Chapter Five: System Updated

"I heard it's not even meant to be that bad."

"I would agree but my logic file commands me to choose otherwise."

"Don't sass me, Google."

( y/n ) sighed as she walked with her robotic companion towards the Google store that had newly opened a few streets from where she lived, aware the bot was quite reluctant to go there due to a recent 'update' he was able to get. Although he was probably more nervous about the fact new Google bots were being auctioned in the same store with alternate designs and purposes. Well he likely didn't have any ability to be nervous but either way he wasn't acting happy about it.

"I shall try. Just remember you have a choice on this, and if the update doesn't sound better then we can just go home and watch the cat and mouse show." Google stated as he walked besides her, looking around as they walked towards the store and slowed subtly to try and prevent the inevitable for as long as possible.  She looked over at him for a moment, nodding slightly in agreement before turning back to face the door as they got to it finally.

"Don't worry; I won't do anything without talking to you first or being completely sure about the decision. Okay?" ( y/n ) promised, causing Google to pause as he comprehended these factors before smiling happily and nodding in agreement. Now reassured he wouldn't try to run away, she pushed the glass door open and stepped inside with her living browser before their eyes widened in awe and they looked around in wonder. Technology was not only absolutely everywhere in here but it was walking, talking, interacting with customers to attempt to get themselves bought with the most professional of subtleness. Google trailed rather timidly behind ( y/n ), observing these people out to buy with slight fear as he kept close to his owner to keep them from looking at him too. Suddenly there was someone else standing in front of them, wearing a uniform to show he was an employee rather than just another bot.

"Hi, you must be the woman who called up for the update. ( y/n ), right?" He asked in a friendly manner, causing her to smile back and nod as Google moved to stay by her side almost protectively. It would have been slightly frightening, if not for the still concerned and confused expression on his face.

"Yeah, that's right. We don't want to get it before hearing about the details first, if that's okay." She commented sheepishly as she glanced up to Google, causing him to nod slight in agreement as the employee watched them interact. Afterwards the short-ish man shrugged his shoulders, rather relaxed about the whole ordeal.

"That's fine; we don't expect you to jump right into it. I can't right now since another guy has come in for the update but feel free to look around whilst you're waiting." He explained with a quick smile before he was off, in the back room that had an 'Appointments only' sign screwed into the door. Google almost sighed in relief as he realised they still had a few minutes at least, turning to face ( y/n ) before panicking for a moment as she walked towards the new Google designs. He hurried after her quickly, staying directly next to her as she looked at the first bot in line with curiosity.

"Hello there, my name is Aaron. My category is specialising in homecare, friendly companionship and moral support." It stated with a warm smile but his large brown eyes were emotionlessly dull, although he had light brown hair along with some stubble. 'He' had the usual Google clothes just like ( y/n )'s own Google and all the others in the room, almost like a uniform for the human-like robots. It was surprising to her that they'd given him a name, along with the 'every bot is different' promise the company had.

"Nice to meet you Aaron." She nodded to him with a smile before moving as someone else came over to look at him, curious. It was then she saw others as well, stepping over as Google trailed closely behind her with a nervous expression as people every now and then glanced to him. One of them was immediately a little taller than 'Aaron' and him, with glasses and short brown hair as well as a serious expression. He turned his head to face ( y/n ) when she stepped closer, his expression quite blank rather than a smile on his face like the other had.

"Hello, I am Google. My category is intelligence, knowledge and strategy." He stated calmly, causing her to frown slightly for a moment in confusion as she noticed his specific choice of words.

"Don't you have a name?" She asked with curiosity, causing the bot to pause for a mere second as he processed the question. Google merely watched the bot in slight fear, a little concerned as it seemed to almost freeze.

"My name . . . My name is B-Bo—I'm sorry, I fear you are mistaken. Google robots are not allocated names, unless given one after being fully purchased and posted to their new location." He seemed to glitch for a moment with a frown before he went back to his stoic expression, luckily not catching the attention of any of the other customers as an employee flicked their gaze to the strange machine. ( y/n ) didn't say anything for a moment, undoubtedly confused about the names as her own Google clenched his fists in case the glitching was dangerous. However after that the other Google did nothing, merely nodding in politeness to the two before another customer came along.

"I haven't seen that happen before." The concerned Google at her side muttered softly, following her as she moved over to the third one of this line. The woman merely nodded in return as she still said nothing, stepping towards this new bot and smiling a little timidly at him. He, like the bot supposedly called 'Aaron' and her own Google, had dark brown eyes but even shorter dark brown hair as well as stubble. He smiled goofily, a lot more carefree than the other two but still having no emotion shown from those eyes of his.

"Hi there, I'm Google. I specialise in emotional support, puns and assisting socialisation." He stated, not seeming to be like the previous two in any ways aside from his emotionless eyes. It was only creepy for ( y/n ) since she was so used to seeing emotions—probably faked, no doubt—in her Google's eyes, and the lack of that in any of these bots seemed . . . Unnatural.

"Miss ( y/n ), we're ready for the appointment." The employee from before interrupted as he hurried over to her, giving the woman a warm smile before leading the way to the appointment room and expecting her to follow. She hesitated for a moment but then followed with Google, getting to the door when the employee turned around and glanced between the two with a raised eyebrow.

"Do you want to bring your bot in for the chat, or shut its system off while we talk?" He asked nonchalantly, causing Google to flinch slightly at the bluntness of his words. ( y/n ) looked at him in concern, the guilt of making him nervous starting to build up but she couldn't just walk out. Even not calling him Google seemed slightly wrong to her, but it wasn't like the guy was incorrect about him being her bot.

"He's going to come in for the chat too; I think he deserves to hear this since it's about him." She stated, causing Google to glance at her and smile slightly as his worry appeared to shrink smaller now he'd know. Although it wasn't like he could feel worry, right?

"Okay, that's fine. There's another seat there in case you want it to sit down." The employee shrugged as he headed indoors, allowing ( y/n ) and Google to follow in after him cautiously. It was a rather small square shaped room, with a fairly dull white desk in the middle with a regular keyboard and computer that seemed a little too low-tech for the usual Google software. There was also a little pot of pens and some printed sheets they assumed were legal contracts for the bots and update ready to be signed, all prepared and ready for customers. Two chairs faced the desk and one on the other side faced the computer and the employee sat down in it, waiting expectantly as ( y/n ) and Google got into their seats as well.

"I understand you're nervous about this and it is completely normal to want to know what happens to your bot after the process, so I'll give you the basics and you can ask away after. Sound good?" The man suggested as he began typing up on the computer, grinning slightly as ( y/n ) nodded in agreement.

"Good. Well the new Google update will include fewer issues with interacting with people and other bots, meaning it'll behave in a friendly manor rather than how it is right now, considering your bot is showing signs of concern and quite unusual protectiveness towards you. It's normal for them to look after you and try to keep you as safe as they possibly can, but your one appears to be overdoing it." He began calmly, glancing over at Google as the bot became visibly insulted by what he'd said.

"Go on." ( y/n ) stated quietly, her gaze flickering from Google to the man sitting across from her as she thought through what he was telling her.

"Well, we've also figured out the coding to make them more obedient to their owner, meaning they'll do the work you want them to with no question and obey rather than backchat or such. It's 'emotions', or rather the disk that holds the program to fake them, will be more controlled, meaning your bot won't panic as much, get angry or anything like that." The employee went on with his rambling, glancing up from his screen to the possible customer and tool in front of him. ( y/n ) nodded as she listened but something plagued her mind, something that she wouldn't be able to do this without knowing.

"What's the catch?" She asked with slight worry, causing the man's smile to falter slightly before he sat up properly and sighed to run his fingers through his hair.

"The update needs to be able to fully merge with the bot and its memory core, which would cause errors if other data is previously contained in that particular section. Essentially we'd have to wipe their memory core from the moment of first being activated and start the entire system again." He admitted with some reluctance, causing the colour to drain from Google's face as he turned to face ( y/n ) with his eyes wide with fear. The woman next to him was silent at that point, her expression surprisingly serious as she thought through the possibilities. He'd be so much more obedient, more reserved, respectful and even social. It seemed like the perfect deal.

"Sorry, I'm afraid I'll have to decline. I like Google just how he is." She stated calmly, causing the robot next to her to automatically relax as the employee across from them appeared to tense slightly.

"No problem. You can leave now." His friendly nature completely disappeared after she made her choice, glaring at the two the whole time they took to get up and leave the now almost creepy little room. Google hurried after ( y/n ) as she moved a little huffily towards the door, opening the door for her and walking beside her once they were out. He was watching her in slight shock, obviously confused and causing her to raise an eyebrow as she turned to look back at him.

"What, did you expect me to say yes? I like you how you are. You don't need an update if it's just going to make you like the others." She replied to the bot's look, causing him to pause for a moment before smiling softly and nodding.

"Thank y—" He almost finished his sentence when the two heard something loud clang nearby, sharing a look with each other quickly before heading into the alleyway it came from. Google walked a little ahead to make sure it was safe, frowning as he saw what appeared to be a large metallic disposal unit. ( y/n ) was about to move away when the metal lid on it shook, the clang ringing out a little louder as the two of them got closer. Google glanced over at her nervously, nodding to the bin lid slightly and stepping closer as she nodded nervously in return to let him open it. The robot moved closer slowly, placing his hands on the lid and casting a look over at her to check one more time before he opened it.

"Spare parts . . ." He muttered quietly as he looked into it, the parts obviously from the Google store they had just been to. The frown on his face was obvious as he saw nothing but spare parts right to the brim, not finding anything strange.

"Really? I expected some sort of raccoon." ( y/n ) mumbled slightly in disappointment, stepping over and placing her hands on the edge. A smile appeared on her face as she felt him hold her hand, at least for a second before she remembered and slowly turned to face Google as he held up the lid for her with both of his hands.

"Google . . ." She mumbled fearfully as her gaze very hesitantly moved to her hands on the edge of the container, where a pale hand was holding onto hers tightly from inside the container. As soon as she said the word she was suddenly leapt on and had her back slammed onto the ground, her eyes widening in shock as the air left her lungs and she stared dizzily at the humanoid creature that had its hands latched onto her shoulders. Its face was covered in oil, dirt and scratches, one of its eyes glowing green with a blue iris that stared straight back at her.

"H-H-Hello m-my name is G-Google let me h-help y--" It glitched but suddenly slumped down onto ( y/n ) and didn't move, causing her to tremble slightly in fear as she looked to the creatures face on her shoulder to Google holding a now-broken slab of metal and staring at her in a panic.

What the Hell . . . ?
