Come medici ci hanno insegnato ad essere diffidenti, perché i nostri pazienti mentono continuamente. La regola è che ogni paziente mente finché non si dimostra il contrario. Mentire è sbagliato, almeno così ci dicono, continuamente, fin dalla nascita. L'onestà è la miglior condotta, la verità ti rende libero, ho tagliato l'albero di ciliegie disse George Washington! Il fatto è che mentire è una necessità. Mentiamo a noi stessi perché la verità ferisce maledettamente. Meredith: [voiceover] As doctors, we're trained to be skeptical, because our patients lie to us all the time. The rule is, every patient is a liar until proven honest. Lying is bad. Or so we are told constantly from birth—honesty is the best policy, the truth shall set you free, I chopped down the cherry tree, whatever. The fact is, lying is a necessity. We lie to ourselves because the truth, the truth freaking hurts.
