The characters introduced so far are charming, with diverse and likable personalities. Character development is especially well done for Mr. Ashton, who begins as a rather condescending professor of Mia's and continues by revealing a more charitable side of him as the story progresses. I cannot quite say the same for Alex as of yet, but perhaps as I continue reading, my opinion will change.
The blurb and cover are very well done, with the intentions of the two love interests in question made clear in the former. Grammatical mistakes existed here and there throughout the actual story, but were not so prevalent that they detracted from the reading experience.
In regards to the writing style, there are a few things I want to note. For one, the writer employs curse words, censored via asterisk, often times. I think it would be wise to simply use different words entirely, rather than employ such vocabulary without going the full mile (or kilometer, depending on where you're from). Also, the dialogues overall and the thoughts of Mia Thompson did not seem natural at times. One such example is in chapter 1, when Mia arrives at her first class.
"I am in front of the classroom door. I should have taken a few steps, but I am just afraid that I will be laughed at."
This may seem pedantic, but the lack of conjunctions here make the dialogue seem slightly robotic, especially when read out loud. While this isn't consistently an issue, I've noticed it a few times throughout.
The character-driven nature of the story is excellent for character development, as stated earlier, but a little more emphasis on the setting could go a long way. Let's take the piano recital scene for example. The actual piano playing was described using two words in between parenthesis. A few paragraphs describing the scene would've given the chapter a much deeper impact, in my opinion.
I hope this review was helpful! I enjoyed the story and may continue reading it on my own time. For now, stay safe in this uncertain time in which we find ourselves. Comment down below or send me (mchuang) a direct message if you have any questions or concerns.
