Stranamente, gli sviluppi tecnologici che hanno dato ai Gorillaz una voce e un'interattiva, identità virtuale sono le stesse che sono belle pronte a fotterci. Un discusso vantaggio dell'obsolescenza temuta da Murdoc, così come la mano d'opera diventi sempre più automatizzata, è il potenziale punto di partenza che offre dai confini del capitalismo. Il lavoro meccanico ci offre l'opportunità di gettare le basi su una nuova struttura globale dove agli essere umani è concesso il tempo e lo spazio per dedicarsi a cose importanti, con del significato. Il business della creatività, per esempio.

L'equilibrio, però, potrebbe benissimo oscillare dall'altra parte; attraverso la temuta obsolescenza la nostra schiava tecnologia può schiavizzare noi con facilità. Per Russel, un personaggio virtuale in una band virtuale, accessibile attraverso lo specchio nero della una finestra di uno smartphone, siamo tutti in bilico sul filo del rasoio. E, dice lui, saremo noi a decidere come cadere.

"Proprio adesso" dichiara, "abbiamo ancora il controllo, abbiamo ancora il potere. Possiamo fare una scelta. E quello è più o meno quel che di cui parla Humanz - questo momento di transizione in cui ci troviamo, muovendoci davvero in fretta verso qualche nuova versione dell'umanità. Nessuno sa come andrà a finire, ma qualsiasi cosa accadrà, starà a noi farci i conti".

Funnily enough, the technological developments that give Gorillaz a voice and interactive, individual identities are the same that stand to fuck us all right up. A mooted advantage of the obsolescence Murdoc fears, as the workforce becomes more automated, is the potential point of departure it offers from the confines of capitalism. Machine labour offers us an opportunity to pivot into a new global structure where humans are afforded the time and space to get on with important, meaningful stuff. The business of creativity, for example.

The balance, though, could just as well tip the other way; through the feared obsolescence our slave technology could as well enslave us. For Russel, a virtual character in a virtual band, accessible through the black mirror of a smart-phone window, we are balanced on a knife-edge. And, he says, we'll be the ones to decide how we fall.

"Right now," he declares, "we still have control, still got the power. We can make a choice. And that's kind of what Humanz is about – this moment of transition we're in, moving real fast towards some new version of humanity. No one knows how it'll play out, but whatever happens, it's all on us."
