If I Met Bill Cipher, Part 2
Tuesday was cloudy. The daily news predicted rain and one student felt like her world had changed forever. She had been less happy lately and much more subdued and angry. In her first period she even fought with a classmate about whether the Thirteen Colonies were British or American. She felt like she was losing touch with herself. The only time that she felt good was when she was left alone. Maybe she just felt too crowded and stressed during school, she thought. Nonetheless, Molly's world had turned upside-down; something she had not expected would ever happen.
Her bag weighed heavily on her fatigued shoulders as she trudged, unhappily to class; wondering why school couldn't start later and end earlier. Her legs hurt just from climbing the two flights of stairs and her eyelids drooped; it was way too early for stairs. Finally, she stepped into her class. Thankfully, this class was just a sort-of attendance class. The teacher sat at the desk, called for attendance, and then just made the students wait until the bell rang.
She sighed as she dropped her bag off of her shoulders and plopped into the chair. Lying her head on her arms, Molly closed her eyes and let out a long, yawn. She could probably catch some shuteye after she was called for attendance. The girl had no time to think about that, though. As, the wooden table beneath her slowly turned grey.
She sat up, no longer feeling tired, and observed her surroundings. She was still there, but not there. The classroom had its color drained, left as a black, grey, and white portrait; the students sitting at their desks, looking at phones, and talking to friends all frozen in time.
"SURPRISE! DIDJA' MISS ME?" A high-pitched, distorted voice called out above her, echoing around the silent room.
"To be honest, no. The only thing I missed was that book you took from me."
"AW," the voice chimed, playfully. There was a small flash as a small, yellow, two-dimensional triangle appeared, floating in front of her. A large eye was placed in the center of his body above a tiny bow tie; above his top corner floated a small, black top hat; and little, black stick-like arms and legs protruded out of his sides. He seemed to grin, despite having no mouth, and continued. "I RETURNED IT, THOUGH!"
"The spine was bent and pages were folded."
"SO WHAT? YOU GOT YOUR PRECIOUS BOOK BACK!" He put his hands on his sides as if putting them on his hips and then took one of them off, using it to twirl a cane that just materialized out of thin air. "SO, HOW'S LIFE BEEN, KID?"
"Fun."
The creature chuckled, "SURE SOUNDS LIKE IT! DON'T LEAVE ME HANGIN', KID! I WANNA HEAR THE DETAILS!"
"Don't you 'see all'?" Molly asked, making finger quotations, "You tell me."
"MMM-NOT REALLY! YA' SEE, THE ONLY THINGS THAT I CAN SEE FROM ARE PICTURES OF ME AND, WELL, NOBODY REALLY VANDALIZES PROPERTY ENOUGH, THESE DAYS. GOOD THINKING, THOUGH!"
"I see," She took a breath and sighed, adjusting herself in her seat. "Well, I hate a certain teacher, have multiple tests, too much homework, not enough sleep, and my cat died."
"YEESH, IS THAT ALL?" He asked, sitting on the table in front of her, hanging his legs over the side of the table facing the girl. "TRAGIC, KID. TRAGIC."
"Hah, sure, maybe to me, but to you?" Molly shook her head, "You're just trying to lead me into a false sense of security before hitting me with something awful."
"SMART KID! YOU KNOW ME WELL!" He paused. "A BIT TOO WELL."
The girl didn't respond; she just stared at her hands silently. Her eyes scanned each finger, looking for any imperfections and marks until landing on her left middle finger. Her lucky birthmark; as she'd come to call it; looked back at her. After seeing the mark, the corners of her mouth turned up in a slight smile.
Meanwhile, Bill was watching her actions carefully. His eye squinted in such a way that made him look like he were raising his eyebrow.
"BOY, HUMANS SURE DO HAVE SOME WEIRD MARKINGS. I MEAN, I UNDERSTAND SPOTS ON YOUR BACK, BUT ON YOUR FOREHEAD OR FINGER?"
"Yeah, I guess we're pretty special, huh?"
"I NEVER SAID THAT."
Molly giggled, shrugging. She didn't know how to respond. Then, she thought of something.
"Does your kind ever get birthmarks or sunspots or anything like that?"
"UH, NO. THAT WOULD BE WEIRD."
"Hmm..."
"SO, HOW'D HE PASS?"
The girl stiffened up.
"Who?"
"THE CAT; AUSTIN, OR WHATEVER-HIS-NAME-WAS."
"He-he had a cancerous tumor growing too close to his heart. He could barely breathe and-," She stopped, her breath catching in her throat. Her eyes had welled up and began to release tiny, sparkling droplets of salty water. The tears rolled down her cheeks, leaving a trail of water behind them. The demon saw this and smirked, chuckling.
"YOU DON'T HAVE TO FINISH THE STORY! I SAW YOUR MIND THROUGH THE VESSELS THAT YOU MADE FOR ME!" He laughed again, mocking her.
"You-you jerk! I knew you'd do this!" She sniffed, wiping her eyes with her arm.
"HAH! HUMAN FEMALES ARE SO EMOTIONAL! I COULDN'T HELP IT, DOLL!"
Molly huffed and crossed her arms, tears still streaming out of her eyes.
"WOULD IT HELP IF I PLAYED SOME MUSIC FROM THAT EMO BAND YOU LIKE?"
"Emo band? You mean the Gorillaz?" She raised an eyebrow, wiping her eyes with her sleeve once more.
"YEAH, THEM!"
"They're not emo," She giggled, her mood changing a bit. "They're just-," she snickered, stopping mid-sentence.
"JUST WHAT?"
"N-Nevermind."
Molly was grinning a bit now. Her tears had become fewer and seemed to be drying.
"THAT EASY? WOW."
"What's easy?"
"YOUR MOOD SEEMS TO SWING AN AWFUL LOT!"
"Hormones...Hormones."
"AH. WELL, SEEMS THAT OUR TIME," he said, producing a large pocket watch out from behind him and looking at it, "IS JUST ABOUT UP! I GOTTA GO!" He snapped, the watch disappearing and his hand moving to his hat to tip it. "SEE YA LATER, KID! STAY WEIRD!"
"Yeah, see ya."
"OH, AND KID? I THINK THAT YOU SHOULD TRY WRITING SOMETHING TO DO WITH THAT BAND YOU LIKE SO MUCH!"
"Sure. Yeah, I'll think about it."
In a flash, the girl's eyes snapped open. The room was filled with motion, sound, and color once again and, as the bell rang, Molly smiled.
