Through The Years

So, this is a double dedication to the amazing @Tottosmile! It's not only her birthday on 11/26/14, but she also won a contest of mine wayyyy back and I never did a one-shot request for her! Anyway, I hope you like it, Tyranosaurus Rex! x

This one shot will be mostly dialogue. It goes through the years of their life and what happens over the course of thirty years or so. It's something I've seen around on Wattpad and I've always wanted to try.

IMPORTANT! IMPORTANT! DO NOT SKIP OVER THIS WARNING! THERE MAY OR MAY NOT BE TRIGGERING THEMES TO THIS ONE SHOT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Age: 4

"Why is your hair pink?" Gray stomped up to Natsu imapatiently.

"Why is yours black?" Natsu retorted.

"Black is a normal hair color!" He defended himself.

"You're weird!" Natsu pointed.

"Hey... wanna go color? My mummy bought me this super cool Spiderman coloring book!" Gray ignored him, offering to do something else.

"Spiderman?" Natsu repeated curiously.

"Yeah! He's awesome! Come see!" Gray took Natsu's hand and pulled him towards the coloring table.

"Okay!" Natsu agreed enthusiastically.

"What's your name, by the way?" Gray asked.

"It's Natsu!"

"That's my favorite season!" Gray gasped, jealous he had such a cool name. "My name's Gray!"

"That's my favorite color!" Natsu giggled.

Age: 5

"Natsu, be careful!" Gray called up to Natsu, who was swinging dangerously high on the playset.

"But Gray, look how high I'm swinging!" Natsu giggled, breathing out happy 'wheee!'s

"You'll fall off!" Gray yelled skeptically.

"No I won't! See! I'm flying! Weeee- ouch!"

- - -

Age: 5

"Can I sign your cast?" Gray asked, biting his lip.

"Okay! See, I got the red one. Isn't it cool?" Natsu stuck his broken, plaster-covered arm out for Gray to get a better look at. "It's like flames."

"Does it hurt?" Gray inspected it, leaning over. He took the black Sharpie from Natsu's good hand and uncapped the pen.

"A little bit, but daddy says I'm a big boy, so I can handle it," Natsu responded proudly.

"My daddy says I'm pa... pah... pa-tetic." Gray said monotonously, oblivious to the gravity of the word.

"What does that word mean?" Natsu inquired, confused.

"I don't know...!" Gray giggled.

Age: 5

"Its our first day of school! Are you excited?" Gray turned to face Natsu, admiring Natsu's super-cool, new plastic spaceman backpack. His backpack was a simple, tattered one his mother had found in her closet.

"I'm a little bit scared... There's going to be lots of big kids!" Natsu admitted honestly, blushing.

"Don't worry! I'll protect you!" Gray said determinedly.

"Promise?" Natsu looked at him with wide, hopeful eyes.

"Pinky promise!" Gray promised, holding out his pinky, interlocking it with Natsu's.

"Okay, let's go then! Maybe we'll make some new friends!" Natsu took Gray's hand and pulled him to a run towards the elementary school building.

- - -

Age: 5

"Natsu, who's that girl?" Gray pointed discreetly at a pretty blonde girl sliding down the slide.

"Oh, her name is Lucy! Her mummy and my mummy are friends!" Natsu answered, grinning wildly.

"Are you two friends?" Gray quipped.

"I hope so! But her best friend is a girl named Flare," Natsu replied honestly, optimistic like always.

"Who's your best friend?" Gray asked, feeling like he already knew the answer.

"You, silly!" Natsu smiled.

"You're my best friend too!" Gray giggled.

- - -

Age: 6

"I'm so excited your mummy said you could sleep over tonight!" Natsu shrieked, practically bouncing off his house's walls.

"Yeah! This is gonna be so much fun!" Gray agreed, just as excited as the pinkette.

"What are we gonna do?" Natsu asked seriously, searching around the room for any stray toys.

"Let's watch Veggie Tales!" Gray suggested enthusiastically, jumping up and down.

"That's my favorite show!" Natsu gasped.

"Me too!" Gray grinned.

"Yay, Veggie Tales!" The two said simultaneously, making a running start for the living room television set.

- - -

Age: 6

"Hey, Natsu?" Gray asked, staring at the dark ceiling. It was way past his bedtime, but he couldn't sleep.

"Mmm- Gray? Why are you still awake?" Natsu moaned into his pillow begrudgingly.

"I'm scared," Gray whispered, close to tears.

"Of what?" Natsu sat up, suddenly alert and very concerned for his friend.

"I can't tell you. I don't want you to get hurt," Gray admitted.

"Oh... okay. Come here in my sleeping bag, then..." Natsu beckoned, scooching over to make room.

"Thanks," Gray mumbled, snuggling against his arm. Natsu's arm was in an awkward positon, so he just wrapped it around Gray's petite torso.

"You're pretty warm, hehe!" Natsu commented.

"Sorry," Gray mumbled.

"No, I like it. It's cozy!" Natsu giggled, feeling his face grow warm, but he didn't understand why.

- - -

Age: 6

"Gray! Gray! Gray! Get up, quick!" Natsu bounced around the sleeping bag before tripping over Gray's feet and collapsing on his bedroom carpet.

"Ahhh! What is it?!" Gray shot up in bed, sounding scared.

"My mummy made pancakes!" Natsu announced.

"I'll race you to the kitchen!" Gray challenged as the two bolted down the hall and down the stairs.

- - -

Age: 7

"Tag, you're it!" Gray poked Natsu in the side before running in the opposite direction.

"Come back here!" Natsu cried, taking off in a run after him.

"You can't catch me!" Gray taunted, sticking his tongue out and blowing a teasing raspberry.

"Yes I can!" Natsu fired back proudly.

"No, you ca-" Gray was cut off when he felt a heavy weight fall on top of them, causing him to tumble to the grass. Natsu let out a breathy laugh from on top of him.

"Tag!" Natsu said softly, jumping off him and running away.

- - -

Age: 7

"Natsu, what are those people doing?" Gray pointed to the television set, where two cheesy cartoon characters were getting married.

"They're getting married," Natsu said it with confusion. "Mummies and daddies get married. My mummy says that I should marry someone I like a lot."

"Who are you going to get married to, then?" Gray asked, looking to face the pinkette.

"Can we get married?" Natsu asked hopefully with glistening eyes. Gray nodded immediately, all for the idea. He liked Natsu a lot, so it was only right for them to get married, right?

"Okay!" Gray agreed.

"Promise?" Natsu held out his pinkie finger expectantly.

"Pinky promise," They said in sync.

- - -

Age: 7

"So, we need a ring," Natsu said thoughtfully, tapping his chin. "And then we have to say some words."

"Oh, I have a Ring Pop!" Gray said, digging into his backpack and pulling out a crushed cellophane package. He opened it, revealing a watermelon Ring Pop with a red bottom. "Hold out your hand," Gray commanded.

Natsu complied, and Gray slipped the candy on. "Perfect fit," Natsu giggled, wiggling his fingers. "Now, we have to say the words!"

"Okay..." Gray paused to think. "Um... I, Gray Fullbuster, promise to be with you forever!" He rushed out, feeling his ears grow warm. There it was again- that weird burning feeling.

"Forever?" Natsu repeated, blinking.

"Yes," Gray confirmed firmly with a curt nod of his head.

"Okay, forever," Natsu grinned, showing off his two missing front teeth.

- - -

Age: 7

"Natsu..." Gray said with blurry eyes as the two were playing with cars in Natsu's playroom. "My daddy says we can't get married."

"What? Why not?!" Natsu looked taken-aback.

"Because it's not right for two boys or two girls to be married," Gray looked down scornfully at the paint job of his #35 race car.

"My two mommies are married! They love each other a lot!" Natsu stretched his arms out as wide as he could. "They love each other this much."

"But..." Gray was cut off by Natsu's words.

"It's not wrong," He repeated.

Gray nodded, not so sure. "Okay," He finally agreed, not knowing if he was being totally honest or not.

- - -

Age: 8

"Gray, what happened to your eye? Why is it all purple and red?"

"Oh... I fell down the stairs."

- - -

Age: 9

"Agent Frost, come in! We have a code blue, code blue!" Natsu said into the walkie-talkie.

"Agent Frost to Agent Flame, over. What's the emergency?" Gray asked, currently ducked behind the couch.

"Mummy's come home with cookies."

"Agent Flame, I think it's time we left the home base to go out and get those cookies," Gray explained level-headedly.

"Agent Frost, that sounds like an excellent idea."

- - -

Age: 9

"Hey, Gray, guess what?"

"Gray!"

"Gra-a-yy!"

"Gray, I'm dying! Heeeelp!"

"Natsu, what? What could possibly be so important?" Gray looked up from his math problems. The two were currently immersed in the wonderful world of 4th grade division and Gray didn't want to fall behind.

Natsu leaned over and poked his cheek. "Hi."

- - -

Age: 10

"Hello?" Gray answered the phone.

"Gray? It's Natsu! Can I come over and do homework with you?" Natsu asked hopefully.

Gray's eyes flickered to the broken beer bottle glass shards and the disheveled furniture around him. "I can't, not today."

"Come on! We always do our homework together! I need you to help me with reading!" Natsu whined in a pathetic voice.

Pathetic. Gray shuddered at the mere thought of the word.

"I'm sorry, can we do it some other time?" Gray offered, trying to sound upbeat.

"Yeah, okay. I love you!" Natsu answered, voice staticky over the line.

Gray glanced briefly at his father passed out on the couch. "...I love you too," He mumbled into the phone, trying to be as quiet as possible and not wake up the living nightmare.

- - -

Age: 10

"Gray, what's up with you?"

"I don't know," Gray answered, twirling the peas around on his plastic fork. "Just a bit tired, I guess."

"Have you not been getting enough sleep?" Natsu asked worriedly.

Gray avoided his gaze. "Kinda," He answered vaguely, not catching the worried stare filled with longing.

"I love you!"

"I love you too."

- - -

Age: 10

Natsu found Gray sitting next to a large tree stump, knees pulled into his chest and crying. "Gray! What's wrong?" Natsu gasped worriedly, staring into Gray's glassy set of eyes.

Gray sniffed. "My mommy left my daddy this morning. She told me she loves me and then she left with her big suitcase, some money, and her car. I'm scared, Natsu."

"Do you think she's coming back?" Natsu questioned, rubbing circles into Gray's palm to soothe him.

"I don't know," His voice broke. "I don't want to live with my daddy anymore."

"Come live with me and Mama and Mommy then!" Natsu chirped, jumping on the alternate oppurtunity eventually.

"No!" Gray yelled in surprise. Natsu recoiled back, scared and startled. "No, I can't," Gray repeated, softer this time.

"Why not?" Natsu wondered aloud.

Gray didn't respond. He simply put his head back down and gulped back more tears. Natsu didn't know what to do, so he stood there, picking at the daisies and dandelions absentmindedly. He tied them together in a long strand, connecting them when it was long enough.

"Here!" Natsu giggled, showing off his flower crown. Gray raised his head slowly, eyes redder and puffier than before. A mysteriously fresh black eye, probably a few days old, was still prominent under the swelling.

"What's this?"

"It's a flower crown, silly!" Natsu answered, putting it on his head. Perfect fit. "It's cute."

Gray gave him a watery, thankful smile. "Thanks."

"I hope you feel better soon," Natsu pouted, leaning his head on Gray's shoulder. He yawned, obviously tired. Soon enough, he had drifted off to sleep, and Gray remained there, next to his best friend, feeling the flowers and vines in his hair and allowing more tears to fall freely.

- - -

Age: 10

"You're home late!" A booming voice yelled at Gray the moment he stepped through the doorway. Gray could smell the alcohol on him. "And what the hell is that on your head?"

"It's only six-thirty-four," Gray whispered towards his father, ducking his head. He felt his body being slammed against the wall. He winced at the sharp pain shooting through his skull.

"Up to your room, right now," He commanded, ripping the crown out of his hair, taking some of his hair with it. With one last stinging, powerful slap to Gray's cheek, he pointed to the stairs. "No dinner tonight, either."

Gray fought back tears. He didn't want his dad to see him cry. However, when he locked the door and crawled under his sheets, he let the silent tears fall.

- - -

Age: 11

"Natsu?" Gray nudged Natsu, who was reading a book. They were both on the field after school. The middle school students were just beginning to file out of the building, as the elementary school students had been out for half an hour.

"Yeah?" Natsu doggy-eared the page and shut it softly, turning his full attention to Gray.

"Can I tell you something?" Gray asked.

"Anything."

"I'm moving tommorrow," Gray whispered, voice only barely audible.

Natsu dropped the book in surprise. It clanked down to his lap. "What? Why? Tommorrow? You can't?!"

"Daddy doesn't have enough money to pay the rent," Gray explained drearily. "So we're moving to an apartment far away."

"Please don't go," Natsu began to sob, clutching onto Gray's shirt.

"I don't want to," Gray whispered into his ear. "I want to stay with you."

- - -

Age: 11

"I'm going to miss you so much," Natsu held back tears as he and Gray stood face to face on the sidewalk. From ten feet away, a moving truck was loading up the last pieces of furniture. Gray watched as his bed was stored in the large compartment.

"This isn't goodbye," Gray promised him, holding up his pinky with a sad smile.

"You'll come back for me?" Natsu looked apalled. A blush creeped against his neck as he thought about it a moment longer.

Gray nodded affirmitively.

"Gray! Let's go!" His dad swerved the car out of the lane. Gray lingered a moment longer, and he knew it was now or never.

He placed a soft kiss on Natsu's temple, whispering so his dad wouldn't hear him. "I promise I will," He breathed, before releasing their pinky fingers and getting into the car, never looking back.

Natsu pressed his hand to his temple tenderly, cheeks flushing as he watched the car get smaller and smaller until it turned around the corner. He whispered a 'See you soon, Gray,' before sniffling and going back inside his house.
