The spark.
Officer Parkins' P.O.V
We were all tense. No-one had been in a situation like this before. Hell! I wasn't sure if a situation like this had happened before! There was a man in there torturing a young boy, who sounded like he'd been through it all before, just for the fun of it! Calling it art!
It made me sick.
So we were all incredibly tense. Just waiting for something to happen. Something which meant we could help them instead of just sitting here waiting for him to finish. So it was understandable that everyone one of us jumped when the phone buzzed. We'd hooked it up to every emergency call in the area just in case, it was a fools hope, but it was worth a shot. I went to get it, probably just another person with a minor injury they were overreacting about or some drunk teenagers thinking it'd be funny, well I was not in the mood.
So you couldn't imagine how surprised I was when I heard a teenage girl on the other end.
"Is-is this a police officer, the one who called?" She whispered, so quietly I could barely heard her. I waved my arm, signalling for quiet and instantly every officer present was silent.
"Yes, Officer Parkins, ma'am. What's wrong? Are you-are you in there?" She took a shaky breath, I could hear it rattling on the other side of the phone.
"Yes. And-and I want to help."She went silent for a moment and I hoped to any God that was listening that they didn't know she was doing this. I didn't want to think about what would happen if they caught her. "The main doors, the big, metal double door on the side of the gym; they're unguarded and unlocked and, including-including th-the t-t-torturer, there are only four men."
I inhaled, scribbling these details down as quickly as possible.
"How armed are they ma'am?"
"Ummm..." Another shaky breath. The brave girl. "The three who are just guarding have what I think are rifles and knives, but the-the leader, he has everything. Whips, guns, knives, torched, br-branding irons...everything." The last part was whispered, you could hear the shiver of fear freezing each word.
"Thank you ma'am that's incredibly helpful. Just one more question before you put this phone away and lay low, OK?"
"Ye-yeah."
I sighed, she shouldn't have to put her neck on the line like this, but she was all we had.
"What condition is the boy in?" I was scared of the answer, so scared I barely wanted to ask. The entire police force seemed to hold their breath, waiting for that dreaded response.
"Percy? He's bad, sir. Really, really bad. There's so much blood and burns and-" She went silent as we heard a blood-curdling scream from the gym, she whimpered, "Oh God. Sir, it's bad!" She was crying, getting hysterical.
"Don't draw attention to yourself, keep quiet!" I had to warn her, she had to be quiet or they'd hurt her.
"S-s-sorry, but th-" She was cut off.
Silence on the other end.
"Hello." A voice; savage, unrestrained insanity and violence running rampant through it, barely restrained by the syllables. "I'm afraid the little girlie here is unavailable for further interviewing, she's going to be....indisposed....for a little while." And the line went dead....
"NO!" I couldn't believe this was happening! "Everyone fall out!" I shouted orders at my officers. "Go by the large doors! Have snipers ready through the windows. No one else is getting hurt today! Go!"
My heart stopped as we heard another scream pierce the air.
This time it was a girls.
