Father's Day
As the third Sunday in June came along, two members of the Gorillaz were having some... issues.
The first was the youngest, newest member of the group, as well as the only female one. She went by Noodle. And she was currently staring up at the calendar on her wall with a perplexed look on her face. The third Sunday in June was marked with a name. The name of a date.
"Father's Day".
She had no memory of a father. She had no memory of anything, really. So what was she supposed to do? She liked the holidays... was this just one she couldn't celebrate? Well, she would have /none/ of that.
The question of a father still floated in her mind... she had to have one, everyone did, it seemed. So, how did she not have one? What happened to him? She wanted to go find out, so she went to the person who'd probably know: Murdoc.
Murdoc didn't know much in way of... manners, or similar formalities. But he did know a lot about people, and about the band. She'd always kind of looked up to him... maybe he would know.
She went and knocked on the door of his Winnebago, standing on her tiptoes to try to peek in the window. "Murdoc?" She always pronounced his name Mu-doc.
"Just a moment!" She heard some frantic movement inside and slumped down against the outside wall of the vehicle. This could take a while. However, the door soon opened, and Murdoc stood in an inside-out shirt and awkwardly baggy pants. Good enough. "What is it, Noodle?" He smiled as sweetly as he could muster.
"What happened to my dad?"
His expression suddenly changed. "... what?"
"My dad. Father. What happened?"
"What do you mean?" He mumbled "I don't think you have a dad..."
"I can't not have one, right? Everyone has one, and a mom, right?"
"Yeah, sure, sure."
"And Father's Day is coming up--"
"Don't remind me."
"And I'll be the only person in the whole world not doing holiday things!"
"... well, I don't know what to tell you." He started to shut the door, but Noodle stopped it with her hand.
"Wait!"
"What is it? I can't just make your dad appear out of thin air."
"Yeah, but... well, what about your dad?"
"What about him?!" He scowled.
"He's probably nice, since you're nice." Noodle was quite naive at this time. "Maybe we could celebrate with him and you could be like my brother for the day!"
"... Noodle... come inside."
Noodle walked inside, sitting on the bed. She actually hadn't seen the inside of the Winnebago often. There wasn't much to it, really, except some quickly hidden bottles and trash, and clothes on the floor. She bent down to pick up a shirt off the floor, which read "Hello Kinky". But this was 2D's...
"Don't touch that." Murdoc picked it up and put it on a shelf, then sat next to Noodle, arms crossed. "Noodle... I know you're young, and you think the world is full of good people. But it's not. And I'm not going to be celebrating Father's Day at all."
Noodle gasped. "But why not? It's a holiday!"
"My dad was one of those... not-good people. He hurt me a lot, and forced me to do things I didn't want to do, and... I'm not going to be celebrating at all, and I'd hate to celebrate with him."
"But... I didn't mean to-"
"I know you didn't. It's fine, I'm not upset or anything." He paused "I don't know where your dad is... or your family... you just sort of showed up one day. But I'll give you some advice... if someone wishes you a happy Father's Day, pretend you have a good father who, I dunno, gives you piggyback rides or whatever the hell fathers do. That's what I always did."
"... hold on!" Noodle jumped off the bed, sitting up in Murdoc's chair by his desk. She grabbed some paper from the drawer and an old, chewed-up pencil and starting drawing something.
"What are you doing?"
"You'll see!"
In five minutes, she was done, hopping over to Murdoc excitedly, paper in hand. "I made it for you! I'm not good at drawing, but I like it!"
He took the paper from her hands, squinting at it. It was a scribbled, oddly proportioned picture of Murdoc, upside-down cross necklace and all. He looked like he was smiling. And next to him was Noodle, in her helmet and dress, smiling as well. Their names were written above them, and the caption read "Best Dad Ever".
"I thought that I should make you feel better. If you can't be my brother for the day, you can be my dad instead! Do you... do you like it?" She waited, rocking back and forth on her feet.
"I-I..." Murdoc blinked more than usual at that moment, then just reached up a hand to wipe away the quickly approaching tears. "I-I love it, Noodle. Thank you."
