"Il mio rapporto con Murdoc in questi giorni è abbastanza sano" farfuglia 2D. Cantante e un po' sciocco, la sua vita pre-Gorillaz l'aveva visto al sicuro come impiegato in un negozio. Fu "shanghai-ato" nella band dal bassista e incontrollabile demogorgone Murdoc Niccals; con commozione celebrale, rapito e forzato a cantare. Ma quello era il passato - da allora le tensioni si sono dissipate, con qualche assistenza liquida, spiega 2D. "Da quando Murdoc ha cominciato a bere di più ha avuto meno tempo per picchiarmi e torturarmi".

"Shangaiare" è un vero e proprio termine tecnico, che consiste nel rapimento e il forzato servizio nella marina (molto d'uso in Gran Bretagna). Di solito si utilizzava anche l'inganno per portare uomini sulle navi, un po' come fa jack Sparrow su Tortuga XD Il Demogorgone è un essere mitologico descritto da Platone come il padre di tutti gli dei avente però caretteristiche simili a quelle del principe delle tenebre; na brutta bestia, mi dicono lol Per "assistenza liquida" credo si intendano pagamenti... mi immagino 2D stendere una mano piena di soldi a Murdoc e gridare "TI PAGO SE NON MI PICCHI!" e il cetriolo - mica scemo - accetta l'affare XD

I Gorillaz hanno fatto la loro prima apparizione quasi 20 anni fa, atterrando in un mondo ottimistico post-anni duemila. Con Murdoc come forza motrice, Russel su batteria e percussione ad incanalare a intermittenza gli spiriti dei suoi amici rappers defunti con effetti lirici devastanti, e 2D a cantare con quella sua aria vacante, alla ciurma si unì la alquanto enigmatica ragazzina e chitarrista giapponese Noodle, giunta dal Giappone in una cassa in risposta a un annuncio piazzato sull'NME.

Quando fu rilasciato nel 2001, l'album di debutto dei Gorillaz auto-intitolato offriva una fresca occhiata a quel che la band avrebbe potuto essere. L'intera opera scattò fuori dalle menti di una coppia di icone degli anni novanta: Damon Albarn e Jamie Hewlett. Hewlett, responsabile dell'estetica del gruppo, si è reso famoso grazie al suo romanzo grafico di culto Tank Girl. Albarn, intanto, ha speso decenni facendo il cantante nei Blur. Stilisticamente, i Gorillaz potrebbero non aver rappresentato per Hewlett un così grande salto, ma per Albarn la storia aveva aperto un nuovo orizzonte sull'opportunità musicale: la possibilità di spostarsi dal Britpop e le sue limitazioni sonore per esplorare una nuova ed avventurosa gamma di suoni.

"My relationship with Murdoc these days is pretty healthy," 2D mumbles. Lead singer and half-wit, his life pre-Gorillaz saw him safely employed in a shop. He was shanghai'd into the band by bassist and lurching demogorgon Murdoc Niccals; concussed, abducted and forced to sing. But that was back in the day – since then tensions have dissipated, with some liquid assistance, 2D explains. "Since Murdoc's started drinking more he's had less time to beat me up and torture me."

Gorillaz made their first appearance almost 20 years ago, landing in a world of post-Y2K optimism. With Murdoc as a driving force, Russel on drums and percussion, intermittently channeling the spirits of his deceased rapper buddies to devastating lyrical effect, and 2D singing and looking vacant, the crew was joined by the somewhat enigmatic Japanese schoolgirl and guitarist Noodle, who arrived from Japan in a crate in response to an ad placed in the NME.

When it dropped in 2001, Gorillaz' self-titled debut album offered a fresh look at what a band could even be. The fiction itself sprung from the minds of a pair of nineties icons: Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. Hewlett, responsible for the visual aesthetic of the group, made his name with cult graphic novel character Tank Girl. Albarn, meanwhile, spent the decade fronting Blur. Stylistically, Gorillaz may not have represented such a leap for Hewlett, but for Albarn the narrative opened up a new vista of musical opportunity: the chance to move away from Britpop and its sonic limitations to explore an adventurous new palette of sounds.
