Chapter 14: Going Home
"You ruined my dress," Hecate said, barely above a whisper.
"Do you know how long, it took me to save up for this? It took me a year. One whole year." She growled lowly.
I laughed nervously as I slowly backed away. She took a deep breath and started to mutter to herself
"Soon...Baby..Curse," I managed to make out. What?
"I think we should head back to the village.." I said nervously.
Hecate plastered a fake smile on her face and said through her teeth, "No need, I want you to show me something else," she said mischievously. A flash of concern flickered across my face, before I asked, "What is it?"
"Take me to you're home," she said smiling innocently.
I felt all the blood drain from my face and words seem to have failed me. "M-My home?" I stuttered.
"Yes, is there a problem?" She said coldly. I gulped. "No." I whispered.
"Great! Let's go then," Hecate said clapping her hands together. I clasped my hands behind my back and squeezed them tightly.
I suppose it's time to go home.
***
Hecate and I walked for what seemed like hours. Each second was like a tiny needle, puncturing my heart. I wanted to see my mother, more than anything. I just didn't know how I could face her. After all the mistakes I made, all the grief I went through. I took a deep breath to calm my racing thoughts. There were so many things I missed out on.
My childhood was robbed form me, and for that, a part of me would forever be gone. Sucked into the hands of time, and never to be retrieved. I got snapped out of my thoughts when I heard Hecate singing softly.
The ogres watch over you
The stars will align
The fairies mist, a true loves kiss, oh what fun tonight
An ugly frog, now turned into beauty, oh what a wonderous sight
The beast in the meadow shall prowl in stealth
Its emerald gleaming eyes
Its emerald gleaming eyes
Dragons and wizards
Mermaids and fairies
Poisonous berries are found deep within
Spells and hexes are true
All to the end, a witches brew, oh what fun tonight
Oh what a wonderous sight
By the time she finished, I had tears streaming down my face. It was an old lullaby my mother used to sing to me. I closed my eyes and pictured her stroking my hair gently and singing the song, using her fingers to create small projections of wonderous things. The cackling fireplace was brought to life and was shaped into a small dragon, flying around us. I could feel myself drifting away from reality, and slowly falling into the fantasy world. As I was slowly drifting, a thought slowly pulled me back to reality. How would Hecate know that song?
"Hey Hecate?" I asked.
"What do you want?" She said, with an irritated tone. I took a deep breath. "How do you know that lullaby?" I questioned her, a fake smile plastered over my nervous expression.
Her face blanked out for a second, the color draining from her face. "What?" She asked, the color slowly coming back to her face. "I asked how you knew that song." I retorted.
Hecate slowly muttered something under her breath that was too quiet to fully comprehend. When she finished muttering she snapped her hands.
I slowly felt all the memories of the song drain from my mind, like getting sucked down a drain into the abyss of time. My mind felt empty, and blank for a second. I didn't see anything, hear anything, feel anything, taste anything. It was like my mind and body were two separate things, each one out of sync without each other. The scariest part, was that I felt just as I did before. I felt absolutely nothing. I was empty.
"Maeve?" Hecate said unsurely. I shook my head lightly and stumbled a bit. "What happened? Where am I?" I said, looking around at my surroundings. "You fell and hit your head then blacked out for a second." Hecate said, the words slowly rolling off her tongue without a hesitation. "Oh, okay," I said, my hand unconsciously reaching up for the back of my head, feeling for a wound. "There's no need for that, I inspected it, there was nothing there," She said with a cold, emotionless, stern tone. I nodded slowly.
"Now, let us continue our journey." She said, pushing me in front of her gently, the gesture suggesting I lead the way. We walked on for a while, the warm sun gleaming on our dark skin as the sun set. I could almost see the gleaming golden gates. I inhaled deeply before stepping through the thick, dense, branches of the forest. And there stood the gates to my home.
***
I stood in front of the gates and closed my eyes, a single tear dripping down my face. I set my thumb on the gate and twisted it slightly, the loud click of the gate opening. Cracks of light shot through the air, the beams lighting up the dark forest surrounding us. We stepped through the gates, and I saw my home. The tears came down my face and didn't seem to ever stop. I watched as life thrived in the kingdom, fairies fluttering around and playing peacefully with each other. It seemed as if everyone stopped their activities when they saw me.
"Isn't that Kelpie's child?" Someone whispered.
"Wasn't she banished?"
"What is she doing here?"
"Poor thing, she probably doesn't even know.."
I looked around at my used to be friends. "What are you guys talking about? Where is my mother?" I asked, worry creasing my forehead. I looked to my side and saw Hecate glint evilly, but concealed it with the same look of concern I was wearing.
"We can't tell her.. her emotions.."
"But she doesn't have any emotions."
"I do have emotions." I said quieting down the rumors. "I have been banished for 6 years. I think I deserve an explanation." I retorted, panic seeping into my voice by the second. My mothers close friends, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather stepped up.
"Maeve.." Flora said trailing off
"Your mother died a year ago."
