L'auto-intitolato album di debutto venne seguito nel 2005 da Demon Days. Una tetra e irresistibile risposta alla crescente tensione e gli attuali conflitti, l'album ha dipinto una cupa immagine di un impoverito, vuoto mondo, riferendosi alla guerra in Iraq in corso. Il mondo della band venne espanso di conseguenza; dopo essersi separati, i Gorillaz si riunirono nella loro base, i Kong Studios. Dopo aver passato la sua pausa dalla band a scoprire le sue radici come super-soldato cibernetico, Noodle ha messo a disposizione le sue abilità per una buona causa ripulendo lo studio dai mostri che lo infestavano. 2D trovò lavoro al luna park del suo vecchio a Eastbourne, Russel ritornò da L.A. e Murdoc ritornò da uno sporco soggiorno in Messico.

Dopo il primo album, Gorillaz, la band si sciolse per colpa di Murdoc, che era arrivato ad un passo dall'uccidere 2D dopo una delle solite liti :( Russel e Noodle lo fermarono in tempo... ma qualcosa si era spezzato nella loro armonia, e ognuno prese strade diverse ç _ç

Ah, giusto perché lo sappiate, Murdoc veniva stuprato a turno da due schifosi messicani mentre era in prigione. Lo chiamavano "La Bicicletta". Almeno però gli hanno insegnato un po' di magia messicana :S ... almeno

Demon Days era noto per la qualità degli ospiti speciali - generando due mostruose hit nelle forme di Feel Good Inc. in collaborazione con De La Soul, e DARE, che rinvigorì il frontman degli Happy Mondays Shaun Ryder - e Plastic Beach del 2010 ha visto il potenziale delle collaborazioni sfruttato ancora di più, arruolando leggende come Mark E. Smith, Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg e Bobby Womack.

La band si ricollocò dai Kong Studios sull'isola di plastica che diede il titolo all'album. Una lurida isola rosa, formatasi dall'accumulo di rifiuti agglomerati dalle correnti oceaniche e coronata da un nascondiglio alquanto kitsch in stile Thunderbirds, Plastic Beach risultò un paradiso per la band - fino a che non fu ridotta a pezzi dai pirati, s'intende.

The self-titled debut album was followed up in 2005 by Demon Days. A gloomy and compelling response to escalating tensions and ongoing conflicts, the album painted a grim picture of a depleted, hollow world, addressing the ongoing war in Iraq. The band's world was expanded accordingly; having parted ways, Gorillaz reunited at their base, Kong Studios. After spending the hiatus uncovering her roots as a cybernetically-enhanced supersoldier, Noodle put her skills to good use clearing monsters out of the studio. 2D gave up a job at his old man's funfair in Eastbourne, Russel returned from LA and Murdoc slunk back from a sordid sojourn in Mexico.

Demon Days was notable for the quality of special guests – spawning two monster hits in the form of the De La Soul collab Feel Good Inc. and DARE, which reinvigorated Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder – and 2010's Plastic Beach saw the potential of collaboration exploited even further, enlisting legends such as Mark E. Smith, Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg and Bobby Womack.

The band itself relocated from Kong Studios to the plastic beach of the album's title. A lurid pink island, formed from accumulated waste brought together by the ocean's currents and crowned with a deeply kitsch Thunderbirds-style hideout, the Plastic Beach provided a haven for the band – until it was shot to pieces by pirates, that is.
