Peter and the Wolf

"Here comes the wolf! Here comes the wolf!" Peter cried out loud as he ran down the hill from the woods.

The villagers hurried to herd the lambs into the corrals. Women and children scampered to hid in their cottages, afraid of the big wolf. To this, Peter rolled on the floor, cracking to watch the frantic neighbors who'd been hoaxed once again by him. Angry, after realizing it had been one of the urchin's pranks, one of the villagers scolded the boy. "This is the third time you'd played this joke to stir up people in town just for fun. Aren't you ashamed of yourself? One of these days you'll see, Peter Petticoat, you'll get in real trouble and no one will believe you. No one will help you."

A few days later, Peter boy herded his lambs near the creek. The boy jerked to the sound of breaking dry twigs. As he veered to his left, his heart dropped to his feet to see a big gray wolf coming out the bushes nearby.

There was nothing he could do to stop the rabid animal from plunging over the sheep. He could only watch the beast slaughtering the lambs. Petter ran off the woods to the village screaming, "Here comes the wolf! Here comes the wolf!"

Desperately, the boy knocked on doors to alert the people, but no one came out. No one believed him this time. On top of the hill, the beast observed with glowing eyes the village, snarling, mouth curling up, fresh blood dripping down its sharp canines.

"Did he eat the villagers, grandpa?" the little boy asked, sitting up on his bed while the old man closed the book he was reading.

"Perhaps... the story ends there. The moral here, is that no matter how many times you've been told of danger, always be prepared. Sometimes life warns us in different ways and we think it's a false alarm and one after the other we stop believing, or taking precautions. Yes, Peter was naughty. He lied several times. But the wolf was always there."

The light bulb on the roof blinked off and on for a few seconds.

"I'm scared." Tommy tucked himself up in bed.

"Don't be. I'll be here with you." Grandpa stroke the boys hair.

Outside, thunders and lightnings announced the approaching storm. The big gray wolf roared and howled menacing with its tempestuous winds and torrential rain clashing against the hills nearby.

***When Hurricane Irma threatened to hit my island, Puerto Rico, I recalled this story. It's been 20 years since the last time a hurricane like this had hit my country. We've been lucky enough to skip the path of hundreds of storms, the way we've done today. A monster tempest holding winds up to 210 mph just skirted the north of Puerto Rico after devastating neighbor islands in the Caribbean such as Antigua and Barbuda, St. Martin, St. Bart, Guadeloupe, and our municipality island of Culebra.
We thought the gray wolf would never arrive, perhaps some may think we're blessed, so blessed by God that this is why we always go unharmed. This story reminds me that everyone is vulnerable and that always we must have a plan, to be prepared for a natural phenomena or any kind of adversity.
A big gray wolf devastated Texas. A big gray wolf named Irma has vanished away the Leeward Islands and heads directly towards Florida while another beast named Jose follows its path.
Climate change is real. We've been warned. These are examples of perfect storms that feed on the abnormal high temperatures in the oceans, weather manipulation and pollution. We must be prepared. We must be conscious of how we are responsible for these events. We must do our parts.
