Chapter 13: Making Friends

I heard the soft, subtle sounds of the leaves crunching underneath my feet as I walked through the forest. I was almost back to my house after the entire incident, and I wasn't the most excited person in the world. I didn't want to go back to the village and face all of the people there, and getting all the nasty looks of disgust, shame, and most of all, fear.

Fear was one thing I didn't have to worry about back at home, because we were all the same. Home was where I had friends. Where I had family. Home was where I belonged. So today I decided, I would make some friends.

I walked for what seemed like hours, (but in reality was only like 20 minutes) and I got to my house. Now that the odor was gone, I could focus on what it looked like on the inside. I couldn't even stare it it for long, its grey,  bleak appearance already dampening my mood. I inhaled and exhaled hastily.

I don't have time for this.

I turned on my heels and slammed the door, making sure to scare away any mice or rodents that were scurrying around in there. I started to make my way towards the market. A stupid decision, I know, but where else to go when your a desperate girl looking for some friends? I lowered my head scarf, covering my face and continued to walk, making sure not to make eye contact with anyone. Then, I felt someone bump into me, the sudden impact sending us both crashing towards the ground, which greeted me like an old friend when I fell. Before I even looked up I had a feeling who they were.

"Sawyer I swear you need to get some glasses, your perception is really-" I stopped talking when I looked up and saw it was a young lady. She had light brown skin, with dark green eyes, a perfect nose that turned slightly upwards, beautiful, thick, short wavy brown hair, and had a small mole that stood on the upper left side of her face. She looked vaguely familiar, but I couldn't quite place my finger on it.

"Oh!" I said startled. "My deepest apologies." I said sheepishly.

"No, it's quite alright," The young women said with a strong, powerful voice.

"I'm Maeve, and you are?"

"Hecate." She said, smiling coldly.

"Huh, that's weird. It's like I know you, but almost in a memory-like sort of way." I said, my mind filled with confusion.

"Good," she said so quietly I couldn't hear her.

"What was that?" I asked her, putting a hand behind my hear, signaling the famous gesture.

"Oh, I just said 'weird' that's all," she said chuckling softly with an eerie tone to her words.

"Anyways, I would like to get to know you better, is there a chance we could go walking through the meadow later today?" I asked nervously.

"Well, I don't have any plans today, so why wait that long? Let's go now." She said in a playful/authoritative tone.

"Alright then!" I said excitedly, ignoring the warning signals that were being sent from my conscience.

Stop this, you don't even know her

Exactly, so how am I supposed to know if she's good or bad?

Well, you could always test her

How am I supposed to do that?

I don't know, just figure something out. You should always trust your conscience.

The same conscience that was convinced that goats were just cows with horns and devil eyes?

Oh shut up

Exactly

I was too busy arguing with myself to realize that Hecate was nowhere to be seen. Weird.

I told you so

"Sorry about that, I just needed to put on my clogs," Hecate said walking up to me, struggling to slide her petite foot into the shoe.

"Ha, you see? I was right" I said, continuously arguing with myself.

"Huh?" Hecate said confused.

My face immediately turned beet red. "W-Well, it was just that thing you know? And the-the thing was with the man and they talked and stuff," I said, rambling on about nonsense. Hecate stared at me with confusion in her eyes.

"Nevermind," I muttered underneath my breath. "Let's just go to the meadow."

"Okay," she said, nodding slowly.

The walk to the meadow was long and quiet. Every time I wanted to break the silence, it seemed as if she would just magically silence me. I wondered for a second,  "What if she's a fairy? Just like me?" I quietly pondered the possibilities, but after a while I came to a conclusion. You see, if she was a fairy,

1) I would have seen her in the fairy kingdom

2) She doesn't look like she has magic

3) I don't recall anyone other than myself getting banished

I nodded to myself, happy with my reasoning and continued to walk onwards.

Finally, after about 2 bathroom breaks, 1 picnic, 7 "short" breaks, and an hour later, we made it.

I looked around me and stood in awe of the sight in front of me. The beautiful, tall magnificent trees swayed with the melodic breeze. The bright green blades of grass seemed to have shimmered whenever the sun shone down on them. The clouds where as white as snow, and as puffy as marshmallows. I inhaled deeply, never wanting the moment to end. But as I was inhaling, the most horrid smell invaded my nostrils.

"If your done inhaling horse poop like it's crack, I could really use some help spreading out this sheet," she replied, the smallest, tiniest hint of annoyance found in her tone.

"Yeah, of course," I said, grabbing two ends of the sheet and spreading it on the grass, sitting on it quickly before the wind blew it away. Hecate did the same. I reached over her to try and grab my satchel of water, and by doing so I accidentally spilt some water on her. She groaned in annoyance and quickly sat up, the water spilt on her slowly running down her blouse and onto the sheet.

"I am so sorry, please let me help," I exclaimed, looking around for some napkins. I didn't find any. All I saw where some leaves. That's it. Leaves. I grabbed one and rapidly began wiping in on her dress.

"What are you doing?!" Hecate exclaimed.

"I'm. Getting. The. Water. Off. Your. Dress." I said, grunting while rubbing it on the blouse.

"That's not how it works," Hecate said unimpressed.

I began to slow down, but noticed something had happened. The chlorophyll had stained her white dress. An expensive looking white dress. A white dress now stained with chlorophyll.

"Umm, Hecate, I think I may have, kind of, certainly... ruined your dress," I said, rushing the last sentence out so fast, hoping she wouldn't hear it.

"You what?" she said, barely above a whisper.

"I said, I think I ruined your-"

"I HEARD YOU THE FIRST TIME!" She yelled, more angry than I could have ever seen before.

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw dark, grey clouds gathering.

Looks like you found your way to test her
