Chapter 1: The Lofi Girl

(This is my bookly reminder for you all to comment! It's pretty much all I get out of actually pressing the publish button)

The Lofi Girl. That's what all of Jade's classmates called her. This joke had started when one of the more wild of them had accidentally knocked her headphones off her head while she was having lunch in the university courtyard and then heard the music she had been listening to.

The unwanted nickname had annoyed Jade at first but soon enough she had come to actually like it, there was no better name to describe her. She loved Lofi music, now everyone knew that.

Of course after that there had been a few others who had been given similar nicknames, such being the case with the Synthwave Boy, she supposed originality had to end somewhere. What even was Synthwave? Jade had no clue but she wasn't about to turn off her Lofi to listen to it.

The Lofi Girl was also known to be constantly studying, as Jade had recently found out. This rumor actually upset her. Sure she did study a lot but they were in university, was she supposed to not do that?

Jade did other things aside from studying, she just didn't make a big deal of it like the other students. They went to parties and drank, she would listen to lofi jazz at her favorite coffee shop and draw. They slept in because they were hungover, she woke up nice and early to make herself her morning coffee and listen to lofi hiphop before going for a walk down some of the many roads of this french city. Sundays she let herself sleep in, everyone loves a lazy Sunday.

Jade just liked to Chill with her cat, it didn't mean something was wrong with her. That being said her lifestyle did leave her a bit lonely. Once in a while there were some days when she'd just stand outside in the rain, her elbows on the railing of her balcony and her hands supporting her head, as she listened to the saddest lofi she could find, wishing she was more sociable. But everyone had their bad days.

Jade's headphones almost never came off. She wore them to study, she wore them to bed, she wore them to the cafe, she wore them to class, she even wore them in the bath since they were waterproof. If she was in class, or when she rarely talked to someone, she just lowered the volume so as to hear the person speaking. Nobody got offended, this was the Lofi Girl after all.

Currently Jade was sat in the aforementioned coffee shop, listening to her music as she drew a picture of her cat who was sat on the ground beside her chair.

She carefully moved the tip of her pencil along the paper, the picture finally starting to take shape. "You're going to make a very handsome drawing, Toast" she spoke in that beautiful French accent of hers.

Toast meowed quietly without opening his eyes or looking up. This place was like a second home to him and he loved it.

After another couple minutes her head perked up as she felt someone walking up to her. "Bon appétit!" she smiled at the barista as he placed her coffee and croissant on the table beside her sketchbook. He also leaned down and placed a small bowl of water in front of Toast.

"Merci beaucoup" Jade nodded as she smiled at the man. She had been coming to this place since she was a kid and this man had always been here, she couldn't imagine being happy working here for twenty years but she supposed that's why he worked here and she didn't.

"De rien" he nodded before walking back to where he made the drinks and food, out of Jade's view as she looked out the window with a wistful look.

Jade was fluent in both French and English. She primarily used English though because that's how her mother had been raised and in turn that was how she had chosen to raise her daughter.

Jade smiled as she bit into the croissant that she had just lifted off her plate. "Delicious" she smiled as she continued to stare off into the street. She lifted her coffee and sipped that between bites of the croissant.

Her attention was quickly caught by a boy crossing the street. It wasn't so much the boy himself who interested her as much as the books he was carrying.

The boy entered the coffee shop before quickly ordering and walking to the table beside Jade. She watched out of the corner of her eye as she sipped her coffee again as he sat down and placed his textbooks and notebooks on the table.

He glanced at Jade and she quickly looked away so as not to be caught. He then went back to opening his books and beginning to study for whatever it was that he needed to study for.

Soon enough Jade had finished her coffee and her croissant so she went back to drawing. From time to time she'd glance at the boy again. He didn't seem to be at all into the studying he was doing, in fact he had that same facial expression that Jade usually had when she studied. He was more than happy to take a break when his chocolate croissant and hot chocolate arrived.

Jade stopped staring after another minute, she was starting to feel like a stalker. She looked down to toast who had fallen asleep before picking up her pencil and going back to drawing the adorable little fluff ball.

She relaxed, listening to the relaxing beats that came out of her headphones, as the time seemed to just slip by. Soon enough the sun was down and her drawing was complete so she placed her pencil down. She smiled as she looked at it, happy with the likeness to her cat.

She glanced down at the cat again and reached down to run her hand though his fur. "Come Toast" she spoke quietly so as not to interrupt the boy sitting at the next table.

The cat meowed as it woke up, stretching itself out as Jade stood up and collected her things. She noticed the boy from the next table look up as he heard her picking up her sketchbook. "Bonsoir" she smiled at him before walking away, Toast quickly following behind.

"Bonsoir" she heard him reply in a kind voice as she threw away her coffee cup, plate, and the small bowl which Toast had emptied. She then exited the building, wondering in the back of her mind if this studious boy would be here the next time she was.

(Yes Jade is Lofi Girl's official name. I've heard Toast is the cat's official name but I couldn't find any official sources for that. I'm curious to see what people think of this, I've yet to decide if I'll make this a decent length book or a short one so your comments may help decide that)
