My eyes widened as I felt my heart lift slightly in my chest. Maybe, maybe... I could follow the trail and find Addison! Aiden wouldn't be mad at me anymore and maybe Brandon and Caleb would get along.
I glanced back in the direction of the campsite with uncertainty. Should I go tell them about what I had discovered? I remembered what had happened a few moments before and my annoyance quashed any signs of doubt.
I had to find Addison, and with the way they had been fighting, they were only going to slow me down.
Finding my resolve, I scanned the area surrounding me in search for any other signs when a glint caught my eye. I whirled around, feeling horror go through my chest when I saw a dagger pinning a crumpled piece of paper to the trunk of a tree. There was a stain of dark red on the handle of the dagger, and I could only hope it wasn't from Addison.
I cautiously stepped closer, glancing furtively around incase whoever had planted the note was still there. Being only greeted with the light rustle of leaves and a sweet melody of a songbird, I took a deep breath and removed the dagger from the tree. It was wedged in quite tightly, and when I slipped it into my boot for future use, I was horrified to see a inky red stain on my hands.
Hastily wiping my hand using a nearby leaf, I glanced at the note in my hand.
It was a map, with an area circled out in red and a large X over it. I felt a shudder run through me as the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. Whoever was waiting at the other end couldn't be good news.
I glanced at the sky, observing the position of the sun. My watch had stopped working yesterday so I could only guess what time of day it was. And judging from the bright light almost directly above my head, it was nearing noon.
Addison had been gone for almost six hours.
Six hours that left her alone with her kidnappers.
Against my will, I felt a sliver of fear cut through my stomach. But it wasn't for me, it was for Addison.
I glanced down at the map again, feeling determination run through me as I broke into a sprint.
I won't fail this time.

I glanced up at the old looking warehouse, eyeing the peeling paint. If I had visited this site around 40 years ago, I would probably be able to call the colour 'white' but now it was more of a brownish-grey.
I swallowed, shivering slightly as an icy breeze tore through the empty lot. Why was an old building like this so close to City Centre?
I shook the thought away. That wasn't important right now.
I tapped my heel, feeling the familiar movement that signalled the presence of the knife in the sole of my boot. If push came to shove, I'd have to use it. I surveyed the building, looking for a way in. The large double doors looming in the centre of the warehouse were open a crack and if I didn't know better, they were inviting me in.
Then again, I was practically walking into a trap.
Urgh, screw it.
I pulled my knife out of my boot, along with the dagger that had pinned the note to the tree. Hefting a weapon in each hand, I cautiously stepped up to the side of the building and inched my way across to the gap between the two doors.
I stilled my breathing before darting through the gap in the doors, knives poised. I blinked as my eyes adjusted to the darkness, resisting the urge to cough at the thick musty air.
There was a muffled cry and I whirled around, feeling my heart leap into my chest.
"Who's there?" I called as a reflex, before berating myself.
Ameteur mistake. Don't give away your position.
My eyes zoned in on a figure tied to a chair. Brown hair, matted with sweat and a dark liquid, eyes wide. There was a cloth tied over her mouth and it finally registered in my mind.
"Addison!" I cried, sprinting across the warehouse toward her.
Seeing me move, her eyes widened and she shook her head feverently. I realised too late that she was trying to tell me something when I felt the cool metal of a gun on my temple.
"Don't move or you'll both die," a gruff, low voice ordered beside my ear.
I was about to send a roundhouse kick into the stomach of my attacker when I registered what he said.
Wait. Both?
My eyes widened in horror as a man clad in black that I hadn't spotted before stepped out of the shadows and cocked a gun beside Addison's head. I felt my heart beat faster as my mind went into overdrive.
What do I do? I can't use my powers because Addison is there, and it's not like a couple of knives can win against a gun...
I shifted slightly with the intention to slash the knife across my attacker's chest when the barrel of the gun pressed harder into my skull.
"I said don't move."
My eyes darted from the gun beside my head to the one aimed towards Addison. They had me now; I couldn't do anything that would risk either of our safety.
"What do you want?" I hissed through clenched teeth, my grip tightening on my knives.
There was a low chuckle.
"Ahh, there's a good girl. Just come with us and your friend will go free," he replied, making me seethe. "One wrong move... and oops. Bye bye little girl."
I could feel my heart race, leaving a ringing sound in my ears.
What should I do in a situation like this?
I glanced back towards Addison, and I knew my attacker could feel my hesitation. He yanked my hair to the side, causing me to turn towards the right wall of the warehouse.
My eyes widened at the red blinking numbers on a medium box-like shape.
A time bomb.
"You have a little over two minutes to make your decision and get out of here or this whole thing will blow. I'm sure you don't want to be in here when that happens." he spat, grip tightening on my hair, causing me to lean my head back in order to ease the pain.
"You're joking," I tried, attempting to call them out on a bluff. "You're in here as well."
He laughed cynically, causing the other man standing beside Addison's bound figure to laugh mirthlessly as well. The sound echoed eerily in the warehouse, causing a shiver to run up my spine.
"We can get out easily. But what about your friend?"
I felt horror jolt through my chest as I considered my position.
"Fine..." I muttered, dropping my knives and raising my hands. "I surr-"
A sudden shout cut me off. I glanced up in surprise to see that Addison had somehow gotten the gag out of her mouth.
"Levi! You can't-" her cries were muffled again as the other man tried to shove the gag back in her mouth.
My eyes narrowed and I whirled into action. The tides had changed.
I ducked down, grabbing the knifes I had dropped off the floor, feeling my power pulse through my body. I threw the knives in both directions, using my telekinesis to direct them to their target. There was a dull thud and then a loud cry as the knives cut deep into their arms. The guns skidded across the floor with a disconcerting noise and I picked the one nearest to me up, considering my position.
I had to be careful how I used my telekinesis. Using it to direct the knives could be easily explained that I was a good shot but if I used it too obviously--
I gasped as an arm wrapped itself around my neck in a chokehold. Twisting in its grip, I dug the barrel of the gun into the soft underbelly of the attacker.
"Are you sure you want to do that?" I hissed, pressing the barrel in harder. I could see him gulp as his hold on my neck loosened.
Taking that as my chance, I spun around and aimed a kick to his stomach, effectively winding him. I turned around, with the intention to knock the other guy out of commision as well when I saw the spot behind Addison empty.
There was a loud clang which brought my attention to the right side of the warehouse. My eyes widened at the fast blink of the red digits on the bomb.
Less than a minute.
A glance at the two men told me that they had never intended for this to have dragged on until now either.
I stared at them as they fumbled with the wires.
"Well?" I demanded, glaring at them. "That thing is going to blow in a little over 40 seconds, so unless you want to die, I suggest you make it stop?"
An uncertain expression flitted over one man's face as he glanced at the other. I heard snitches of conversation that made my stomach turn cold.
"... can't turn it off... tried... broken..."
Feeling my heart leap to my throat, I sprinted towards Addison, crouching down to untie the ropes binding her arms and legs to the chair. I glanced up when I saw her shake her head out of the corner of my eye. She jutted her chin towards her right and my eyes widened as I saw the fallen knife.
Grabbing it, I worked quickly, in an attempt to slice through the surprisingly sturdy rope. Finally, the last one fell off Addison's wrists and I was pulling her out of the chair and towards the warehouse door. There was resistance and I saw that Addison had stumbled; her legs not awake after hours of being tied to the chair.
I grabbed her other hand and pulled her up, letting her lean on my shoulder as we made our way out. As we passed by the bomb, I couldn't help but glance at the blinking red numbers.
Ten seconds.
There was a shout of, "Levi!" and I glanced towards the door.
My eyes widened as I saw Brandon and Caleb push the doors to the warehouse open further, appearing out of breath. The concern on their faces had by breath catching in my throat as I froze, before remembering the situation at hand
"No! Go back!" I waved my free arm feverently, trying to indicate the bomb and the less-than-five-seconds before it exploded. I could feel my heart racing in my chest as they started towards me, worry etched on their faces, not quite understanding what I meant.
There was a sharp beep causing my eyes to widen in horror. I only had time to glance back at the bomb before a huge explosion caused the boxes next to it to implode, spraying debris everywhere and causing dust to plume in the air.
Then it was as if everything happened in slow motion.
An unbearable heat pushed into my face as a fire broke out, the wooden crates beside the bomb catching alight. Coughing, I raised my hand and pulled a piece of the fallen roof panel to shield us on impulse, before realising what I had done too late.
I saw an unreadable expression painted across Brandon's face for a split second before we were flung backwards, encasing my world in black.
The last thought that crossed my mind was, that I had revealed my powers.
