Blurb:
Imani was just supposed to make sure that the lost dog got home safely, come back, and pretend like the mere thought of the owner with doe eyes and an armful of tattoos didn't make her question her entire belief system. Sounds simple enough...right? It isn't. (onc prompt #69 | when music becomes a way to communicate no words could compare)
Goose's Thoughts:
Welcome to Week 39 and a story that will have you feeling all the feels from the first to the last line.
Sol has such a masterful way with words throughout this story. They are amazing at weaving powerful sentences that capture the difficulties of the human experiences and dealing with first time crushes. Each sentences adds so much to the narrative and we really get to see the inner workings of Imani's head. There is just something special about the way this story has been written that is just simply magical.
Each character in this story adds something new and unique to the overall story and I love how different they all are. Each character has their own little quirks and subtilties in the way they act and behave that I absolutely adore. What I love, is that despite how different they all are, they make up such a fun and caring group of friends that really shine throughout the narrative. They all bring something special to the table and their dynamic really grows because of it.
Not only does this group have some of the best characters and friendships, but Sol's use of the found family troupe throughout the story really brings this group together. The advice they give to each other, and the small ways they look out for each other is amazing. Each one notices little details about the others that people might not notice and it really shows how much they care about each other. Found family is one of my favourite tropes and Sol captures it in such an amazing way.
Imani is an interesting main character and I loved seeing the inside of her head as she worked through her first crush on Kaia. Her reaction to the crush is so realistic and Sol captures the struggle of dealing with a person's feelings with remarkable ease. The anxiety and struggles just leap off the page with every paragraph and the confusion Imani feels just oozes from the screen. Sol really manages to capture this experience in just a few lines.
If you're looking for a story that is masterfully written, and with on of the best found family troupes I've seen, then this is the story for you. Sol has such a masterful way with words that capture the first crush experience in such a short read. Each paragraph adds so much to the overall story and the characters within are all unique and amazing human beings.
Thank you for writing such an amazing story, Sol!
