Episodio 22, Le regole del gioco

Una bella partita di basket può tenerci incollati alla sedia. I giochi hanno a che fare con la gloria, la sofferenza, si vivono minuto per minuto e poi ci sono anche i giochi più solitari, quei giochi che amiamo fare da soli. Giochi di società, giochi di abilità, li facciamo per passare il tempo, per rendere la vita più interessante, per distrarci da quello che sta realmente accadendo. Alcuni di noi amano giocare e poi ci sono alcuni di noi che amano giocare un po' troppo [...] La vita non è lo sport che vedi in tv, si vince, si perde o si pareggia ma il gioco continua che lo si voglia o no. Quindi va avanti, discuti con l'arbitro, cambia le regole, imbroglia un po', prenditi una pausa e leccati le ferite, ma gioca, gioca, gioca duro, gioca veloce, gioca rilassato e libero. Gioca come se non ci fosse un domani. Ok, non ha importanza se vinci o perdi, ma come giochi la partita, giusto?! (Meredith Grey)

Io dico la verità, è questo che faccio e il farlo non mi rende un cattivo medico. Tutti qui dentro non fanno che mentire. Diciamo ai moribondi che c'è speranza quando invece non c'è. Forse sono un porco, forse un idiota, un parassita come pensano tutti, non importa. Io gli dico la verità, è questa l'unica cosa che conta per me e su questo punto, mi dispiace, non prendo lezioni. Meredith è tutto tranne che fredda. Già, lei sorride, non tanto spesso, ma quando lo fa... Sì, perché lei ne ha passate tante, ma lei ti riempie di affetto. È generosa, ma anche un po' egoista, eccome se lo è. È viziata, ma è generosa. Ama le persone e ha anche molto a cuore tutti i suoi pazienti, credo che sarà un brillante chirurgo. Vede, noi la consideriamo una con cui competere e io credo che abbia preso molto dalla madre, ma... Il resto credo che, tutto il resto lo abbia preso da lei. (George)

Meredith: [voiceover] A good basketball game can have us all on the edge of our seats. Games are all about the glory, pain and the play by play. And then there are the more solitary games. The games we play all by ourselves. The social games, the mind games. We use them to pass the time to make life more interesting... to distract us from what's really going on. There are those of us who love to play games, any games. And there are those of us who love to play a little too much.

Alex: I tell the truth. It's what I do. It doesn't make me a bad doctor. Everyone walks around this place lying. Look we tell a patient that's dying that there's hope when there is no hope. Maybe I'm a pig, maybe I'm an ass, and maybe I'm a vermin like everybody says. But I tell them the truth. It's the one thing that I've got going for me. And you don't get to take that away from me and call it a lesson. Sir.Meredith: [voiceover] Life is not a spectator sport. Win, lose, or draw, the game is in progress, whether we want it to be or not. So go ahead... argue with the refs, change the rules, cheat a little, take a break and tend to your wounds. But play. Play. Play hard, play fast... play loose and free. Play as if there's no tomorrow. Okay, so it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game... right?
