Chapter 15: Broken
I felt as if time had suddenly stopped.
No, no, she can't be dead
"Maeve? Sweetie are you alright?" Fauna said, cautiously moving towards me. "That's impossible. She can't be dead." I whispered. "I'm sorry Maeve, but she is." Merryweather replied, the sympathy in her tone shining clearly. I was shaking uncontrollably. Is this what emotions are? To constantly be feeling as if life is setting you up, only to disappoint you? I could feel the hot tears pool in my eyes as I gripped my hair tightly. "You're lying. You guys are lying to me!" I cried out, as the tears started to pour out. The fairies sympathetic looks were now ones washed over with fear.
"We need to move her out."
"She'll destroy our home."
"She's a monster!"
Everyone started to panic as they flew around frantically. I looked around me, chaos erupting from every nook and cranny. I inhaled deeply, and pushed my feelings deep down. Every single experience I had with pain, misery, and hurt, has been pushed down and suppressed. I was suffocating, I couldn't breathe. The pain was unbearable, and the chaos seemed to drown out with the constant thump! thump! thump! of my heart. I could feel them slowly piling up-- my emotions. Anything else that could hurt me, will surely push me over the top. I looked to my side and saw Hecate smiling coldly. Did she want this? I shook the thought away. My only friend couldn't possibly be found of this.
Could she?
I closed my eyes tightly and began to murmur calming things to myself. I stretched my hands up and balanced on one foot, feeling the grounds energy vibrating underneath me. I focused on the warmth of the sun, and the beauty of nature. The delicacy of leaves, and the veins that show clearly when you bring it up to the sun. I lowered my hands and brought my foot back to the ground. I opened my eyes and gasped. It was beautiful. Vines had gathered to the center of the village and were shaping into a sculpture of some sort. Bit by bit, it started to form into a human body. The leaves were coiling around each other, creating something that could only be described as pure beauty.
Everyone around gasped. It was a sculpture of my mother, Kelpie. Her face was so delicately formed, raw emotions imprinted on it, her smile was warmly gleaming in the sun, her eyes displaying more emotion, more meaning and depth, then the entire village. Everyone had small tears gathering in their eyes, small smiles flickering across their faces. This was what could only be described as "Unequivocal Love," meaning, love that shows no falter, love without a doubt, love that will burn as long as the eternal flames flicker.
"Maeve, I.." Flora said, her words trailing off as she didn't know what to say.
"My mother was a noble woman, so can someone be so kind as to tell me the cause of her death?" I questioned, my tone stone cold. Everyone seemed to suck in their breath as soon as the words left my mouth.
Silence.
Merryweather spoke up. "Maeve, honey, tell me, what do you see?"
I narrowed my eyes. "I'm assuming your looking for a better answer then just 'a bunch of fairies.'
Everyone gathered around suppressed a giggle, while some were snorting, not even trying to hide their laughs. Merryweather started to grumble a sentence that started with, "You kids."
A young male fairy stepped up. "I see hope," he offered, while gesturing to the newly formed statue of my mother.
"I see an invigorated culture."
"I see faith."
"I see light."
"I see darkness.." A voice whispered, but was barely recognizable.
"This was very sentimental or whatever, but that still doesn't answer Maeve's question? What happened to her mother?" Hecate said with an innocent glare in her eyes.
After a moment of silence, someone answered. "She-she was murdered.."
What
I inhaled deeply before opening my mouth. "Who killed her, and how was she killed?" I asked coldly.
Everybody remained silent, not daring to open their mouths, fearing what could happen.
"Answer me, now," I demanded, biting the inside of my cheek so hard I started to feel the metallic taste of blood drip onto my tongue.
"She was found at 2:00 am dead in her bed. We're not sure who the killer is, but we do know how she was killed." Someone offered shyly.
I searched for their voice but couldn't find it.
"She was killed by the Whispering Spell."
Just as I thought the pain couldn't get any worse, it did. The Whispering Spell was something used a long time ago, in the era of dark magic. It was worse than death itself. The spell itself was used quite often in the era of dark magic. Kids would grow up listening to lullabies inspired by the spell. It was sickening. Soon over time, the spell had faded, but the memory of its existence still lives on.
"Maeve!" Someone shouted, waving their hand back in forth in front of my face rapidly. I blinked twice before swatting the hand away.
"What?" I answered sharply.
"We want to show you something." I looked down to see the voice belonged to a small child, no younger than 8. I smiled, feeling a tiny jab of guilt for snapping at them earlier.
"Okay," I replied happily, following the eager little fairy. I was led to a beautiful park area, that I used to play on when I used to live here. I looked around me and the sights were absolutely beautiful. I gasped lightly as I saw a wonderous sparkling fountain, the water was crystal clear with the fragmented sunlight shining on it. I walked over to the fountain, small tears in my eyes.
FLAHSBACK
"Maeve, do you see that fountain over there? The one that just breaks the sun dipping into the sky?" My mother, Kelpie, asked. I looked around for a little, my eyes lighting up when I saw the fountain.
"I see it mommy!" I exclaimed excitedly. My mother glanced at me happily, and another emotion swirled into her eyes that I couldn't quite figure out. "Now, I want you to take this coin." She said, taking a small coin out of her bag. "And wish on it, wish for whatever you want darling."
"Okay mommy," I said, taking the coin from her hand, and grabbing it in my chubby hands. My mother smiled lightly as she watched me go over to the fountain, close my eyes, and mumble some incoherent words.
"All done mommy!" I exclaimed happily as I skipped back to her."
"All in a days worth my dear, all in a days worth," my mother said, closing her eyes while I gave her a confused glance.
FLAHBACK ENDS
"I-I think I should get going now, b-back to the kingdom," I said wiping my eyes hastily, stuttering slightly.
"Stay." A voice spoke up.
I froze in my spot.
"Yeah, stay," another voice said. "You could train with us, and live your life as a fairy."
"No, you can't stay," Hecate said, shaking her head vigorously. "You don't belong here, and you never will, you would be a danger to all."
Just as I felt myself wanting to stay, the feeling disappeared just as quickly as it came.
"She's right. I can't stay. It was nice coming here and seeing some familiar faces."
With that said, I walked out the gates to home, forever.
