CHAPTER 11:
Complicated.

"Maybe she's just tricking you?"

I sighed, "No, you don't get it. Mari is the sweetest, kindest, and most misunderstood girl I've ever met. She never wanted people getting close to her because she feared that they'd just use her in the end, and she built up a barrier. Demetri, if she finds out that I was dared to date her, she will never forgive me."

"You really like her," Hawk realized.

"Yes!" I exasperated.

And I don't want to lose her.

But I don't want to be the thing she hates.

"Then just don't tell her. Simple as that," Hawk shrugged, tossing his arm over my shoulder.

"Eli!"

"What? If he wants to save his relationship, then don't tell her. What's one lie gonna do?" Hawk was right, in a sense. If I told Mari that it was a dare to ask her out but that I ended up liking her personality and who she is, she'd think it's bullshit.

She'd never trust anyone again.

And I can't put her through that.

"Hi," Mari came up behind me in the cafeteria, losely hugging my neck before sitting down.

"Hey. How was Geometry?"

"Not as hard as I thought," She said as she opened up her lunch, "I got a ninety-eight on our pop quiz."

"Mari, if you found out that someone was lying to you, what would your reaction be?" Demetri questioned and I kicked his leg from under the table, and Mari raised her brow at him.

"Why?"

Shit.

"Personal stuff," Hawk quickly stepped in.

"Oh, well, if it was me, then I'd cut them off altogether. There's no reason to waste my time on someone who isn't truthful," She explained.

She's right.

"Guys, can we get some spa-?"

"Oh my god, Mari, we completely forgot. I'm so sorry," Hawk spoke over me, grabbing our bags, and getting up.

"What?" Mari asked.

"We bombed the Algebra test, and Mr. Higgins told us to come in during lunch to make it up," Hawk lied as he grabbed me and started to drag me out of the lunch room.

"Oh, okay. See you soon!" Mari waved as I stumbled out with Hawk, leaving her with Demetri, who should have gone with us or he might spill everything.

And before I could stress to Hawk even more, he turned to me.

"I have a plan, and it might sound crazy, but it just might work."
