Will You Marry Me? [AU]
Will You Marry Me?
This fanfiction is purely fan-made. I don't own the characters, duh. Hope you enjoy this- it was based off of a short film I watched today.
This story feels like a Bottom!Gray but it's not really necessary so it doesn't really matter.

Rings.
I had seen them on happily married men and women, varying between simple gold bands to intricate, expensive diamond-encrusted ones. They always shined so gorgeously in the daylight, matching the gleam of the happy smiles of their owners.
I had always wanted a ring from my significant other.
Too bad my boyfriend, Gray, didn't give a shit about things like that.
I had hinted at wanting some sort of ring- leaving jewelry catalogues open to specific pages, keeping Bell's Jewelry open on my laptop, or staring a second longer than I should've when we passed a jewelry shop when went to the mall.
Gray never noticed- he simply dragged me along to the food court or Zumiez.
One day, we were walking down through our city, Magnolia, a beautiful town that was perfect for walking around, since it had so many parks, shops, and fun things to do. Our hands were intertwined and we were both holding a shopping bag. I had bought some new sneakers, but Gray had gone off mysteriously today. I had no idea what he bought.
A small part of me was wishing it was a ring. I wanted Gray to propose. I wanted him to slip the ring on my right ring finger, resembling our unification for the rest of my life.
I pressed the button on the street intersection for us to cross the street. We stared wordlessly as we waited for the red stick figure man to flash green to signal us to walk. Before it did, Gray spoke up.
"Natsu, I can't hold my excitement in anymore. I bought something for you today," Gray grinned shyly, fiddling with the strings of his tiny bag. Tiny enough to hold a ring box, but a bit bigger.
"Oh, really?" I reciprocated mischievously, eying the package gleefully. "What is it?"
Gray let go of my hand and pulled out the present of the bear. I thought he was going to get down on one knee, but he remained vertical. In his hands was a small teddy bear.
I tried to hold in my anger, but it was no use. I was seething red. "Oh... You got me a bear!" I said in a high-pitched one.
Gray put it in my hands, his smile practically stretching across his face. "Yeah! Natsu, I-"
"No, I get it," I snarled. "I can't take this anymore! I've tried time and time again to make it glaringly obvious I wanted a ring from you, but you didn't notice! You never notice! You're so stupid, Gray! I don't want a damn teddy bear, I want a ring and a proposal!" I screamed, throwing the bear as far as I could away from me- I couldn't stand to look at it anymore- and ran the other direction, upset and angry tears falling.
"No!" Gray shouted behind me, diving for the bear. Above him, the stick man still hadn't turned green. He scrambled into the middle of the street, fingers barely clasping around the bear before two bone-jarring bumps were heard.
I turned around in a flash, only to find a devastating pool of blood and Gray, who looked really, really bad. His spine made his back look misshapen, his legs were bending in ugly ways, and blood was coming out of his mouth as he coughed weakly.
The car swerved to the side and parked. The driver tumbled out of his car, pale as a ghost. He ran to Gray, but I got to him faster. "Oh my God! Gray!" I screamed, kneeling next to him. "Someone! Please help him!"
The man met me at the intersection, collapsing to his knees. "No..." He whispered. "I'm so sorry," He said. I didn't know if he meant that to him or me, but I barely heard him anyways. I had pulled out my phone, swiping by the wallpaper of me and Gray, and was dialing 9-1-1.
"I need help!" I cried when the dispatcher greeted me. "My boyfriend just got hit by a car!"
"Okay, please stay calm. Where are you?" The woman asked.
I looked up at the sign. "On the corner of Fairy Street and Lamia Boulevard," I answered breathlessly, tears pouring down my face in streaks. "Hurry please," I begged before hanging up. "Gray! Can you hear me?"
No answer.
The paramedics came in less than three minutes. I would've been impressed if I wasn't so worried and scared. One of them led me into a squad car while two others put Gray on a stretcher and wheeled him into the back of an orange and white ambulance.
"No!" I screamed, thrashing around. "I have to be with him!" I begged, trying to get out of the calm police officer's grasp. "Let me go, you bastard!"
"The ambulance will get your friend to the hospital faster. We can't delay them anymore or there will be no chance," The police officer claimed. "Come on, kid. Let's get going. And... I'm sorry."
I gulped, buckling in. It took me four tries, considering I was shaking so hard. We were out of the scene in a matter of minutes, speeding along the road to the hospital in no time.
The police officer took me to where I needed to wait until I'd receive news. I thanked her and took a seat in the cold grey chair, bringing my knees to my face and praying Gray would survive.
I didn't go buy food from the vending machine. I didn't pick up a magazine. I simply closed my eyes and waited for six hours. I felt numb after all that time had passed. I barely even registered when the Authorized Personnel sign swung open, revealing a surgeon in pistachio-colored scrubs and a dentist mask and hairnet over her face.
"Natsu Dragneel?" She called. I waved weakly, feeling my heart race at twice its typical speed. "Hey, Natsu, are you okay?"
"No," I answered honestly, my voice cracking from all the crying. "I'm really not fine at all."
The woman took a seat across from me, her long, slender legs crossing as she peeled off her mask and letting it hang loosely around her neck. "I don't know how to sugar coat this, but... Gray's condition is fatal. He's broken his spine in three places, thirteen ribs, and fractured his skull, which should kill just about anyone immediately. If he was to live, he'd live a miserable more 5 years or so, due to the implications. So... The doctors ended it," She explained regretfully.
I felt myself swaying. "I feel like I'm going to throw up," I wailed, bending over. I began to shake back and forth, crying. The woman rubbed my shoulder in a weak form of condolence. "This is all my fault."
"Apparently this was left on the scene. I bet Gray would've wanted you to have it," She took out the bear from behind her, setting it in my hands. "Feel better, Natsu. I'm sorry about your loss."
She left quietly, her sneakers squeaking against the floor. I stared blankly at the bear, which had traces of dirt on its fur now. I didn't feel angry about the bear anymore, only reluctant. If only I had just accepted the bear, Gray would still be with me now, and we'd be cuddling and watching reruns of Friends.
The bear was extremely soft, and it had a cute red t-shirt on. Smiling the tiniest bit, I squeezed the bear in a hug to my chest. That's when I heard it.
"Will you marry me?" The bear asked. It was Gray's voice, awkwardly high-pitched in order to sound like a baby bear's.
I looked at it in shock for three seconds before squeezing it again to make sure it wasn't a fluke. "Will you marry me? Will you marry me? Will you marry me? Will you marry me? Will you marry me? Will you marry me?" I squeezed it over and over.
"Oh my God..." I whispered, turning the bear around. I wanted to check something.
I pushed the bear's shirt up, revealing a back zipper compartment. I slowly unzipped it, put my fingers inside, and felt them touch something cold and metallic.
No. It couldn't be...
Inside the bear.... was a ring.
