˗ˏˋ 14: Dex'ˎ˗

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw KEEFE SENCEN standing in my cousin's room, hovering over her and cupping her face with a worried expression. While she was having a seizure, may I add. I almost wondered why he was there but I really didn't want to know (Later learned that it was completely PG, no funny business involved).

I kicked him out so Grady wouldn't kill him (even though he might've been messing around with my cousin, I didn't want him dead. It'd be a mess for the kingdom) and quickly shouted for my aunt and uncle. Grady ran in with ruffled hair and a baseball bat while Edaline wandered in a moment later, completely calm. Both their expressions changed to fear when they saw Sophie.

I had gotten her onto the ground (so she wouldn't fall off her bed) and rolled her on her side (so she wouldn't choke), something I learned from I don't know where but I know it's supposed to help. Even still, her seizing had gotten worse. Edaline called an ambulance since that had never happened before.

Paramedics soon arrived in an array of flashing lights. Before I could even blink she was gone and I was in the car with my parents, driving right behind the ambulance.

"What happened?" My mom asked from the passenger seat, finally caving to her curiosity about the situation.

"Sophie texted me saying something was wrong and she really didn't feel good so I opened her window that's next to mine—we leave them unlocked so they can be opened whenever—and when I got into her room she was just seizing on her bed in a lot of blankets. I moved her to the floor and put her on her side since that's what you're supposed to do with seizing people."

"Dex's hero complex just got even bigger." Lex joked.

In the minivan my parents bought (they couldn't get a regular car since they had four kids), my parents sit in the front, Rex and I (as the more responsible kids) sit in row behind them, then Lex and Bex have to sit in the very back. No one is allowed to sit in the middle seat to avoid fights.

"Shut up." I leaned back and hit Lex's knee since that's all I could reach.

"Hey, no fighting. We've already got your cousin going to the hospital, don't need any of you to be there, too."

Bex sniffled from her seat behind me. "Is she going to be okay?"

I turned around the best I could to look at her. "Of course she is! It's just a seizure, people get those all the time. She'll be okay, you don't have to worry." I knew Bex was going to be upset about this, her and Sophie had a special bond as the girls of the family. She smiled at me through the rear view mirror.

We got to the hospital and pulled in right behind the ambulance, ending up in the ER with my aunt and uncle. A doctor came out a few minutes later asking for Sophie's family. We all stood up.

"So as you two know," he directed at Grady and Edaline, "she didn't stop seizing in the ambulance, but she did just a minute ago. Because of the length of the seizure, we've decided to run a few tests to see what would've caused it, but first we want to ask about her medical history. Is this her first seizure, or does this happen often?" After Grady responded by saying first, the doctor continued. "Okay, now is there any family history of medical diseases causing seizures?"

"Sophie's adopted, we're not her biological parents. Although from the medical records we have, we don't believe so." Edaline responded.

"Alright, I'll just have some of my coworkers check up on that. Since we don't have anything clear we're looking for, we're wanting to do a blood test, CT, and maybe MRI or EEG if nothing comes through for the previous." Grady and Edaline agreed. "Okay, I'll get back there and get those started right away. I'll also have another doctor come out to fill you in on the rest, we just felt this was most important for now."

"Okay, thank you doctor." Grady said as he gripped Edaline's hand. I sighed and wrapped my arms around Bex when she leapt to me with a hug.

It was only a few minutes of waiting before the promised other doctor came out and filled us in on the rest. They'd given Sophie some clonazepam to stop her seizure, then she was showing some pretty bad symptoms they couldn't pinpoint on one thing so they had to fill her up with a few more drugs that might make her a bit loopy for a while. They only took a blood test and EEG right then, which would take a while to come back but they got them to be quicker based on the severity of Sophie's condition.

The doctor had Grady and Edaline fill out a few forms, half being questions and the others being consent forms for the tests.

An hour later, another doctor came out and took us back to Sophie, since she was finally awake and stable. He stopped us at the door.

"Before we go in I just wanted to talk to you really quick, maybe parents only?" Grady and Edaline told him we could stay, so he continued. "We ran a couple smaller tests based on your answers to the questions and found the problem. She had been taking new medicine for her concussion and had a severe allergic reaction to that, causing her seizure and other underlying symptoms. Paired with her concussion it amplified the effects. It's a new chemical found in most medicines now, which gives a bigger and better effect to them. Since it's now so common, you will have to be extremely careful with which medicines you give her. It's called limbium. Has she ever had a reaction similar to this with certain meds?"

Grady spoke up first. "She doesn't really take any medicine. She hasn't had a cold since we adopted her and she doesn't often get too sick or injured to the point where she needs more than some ibuprofen."

"That's good because ibuprofen is one of the few things without limbium. If she continues on like this she shouldn't have a problem. Now you all can go in to see her, but she will be acting pretty irregular due to the medicine we had to give her to subdue her reactions. She should be back to normal after getting some sleep though. And we would like to keep her at least through tomorrow to monitor her progress." As soon as Grady and Edaline agreed, the doctor let them in.

There was another doctor in there with her, typing something on a computer while looking at some of the machines attached to my cousin. I shivered as I looked at her, a pale, ghostly form of her normal self. Though she was laughing and smiling like she usually would, from what I could assume was because of something the doctor said. He was an interesting looking man, with crazy brown hair, nerdy glasses that looked like they belonged in a fantasy movie, and scrubs covered in unicorns.

"Looks like your family's here, kiddo. I'll leave y'all to it." He said as he stood up and walked away.

"Bye Elwin!" Sophie said in a slurred voice. He waved on his way out.

"Making friends with the doctors?" Kelser joked as my aunt, uncle, and I went to Sophie's side.

"Elwin is... AWESOME." Sophie moved her head in a drunken way. "He told me he believes in magic and superheros, he has a pet ferret, and he's definitely gay even though he didn't say anything like that." Grady laughed and gently ruffled her hair.

"Are you feeling okay? We were really worried about you." Edaline gripped her hand tight.

"Yeah, I feel great! Like Christmas in july... is it Halloween yet?"

"Halloween was a while ago." I answered.

"Oh." Her eyes started to water up. "I want some fruit! Strawberries, and blonde hair." She cried then sighed dreamily. All I could think was, Wow, they must've put her on some strong stuff.

"Sweetie, you have blonde hair." My mom gently told her.

"No," she whined, "I want the blonde hair. The hair." I had never been more glad to be recording something on my phone. I knew it would make great blackmail.

"Maybe you should get some sleep." Bex suggested. I could see she was trembling a bit, most likely because of Sophie's behavior.

"It's three in the morning and even though it's Sunday you still have school on Monday so you need some sleep." My mom added. "You four also need to get some sleep. We'll see you tomorrow." She kissed Sophie's head. We all took turns giving her hugs before getting herded back home.

It was a Sunday so I spent the entire day at the hospital with Sophie . Overall, we had a great time. She was no longer drugged up and she had no memories of that time, so it was hilarious showing her the video taken of her.

"Now, I do have to ask," I started while we were eating our hospital provided lunches, "strawberries? The blonde hair? It's Keefe, isn't it?" She rolled her eyes.

"Yes it's Keefe. He brought me strawberries and told me about The Hair, and now strawberries are my favorite fruit and I can't stop thinking about his amazing hair. Are you happy now?"

I would've burst out laughing at her obvious crush on Keefe, but I decided to let her keep her pride and dignity. At least for a little while.

"Very."

We continued to spend the next few hours binge watching The Golden Girls and laughing. I would never admit it, but I loved spending time like this with my cousin.

Though, it was ruined as soon as I heard the familiar footsteps coming down the hall.

Omg, who is she? Getting another chapter out this quickly? Look at me go. Sorry to leave you guys on a cliffhanger, but after this chapter I can almost guarantee the next one is coming quickly so just hold on tight. I hope you enjoyed the chapter, although I know nothing about seizures or these types of situations, all of my information came from a deep google search. So if any of you have personal experience and find something that's wrong, don't be afraid to tell me. I know for a fact that this probably isn't at all accurate but I'm just dealing with it for now, so yeah. I hope you all have a great day, love you all!
