02 | signs

My face was warm.

I stretched and opened my eyes right into the offending glare of the morning sunlight. It seemed that I had stupidly forgotten to close the curtains last night in my hurry for sleep. Yawning, I sat up on my bed, ignoring the telltale throb in my head screaming that I hadn't had enough sleep.

I was never doing that again, that was for sure.

Echoes of my dream swam around in my mind, leaving a twisted feeling in my gut but I brushed it away. Dream's weren't real anyway.

Stepping out of my covers I padded down the hallway to the bathroom to get dressed. I paused with my hand on the door knob, feeling a slight shift in the atmosphere.

It was strange. Why could I not hear other signs of movement? Was my father not back yet?

One glance at the clock told me that it was quarter-past-eight and my school started at eight-thirty. I cursed under my breath.

I shoved my worries to the back of my mind. My father was probably conked out somewhere at his friend's house or something. He'd come back soon.

Dashing down the stairs, I hurriedly fixed my hair and straightened my clothes. Taking advantage of my powers for a bit, I quickly buttered a piece of toast as I packed my bag. I had stupidly forgotten to pack it last night, for obvious reasons.

I looked up at the kitchen bench as I finished packing my bag. If someone walked into the kitchen right now, they'd freak. I mean- who wouldn't if they saw a piece of bread and a butter knife buttering itself? I laughed at the thought.

I had discovered my powers of telekinesis at the young age of three. You could imagine my father's surprise when his plate started floating one afternoon when we were having lunch.

Over the years, my powers had only gotten stronger and I could perform more complicated things, such as tying laces and, buttering bread. Slowly, I lowered the knife into the sink and called the piece of toast towards me.

Grinning at my now ready toast, I slung my backpack over my shoulder and grabbed the keys from the bench. Quickly glancing at the clock, I now saw that I had five minutes to rush to school. I groaned.

Great.

~*~

I sighed, leaning my head in my hands.

First period had been hellish and honestly, a waste of time. We had a substitute and she taught us the exact same thing we learnt last week because no one bothered to tell her. Half the class ended up playing on their phones for the whole lesson and the other half left for the toilet and never came back, but I don't even think she noticed.

I was so relieved when the bell rang. One more minute of stupid trigonometry and I would have exploded.

Glancing out of the window I was currently sitting beside, I slowly started to tune out of what the teacher was saying. On top of stupid trig, second period had to be geography. With Ms Bowde-- a teacher who always seemed to have it in for me. I was broken out of my thoughts when I felt a tap on my shoulder.

"Psst! Oi! Levi!"

I glanced over my shoulder from the corner of my eye to see that it was Brandon. Disinterested, I ignored him, my mind returning to a near-sleep like state. He was probably going to tell me to pass a note to Addison -- our best friend. But he could just pass it himself.

I groaned internally when he prodded my shoulder harder. Choosing to ignore him further, I continued to pick at the glue stuck on the desk.

"Levi! Oi! Levi!! Leviathan!"

Furious, I turned around, my ponytail almost hitting him in the face.

"Just how many times have I told you now to not use my full name?!" I hissed, utterly livid. He knew how much I hated my stupid name and he had the audacity to say it in front me. "Say that again, I dare you!" I spat through gritted teeth in an attempt to keep my voice down. He almost looked scared as my glare bore down at him. Almost.

"Ah... yeah, but you were ignoring me and the teacher asked you a question." He wasn't looking at me anymore, but at the whole class who were currently staring at our exchange.

I let out a breath. If you ever wanted to hate you eternally, just call me by my full name. Inevitably, bad childhood memories occurred when a girl-- or anyone for that matter-- was named after a giant, ugly sea monster.

Just what was my father thinking when he named me?

Schooling my expression into an innocent smile, I turned to face the front again.

"I'm very sorry, Ms Bowde, but could you repeat the question?" I made sure to clasp my hands in front of me, back straight in perfect posture.

Her scowl melted into a smirk, as if imagining what a fool I'd make of myself when I couldn't answer the question.

"The question," she paused to scan her eyes over the class. "Miss Leviathan, was 'What was the large landmass covering the earth millions of years ago called?'" Her eyes were trained on me to gauge my reaction.

I bit my lip to keep from spitting out anything that could land me in further trouble. Evidently, she had heard my earlier conversation with Brandon. Her lip curled as the seconds ticked by and I felt the earlier surge of annoyance rising again. Keeping my emotions off my face, I answered in the politest way possible-- just for the sake it.

"The large land mass that covered the earth was called Pangaea. It was a supercontinent that existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras. Pangaea assembled from earlier continental units approximately 300 million years ago, and it began to break apart about 175 million years ago. In contrast to the present Earth and its distribution of continental mass, much of Pangaea was in the southern hemisphere and surrounded by a super ocean, Panthalassa. Pangaea was also the last supercontinent to have existed and the first to be reconstructed by geologists." I paused and made sure to look straight into her eyes. "Was that enough, Miss?"

She blinked, disappointment flitting over her eyes when she realised I had gotten the answer right. Her eyes narrowed, scanning the ones seated around me, as she tried to see if I had gotten the answer from anyone, frowning when she came out empty.

I discretely hi-fived Brandon under the table before turning back to face the front.

"Thank you, Leviathan for your display of knowledge," Her gaze hardened. "but I didn't ask for the attitude or for you to show off. It seems you need some time to reflect on your actions, young lady. Lunchtime detention!"

I scoffed and turned back to the window, rolling my eyes. Lunchtime detention, my ass. Like hell I was going.

Suddenly, an idea struck me causing me to grin wickedly. I looked back at Ms Bowde as she bent over her desk to scrawl a detention slip. My eyes zoned in on her hand that was dangerously close to the steaming coffee cup she had on her desk.

Hiding my smirk, I focused on the cup as power surged through my body. Slowly, it inched sideways closer and closer to the slip of paper she was currently writing on. The cup settled right beside her unsuspecting hand as I sent half of my focus to lift the large branch next to the window sill.

With a spurt of power, I swung the branch so it crashed against the window, causing everyone in the room to jump as the window smashed and splintered.

A high-pitched squeal echoed through the classroom as a few of the girls screamed, causing me to wince.

Using this confusion, I concentrated on the cup and surged all my power into knocking it over.

This time, it was Ms Bowde who screamed and jumped back as the dark liquid spread over her desk and soaked the handouts we were meant to work on today as well the detention slip she was writing on. I smirked feeling quite pleased with myself.

Mission success.

I glanced over at everyone else in the class who was looking as astonished as she was. It was silent for a few more seconds before everyone started to whisper.

"H-Hey what was that-"

"-maybe a ghost! It wasn't even windy-"

"-at Mrs Bowde. She looks so scared-"

"Do you think it was a supernatural-"

"S-SILENCE!"

The class stopped to stare at Ms Bowde with wide eyes.

I sighed with disappointment, slumping back in my seat. It seemed she had recovered already.

"Not a word," She glared at the class before turning to the class reps. "Madeline, go to the bathroom to get some paper towels. Aiden, go report to the office about the breakage of the window. Now." She then left the classroom, probably to clean up her now coffee-stained blouse.

This broke everyone out of their stupor as they started whispering theories again. I watched as Aiden left the room, casting an unreadable expression in my general direction.

I sighed. He was too observant for his own good. Through the commotion, I knew that I was the only one who hadn't reacted as the window smashed and the coffee tipped over, unlike the rest of the class.

Another curious glance caught my eye causing me to sigh yet again. Addison's glance bore into mine as she stared at me strangely.

Sometimes it was almost uncanny how she and Aiden were always on the same wavelength. Then again, maybe that was a twin thing?

Turning to face her, I decided to change the subject.

My three best friends didn't know about my being a villain, or my powers so my little stunt had probably gone against my better judgment. But I shrugged it off. What was done, was done. No point in worrying about it now.

I turned back to Addison in an attempt to distract her from my lack of response.

"So, what do you think did that?" I asked, schooling my face into a concerned expression. I lowered my voice for my next words, bringing my face closer to her's as if I was telling her a great secret. "You don't think it was a ghost, do you?"

Addison gave me a weird look.

"Ghosts don't exist."

"Then what do you think did that?" Even though I was a little worried about her figuring out my involvement in this situation, I was honestly curious as to what she actually thought.

She frowned in concentration as she glanced back towards the splintered window.

"The branch probably fell out of a tree and smashed the window on the way down... as for the cup, Ms Bowde probably knocked it over herself when she was startled by the branch."

She thought over her words again and then nodded as if to confirm that theory.

I bit my lip thoughtfully, my head tilted to the side. In actual fact, I hadn't meant to break the window, but just cause a loud bang. I glanced back towards the splintered window, feeling a tiny twinge of guilt, before shrugging it off.

If they asked, then I'd just say that's what I thought happened; it seemed logical enough.

I turned to Brandon who was sitting behind me.

"Hey, what do you think happened?" I paused. "Oh yeah, and thanks for telling me that bat face was talking to me. Didn't get much sleep last night so I was kinda out of it."

"Nah, that's fine," Brandon replied, shrugging it off. "You know what I think though? I think its a..." He paused, eyes scanning our faces as he leaned closer.

"... an alien." He leaned back as if pleased by his statement.

Addison and I took one look at each other and burst out laughing. For a rich kid, Brandon definitely could be weird sometimes. After my late night and strange dream, I found that I couldn't stop my laughter, and soon tears of laughter were streaming down my face. Wiping away a tear, I finally composed myself.

"Yes, Brandon, it's an alien." and with that, I started laughing again.
