two little salt packs
I'm not sure what exactly I'm supposed to be looking for. Nothing seems out of the ordinary. The only odd news stories I see are the ones that deal with the students from my school, which Sam and Dean already know about. I have checked just about everything, so I text Dean off of the number he gave me.
Me: Hey Dean, it's Eddie. I haven't found anything.
He responds in a few seconds.
Dean: Did you check the sports?
I roll my eyes.
Me: Yes, I did, after I checked everything else, but only to see how the UW basketball team is doing.
Dean: How are they doing?
Me: Good, like always, so not out of the ordinary.
Dean: What about the weather?
Me: WTF will the weather have to do with it
Dean: A lot, actually. Check it.
Oh my goodness, this is stupid. I could probably be doing something more productive right now to help them, but no. Dean has me checking the weather. I go to the weather channel and look up local weather, and click on the radar. "Oh wow, look, it's going to rain." I roll my eyes, then notice a weather warning flash against the screen. "Severe thunderstorm warning in your area. Take cover and stay tuned for updates. Hail and tornadoes may develop."
I pull out my phone to text Dean again.
Me: Weather channel says severe t-storm warning. Hail and tornadoes possible.
I'm not sure how all of this bad weather is coming, because Dean and I were just outside, and the skies were clear as day. I spin around in the chair, and notice black clouds on the western horizon. "Oh boy. I guess that could be peculiar."
Dean: Damn. That's what we're looking for. Is there salt packets anywhere in the room?
"Salt packets? What the hell ..." I wonder what salt could possibly do as I stand to look for them. I find two small salt packets in with some other things like creamer and sugar for the coffee machine.
Me: 2 small packs. Why?
Dean: Dump them out in a line in front of the door
Me: Why?
Dean: Dammit just do it Eddie
Me: Ok fine
I roll my eyes as I stand up, dumping the packs in a straight line in front of the door. I then sit back down on one of the beds and turn on the TV, watching the severely confused meteorologist try and explain the very random and quick formation of this large storm system. It starts thundering outside, and I see flashes of lightning through the window as the sky darkens. Soon, I hear the splashes of large raindrops hit the window, and look at the salt line in front of the door.
"In what strange universe do two little salt packs protect me against a thunderstorm?" I mutter, keeping my phone next to me in case there is anything more from Dean.
The door suddenly bursts open, and I see Dean run in, drenched in the rain. He kicks his wet shoes off and dodges the line of salt, then pulls two large containers of salt out of his backpack and throws one to me.
"Start lining the windowsills and walls." He says, then proceeds to do exactly that.
I frown as I also do that. "Dean, what the Hell does this have to do with anything?"
"Salt?" Dean pauses a moment only to look at me. "A lot, actually, that I don't care to explain to you." He says, then continues pouring salt.
"Okay, fine." I mutter, then keep pouring salt until he says to stop because there is enough. "Dean, what is going on here? First you said there was something up with my dead co-worker, now you think a demon took your brother?"
"Well, this town is whacked, and I'd recommend you move out of it as soon as Sam, Cas, and I finish our business here." He shakes his head. "It's got more stuff going on than I've seen in one place in a long time." He sighs and runs a hand over his face. "And the fact that that bitch Ruby has Sam? That means nothing good, because ..." Dean groans and sits down on the bed. "Because he fell for her tricks once already."
"What do you mean?" I ask, sitting down next to Dean.
"Sam and Ruby ... well, you know ... got it on, once or twice or ... well, multiple times." Dean sighs. "That lead to a very, very bad time." He shakes his head.
I frown. I can tell Dean is very worried about his brother, and for as much of a jackass as Dean is, he does truly care a lot about his brother.
"Dean?"
"Hmmm?" Dean looks over at me, his hands clenched in fists.
"We'll find your brother." I say softly.
Dean glances over at me and sighs. "It's not that easy, Eddie. Trust me." He gets up and rolls his eyes.
"Dean, I'm trying to be nice to you, here, and you are just being a jerk!" I frown, crossing my arms.
"Sorry, Eddie, I'm a little stressed out here! My brother is missing, taken by some crazy demon chick, and also, there is some weird crap going on at your school, with your students, and we can't seem to figure it out!" Dean's voice raises loud and then he sees the look on my face. "Sorry." He mutters, then takes a seat again next to me. "Dammit Cas, where are you?" He yells. "Said he'd meet me back here by now."
Castiel appears, looking unimpressed by Dean's summoning of him again. "What now, Dean?"
"You said you'd meet me back here, by this time." Dean points to the clock on the wall.
Cas's eyes flick to the wall and then back to Dean. "I have no important news to report. I was off looking for Ruby and your brother. I think I may be able to track her." He gives Dean a look. "If you would stop requesting my presence here."
Dean rolls his eyes. "Well what's going on with this demon storm, Cas?" He points out the window to the howling wind and rain.
Cas looks out the window. "It's because of Ruby's presence. Also, she is summoning her minions. The source of the power of the storm comes from somewhere farther away. You're not in danger at the moment. She's got something sinister planned for someone else, not you."
"Yeah, someone else like who, Cas? My brother?" Dean asks.
"I don't know." Cas shrugs. "Probably. Now I must go, Dean. Stay put and don't do anything. I think it's best to just let me handle finding Sam's whereabouts." The angel says, then quickly leaves.
Dean begins to swear and stands up, kicking the bed. He walks over to the fridge and pulls out a beer, taking the cap off and throwing it in the trash. "It's like I'm trapped in a freaking box. Everywhere I turn, there's a roadblock, and I just can't keep following a lead, because it stops, or there's something stopping me from reaching it, or ..." He pauses to take a swig from his beer. "There's two different things going on, and both of them seem unattainable at the moment. I mean, I know how to fix what's going on at your school, but I have to save Sam first, so ..." He sighs and looks over at me. "There's never time in between cases to just stop and relax. To breathe."
"Well, right now, why don't you relax? You heard Castiel, it's best just to leave finding Sam's location to him. You could take this time to relax." I suggest.
"Relax?" Dean raises an eyebrow at me. "I can't just relax." He says.
"Sure you can." I get up and go to the fridge, grabbing one of Dean's beers, then sit down on the bed, getting comfortable in the pillows. I then flip on the TV, seeing an old action movie is on. "Relax like this."
Dean sighs and sits next to me, holding his beer bottle in his hand. "Relax. Okay." He frowns, and I know that he will not actually relax.
"Dean, come on." I frown and elbow him. "Stop worrying about Sam."
I see a look of guilt flash his face. "We should have taken him with us when I brought you to your house." He shakes his head and sighs.
"You said Sam's gotten himself in a situation like this before, right?" I ask.
"Yes, he has."
"Okay, then you need to calm down." I go to the fridge and bring him another beer. "Here, drink this, and just ... relax."
"Okay, relax." Dean nods and take the beer with a sigh. He stays silent as the two of us watch the movie together, and eventually, I feel my eyes droop and I fall asleep.
