sending you to war - you're coming home!" Your social worker was getting agitated.

You noticed that Arizona had set her suture kit down on the cabinet by your bed as she stopped to talk to you.

Without thoroughly thinking it through, you swiped the suture kit, ripped it open and grabbed the sharpest thing in there - a scalpel.

Your hands were shaking as you held it up to your throat.

"PLEASE DONT MAKE ME GO OR ILL STAB IT INTO MY NECK!!! PLEASE DONT MAKE ME!!! PLEASE!!!" You sobbed, it broke Arizona's heart to see you so upset.

"Y/n! Stop being ridiculous - you're embarrassing yourself in front of the doctor!" Your social worker just wouldn't shut up.

"Ok sweetheart, it's ok. Look at me. You're ok." Arizona was always great at calming you down.

"If you'd like to just take a seat outside?" Arizona gestures towards your social worker. She huffs but agrees.

You were still holding the scalpel to your throat and your hand was shaking violently.

Arizona carefully reaches towards you and rests her hands around yours. She pulls them down and manages to prise the scalpel from your hand. You had a little cut from where you'd been gripping the scalpel so Arizona grabbed some bandages from the suture kit. She sat you down on the bed and pulled your hand towards her. Her hands were soft on yours and she wrapped the bandage around your palm so gently.

"I'm sorry" you say, tears streaming down your face.

She wipes away your tears with her own hands.

"Shh, it's ok. I'm not gonna let her take you - and you have nothing to be sorry for. Just don't scare me like that again - I lo-" she stops herself, "I care about you - a lot y/n, and I'd never be able to live with myself if something bad happened to you. Or to Ray..." She smiles and picks up Ray and hands him to you for support.

"I care about you a lot too" you tell her, sweetly. This makes her smile.

She goes outside and invites your social worker back in the room.

"You're absolutely sure there's no other alternative for her?" Arizona asks.

"No - we can't transfer her because of her recent medical history and there isn't an emergency foster placement available for her" the social worker says, matter-of-factly.

"What if there was?" Arizona asked.

"I've looked everywhere" the social worker said.

"I'll do it. I've got a free room at home - I've got a good job to support us, no criminal record, flexible hours, there's childcare available as part of my job if necessary, and I really care about y/n. If I fill out all the necessary paperwork, do you think I'd be in with a good chance? I've filled similar things in before when I adopted my daughter..." Arizona says.

"I think it's a sweet idea - and hopefully it works out for you both. But it will take weeks for the paperwork to go through so until then, y/n has to come with me." The social worker says.

"Would you really still foster me if I go back for a few weeks?" You ask Arizona.

"Of course I would!" She smiled at you.

"Then I'll go. For a few weeks. Promise me you'll come back for me..."

"I promise."

And she did. Just over a month later, it was official. Arizona was your legal guardian.

You went out to celebrate. She took you to the café for milkshakes. You got most of your milkshake around your face. Arizona had to get a picture. You saw her trying to take a cute photo so you pulled a face.

"You're adorable! I love you y/n!" She exclaimed, giggling at your antics.

She
Loves
You

"I love you too... mama..." you felt comfortable enough to call her that now.

Everything felt right.

Been a minute since I've updated.
Also I had the biggest impulse to just add a stupid sentence to the end of that but I didn't.
I could've ended it:
"And then, you were hit by another car and died lol"
But I didn't.
But I did think about it...

I'm working on requests at the moment...
I'm working on yours next -LUVLEXIE
