12 | emerald

I stood, frozen, feeling my blood turn to ice. My face was painted with horror, and I urged my feet to move. I clapped my hands over my mouth, feeling tears threatening to overflow.

I-It can't be...

Blood was still pouring from his wound, evident even through the shadow of a tall tree. I stumbled forward, feeling my heart freeze in my chest. Why did it have to be him?! If it had been me, then I could live with it...

I couldn't stop staring at the wreck; my three best friends all unconscious because of me.

I approached Brandon's still body as if in a daze. Lifting a hand, I tugged and pried open the windshield, causing the sound of protesting metal ring through my ears. Gently, I lifted his body out of the wreck, his body seemingly floating in mid air. I gritted my teeth a bit. He was heavy.

Lowering him to the soft grass, I stared as it stained red as soon as his body was safely on the ground. My heart thudded in my chest as I knelt down and put a shaky finger to his wrist; checking his pulse.

Nothing. Brandon was gone.

My heart clenched in anguish as a tear rolled down my cheek.

No!

Furiously, I grabbed his other wrist, simultaneously pressing my free hand to his neck. A pulse, a pulse. Where was it?!

Brandon was alive, he had to be! Who else would break the awkward silence with another one of his stupid jokes?! Who else would complete our dysfunctional group of friends?!

Who else would...

I blinked when I saw a drop of clear liquid fall onto Brandon's hand that I was gripping tightly. Reaching a hand up to my cheek, I was surprised to find them wet with tears.

I was... crying...?

I hadn't cried since I had broken my arm when I was three, but now I couldn't stop the tears that ran down my face. There was a stabbing pain in my heart as I swallowed the lump in my throat.

I couldn't believe it. I had lost someone else because of my stupid mistakes. Another one at my expense.

Maybe I really was a villain. But the fact remained that one of my best friends was gone for good.

Then, my eyes snapped open, tears clinging to my eyelashes. Blinking them away, my eyes darted around at the body before me. My powers... maybe I could do something with my powers?

I tried to lift the first aid bag from the wrecked boot of the car, but gasped as the bag hit me hit me hard in the chest, causing me to wince. I took in a shaky breath. I had lost control over my powers again. With the weak control I had over my powers, I decided against trying to remove the shards of glass in his abdomen.

But without my powers, I was nothing.

I clenched my fists, my nails leaving crescent moon shapes in my palm. I was stupid, useless and brought misfortune to those around me.

There had to be something that I could do...

And then suddenly it was as if I could see exactly where the glass had pierced his skin; exactly what it had damaged and exactly what I had to do to fix it up.

I placed my hands on his stomach gently, caressing the wound and it was as if I moved on autopilot. I closed my eyes and envisioned the shard of glass being gently lifted out of his stomach, the smaller shards that had shattered inside following. I envisioned the blood vessels that had been torn apart being sewn back together by miniature invisible hands, and the organ tissue being mended.

I stopped, suddenly feeling my head swim but I pressed on. I couldn't stop now; not when time was an issue...

Brandon's skin pulled itself back together over the wound forming a fresh scar tissue, and I used a wipe to clean away the remaining blood. Then, I placed my hands over his heart and urged it to beating again; to pump his blood pumping through his veins.

But it wouldn't respond.

Had I been too slow? Did I just lose another person I cared about in less than a week?

No. I wouldn't let it.

I took a deep breath, drawing out something from deep inside of me and urged it towards where my palms were pressed against Brandon's still chest. It hovered around my palms for a while, causing them to buzz with a strange energy before I gave another push and sent it towards Brandon's heart.

Beat. Beat.

I could feel it hover around his heart before it spread through his body, fading away. I could feel myself frowning in exasperation; I was desperate.

Beat! Please.

But, it wasn't enough. I squeezed my eyes shut and drew out more, a lot more, feeling tears threaten to come out of my eyes.

Whatever happens to me is fine, I just don't want to have another person suffer because of my mistakes.

I breathed in sharply as I felt as if something had taken hold of my own heart, squeezing and clenching. I choked as I felt a sharp pain stab my chest and felt as if my heart was trying to wrench it out of my body. Clenching my teeth, I gasped as the pain became unbearable, but still, I didn't stop.

Just a little longer...

Then it felt as if all the warmth had left my body, making me feel small and vulnerable. A sudden wave of dizziness hit me hard as I fell to the side, collapsing to the ground. I saw my vision fading, and felt my body becoming numb.

From the corner of my eye, I thought saw colour start to return to Brandon's cheeks as his lungs took in a ragged breath of air. Smiling faintly, I felt my consciousness begin to fade.

I tried to lift my arm, but it wouldn't move. My body felt on fire, but I was freezing cold. I drew in a ragged breath.

Was this what it felt like to die?

The last thing I saw was Addison struggling to climb out of the wreck before my world dissolved to darkness.

There was a soft crackle of static, echoing in the abandoned building.

"Red #13 has shown signs of Emerald II. I repeat, Red #13 has shown signs of Emerald II." Her voice was muffled by a hand over her mouth, but even without, the sound of her voice would have been concealed by the noise of the oncoming traffic.

"What is her status?" A deep, distorted voice replied.

"Unconscious, sir. She lacks control and chances of her survival are low."

"Fine. Fire #06 is currently heading over. Swap with her at point N13."

"Roger, sir."

The girl fiddled with her earpiece, staring uncertainly at the still forms on the grass before blending into the shadows.
