Chapter 15
It was around eight when 2D finally saw Murdoc's black car park in front of Russel's apartment. He'd been waiting at the window the whole time. He had the entire crew help him get ready; he was now in a white dress shirt and loose-fitting jeans, and had his hair slicked back (despite his protests). He ran over to the door and flung it open, shouting farewells to his friends.
At the bottom of the steps stood Murdoc, who Stuart saw had also made an attempt to dress up. Murdoc had said he would surprise him... hopefully they weren't going anywhere too expensive or fancy. Neither of them had the money.
"Hi."
"Hey."
They stood awkwardly for a second until Stuart came down the stairs. "Um, thanks for this, Murdoc."
"No problem. Now, c'mon, I have so much to show you!" Murdoc grabbed his hand and ran out the door. Stuart laughed and followed. It was weird to see Murdoc so happy...
The sun was setting below the city as they began to drive. 2D watched out the window, his hair blowing in the wind, as the apartments fell behind, then the neighborhood, then the rest of the city. He didn't care where they were driving to, this was just so nice. He pulled his head back into the car and leaned back in the seat. "So, where are we going?"
"The best place in the city."
Stuart looked around. There didn't seem to be much out here except fields, grass, and flowers... suddenly, he heard a squeak from the complaining car and felt a jolt as Murdoc hit the brakes. "We're here."
Stuart stepped out, finding the same thing that he'd seen for about a mile or so- grassy fields with an uninterrupted view of the sunset. He wasn't expecting this. He felt bad about thinking it, but he figured Murdoc would just take them to some shady bar that doesn't card.
Russel was right, he supposed. Murdoc was a good person deep down.
The black-haired man hopped up onto the roof of his car. "Don't worry, nobody ever comes out here except for me." He extended a hand. "Care to join me?"
2D took his hand with a smirk and hopped up on the roof as well. He swung his feet over the side and laid back. The sky looked like it had been painted with watercolors that night. The faintest streak of blue was still visible through all the purple, orange, and pinks. Murdoc fell back as well.
"I can see now why they call it sky blue..." Murdoc had a nervous tinge to his voice, and he laughed it off, biting his lip. "I mean, uh, your hair."
"Oh, um... t-thank you, Murdoc." He looked at the sky again. "Fell out of a tree, lost my hair, and it came out blue... nobody believes me, but..." He chuckled.
"... my bangs are the same way." Murdoc laughed as well. "Everyone thinks they're fake... got them from my dad's side... got the whole face from my dad's side, really. But I like to think I'm more like my mom."
"I've never met your mom."
"Funny. Me neither."
The pinks turned to crimson, and then to black, as three hours of talking and laughing ticked by. By the end of the night, Murdoc had heard his first Human League song and 2D had drank his first beer (it didn't taste as bad as he'd anticipated). They were new to this, new to these things and to each other, but that was okay.
As they drove back towards the city, Murdoc slammed the breaks and turned to the blue-haired man. "Dents?"
"Yes?"
They found themselves both leaning in at once, and suddenly their lips were pressed together, hands overlapping and eyes flittering shut. How had this happened? They didn't care. What would happen next? They couldn't tell. This was just one night, just one thing and one time.
But sometimes new things weren't all that bad.
