Movie Night
A/N:Sorry it's been so long! I'm mad at myself, I promise you. I've been really sick and had tons of test this week though. But I have off next week so I'll get a bunch of chapters done to post.
I scurried passed the gentlemen and into the office. The lights were off and I knew it was safe. I flicked the switch and the lights sputtered on. With a sigh I walked toward the computer and powered it up. As I waited I scanned my desk to find multiple post-its in various colors and shapes stuck across it.
A small, heart shaped, pink one read, ‘Feel better, Lexi. I borrowed your curler too. –XOXO Chelsea.’ I scowled. Of course the accident wouldn’t be her concern. I crumbled the paper and dropped it in the waste basket under my desk.
I skimmed through the rest of them and found most of them to be a basic feel better note. I tossed the ones that didn’t manage to hold my interest. That left only two. A green square one. The person didn’t need to write their name. I knew that post-it and hand writing by heart. Sam wrote a note telling me to take the day off. Injuries are covered with pay. The second note was from Gabe which touched my heart because this place was fifth teen minutes off his route to work.
I left the two notes on the desk and walked out to the bar. I knew Trish wasn’t going to be here that early. She gets the night shift, but I did need something to do. Sam would be in meetings all day preventing me from getting John’s number. I didn’t know his number by heart and I left my phone at home last night.
It was hard for me to believe that John and Trish getting me ready for his prank was merely a night ago. It seemed more like days and meeting Noah again seemed like years. I refused to believe he’d changed so much. I wanted him to be the perfect man again. I wanted him to be the one I dreamed about, but I didn’t love the new Noah I loved the old Noah.
“Hey,” I greeted the bar tender and took a seat on the nearest stool, “Can I have a Coke?”
The girl turned around and looked friendly enough until she narrowed her eyes at me before she barked at me, “No.”
I had no clue what to say. I didn’t know you could deny drinks. As a matter of fact I was positive you couldn't. I knew the rules to this establishment back and forth. That was my job after all.
“Are we out or something?” I asked dazed.
“No.”
“So what’s the problem?” I failed to see what was wrong.
“I have the right to refuse service,” she tilted her nose up.
“No, you don’t,” I corrected and couldn’t understand what I had done to make her so furious.
“And how would you know?” she crossed her arms.
My jaw dropped. She was Noah’s girlfriend, the one I saw last night. She had to see I hadn’t done anything. She was so bitter. I stared in shocked at her. When I finally managed to pop my jaw back in place she only looked angrier. I felt another strange ping of jealousy and no longer felt the need to be considerate of her.
“I’m Sam’s assistant. I take care of the books, complaints, and I know all of the rules,” I snapped.
“Look,” she pressed the heels of her hands on the edge of the bar and leaned into me, “I’m not serving you.”
“Why not,” I glowered, but leaned into her anyway.
“Because I don’t like you,” she snarled.
“And why’s that,” I grinned wickedly. She scowled and pulled back her upper lip to show her pearly whites.
“Lexi?”
“Gabe?” I turned my head to the side to see him.
“What are you doing here? Sam told you to take the day off.”
The girl and I backed up from each other and I walked over to Gabe with a bashful smile, “John dropped me off and I’m waiting for him to pick me up.”
“I’ll take you home, if you want?” he offered.
“Um, yeah, thanks,” I wasn’t too sure of not telling John about this.
“No problem,” he grinned.
“Of course she’s got him wrapped around her little finger too,” Noah’s girl mumbled angrily.
“What’s up her butt?” Gabe asked once we were outside of the club and headed to his car.
I giggled, but then remembered I shouldn’t share the real reason with him. “It’s a mystery,” I said tightly.
“Okay,” he nodded and opened a car door for me.
“Thanks,” I beamed and climbed into the front seat. He closed the door behind me before he got in himself. With one hand on the wheel and the other behind my head rest so he could see out the back window, he pulled out. I waited until he was safely down the street before speaking again.
“So what time do you what to go out tomorrow?”
“Is nine good?” he asked.
“Sure, what are we doing?”
“You’ll see,” he grinned to himself.
“What’s that mean?” I was intrigued.
“It means you’ll see,” he winked at me.
I scowled. I had already heard one ‘you’ll see’ that week and it wasn’t working out well for me. The last one resulted in meeting Noah again with everything that entail. I sighed and waited for about another minute before Gabe parked outside my house.
“So I’ll see you tomorrow?” he raised an eyebrow as I unbuckle myself from the seat.
“Of course,” I put on my best fake smile and jumped out the car door.
Gabe watched to make sure I was in the house before he pulled away. I was prepared to slam the door behind me, but then recalled that Chelsea had been home. I slowly shut it and tip toed upstairs. I couldn’t handle being around her. Lately she had just been so horrible.
Once I was alone and locked in my room I grabbed my cell phone.
I dialed in John’s number to tell him I was home and no longer needed a ride. He picked up on the fifth ring. Someone was yelling in the back ground and before he answered my call he screamed out to the person.
“Noah, shut the hell up!” I heard the phone moving then him actually speak to me, “Hey, what’s up?”
“Gabe gave me a ride home. You’re dad told me to take the day off for the injury,” I shrugged playing with my blanket.
“So I don’t have to pick you up?” he asked surprised.
“Nope,” I beamed, “You won’t be seeing me for the next two days.”
“Why?” he pouted.
“I have a date tonight and a date tomorrow night,” I stated proudly.
“I’ll help you get ready,” he offered.
“No thanks John.”
The silence prolonged for a minute. He didn’t like to actually be denied. I’d say no to him plenty of times, but that time it felt like a no to wanting to see him and neither of us liked that.
“But,” I said cheerfully after the beat of silence, “I’ll text you later.”
“What are you wearing?” he asked seriously.
“I don’t know,” I shrugged, “We’re not exactly going to a ball, I’ll just wear something casual.”
“Wear what I gave you this morning,” he suggested.
“No,” I protested simply because I was tired of him winning all the time.
“Do it.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Please?”
“No.”
“Don’t wear anything too slutty,” he chuckled and hung up on me.
I sighed and threw my phone gently onto my bed. I really had no life outside of John and work. I had nothing at all to do. I couldn’t even remember what I’d done in my free time before. I was so pathetic I couldn’t think of anything to do. I decided to call Trish and hang out. I needed girl time and Chelsea was not an option. She agreed and I was driving to her house.
Once she let me in I collapsed next to Derrick on the couch.
“Hey,” he grinned, “You’re in a good mood.”
“She needs girl talk,” Trish smiled sympathetically.
He sighed and jumped off the couch with his hands in the air. He walked out of the room in a haste to avoid the girl problems about to spew out of our mouths.
“Last night John didn’t take me home. He didn’t want me sleeping alone so he took me back to his, Austin’s, and Noah’s house.”
“Wait they live together?” she asked confused.
“With Austin,” I nodded.
“Who’s Austin?”
“Their roommate.”
She rolled her eyes at my lack of detail. There wasn’t much I could say though. I met him for about two minutes and later he saved me from Noah. He was nice and, from what I could tell, wanted to avoid as much conflict as possible. I screwed up those plans pretty bad.
“So you were with him again last night?” she asked trying to hide her disapproval.
“Not exactly John did his best to keep us apart.”
“His best? So you did see him last night,” she prodded.
“Yeah,” I responded. I saw she wanted more, but suddenly I realized I didn’t want to tell her. She didn’t know the full extent of my relationship with Noah. As far as I knew only Sam knew the truth and Trish thought he broke up with me because I was a control freak. I quickly composed a lie.
“And I had to go to the bathroom. We accidently bumped into each other. It’s not that big of a deal,” I shrugged.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, it’s just… I spent so much time pining for him that I forgot he could’ve changed,” I sighed.
“What do you mean change?” she inquired.
“Nothing,” I shook my head quickly, “I didn’t really talk to him at all yesterday. We both ignored the other being there.”
She frowned then brightened up, “You want me to cheer you up?”
“Sure,” I faked a grin and sat up straighter.
“I’ll help you get ready for your date tonight,” she pulled me up the stairs before I could respond. I was beginning to get used to being every one’s Barbie lately.
I let her play with my hair, do my make-up, and spray me with her extensive perfume collection. But I refused to let her touch my outfit. Partially because I wanted to listen to John, he’d be right about everything so far, but mostly because I knew she’d stick me in something way too played up for a casual date. When she was finally finished she gave me a big smile and spun my chair to face the mirror.
“Wow,” I blinked trying to make sense out of this new girl in the mirror, “I look… different.”
“You look beautiful,” she beamed, “Now go have fun on your date.”
“Thanks Trish,” I gleamed and walked out to my car. I noticed I had left my phone in the car, but decided it was best no to look at it. It could’ve been Chelsea, and I wasn’t in the mood to deal with her right now.
I took my time going back to my house it was only seven fifty and it was a fifth teen minute drive back to my house. I had time to kill. I walked into my house and slammed the door this time. I cringed when I remembered that Chelsea was room, but there was no response. I questioned if she was here or if she was mad at me too.
I shook it off and went to get my purse. This time I checked through contents. I threw in my phone and ran downstairs to shove a slice of pizza in before Dan got there. I calculated that there was no time for me to heat it up and just ate. I was finished for one second to spare. I popped a piece of gum in and was out the door with Dan.
“Hey,” I beamed.
“Hey,” he grinned down at me and led me to his car.
He opened the passenger door for me and shut it behind me. A tingle ran up my spine as I remember that this was my first date since Noah and I broke up. My heart beat rose a little when he came into the side door.
“So your friend lives about thirty minutes from here?” I asked to make small talk.
“Yeah,” he said while pulling out of my drive way, “We has movie nights all the time too. So we’ll probably be watching a movie you’ve never even heard of before.”
I nodded, “That’s cool. Do you guys do it every Saturday?”
“Most of the time,” he shrugged and made a right turn, “Usually not at his house though because he has roommates.”
The conversation continued like that for the whole thirty minute car ride. Idle small talk filled my ears and spewed from my mouth. It wasn’t the most fulfilling conversation, but it was nice just the same. I was relaxed and everything was going perfectly until we reached the door and I looked up.
“Lexi?” Noah choked out.
“Do you two know each other?” Dan asked.
“Sort of,” I nodded and saw John come up behind him.
“Lexi!” he exclaimed and grinned wildly when he saw what I was wearing, “You’re still wearing the clothes from this morning. Ha! I knew you would listen to me.”
“You already saw each other today?” Dan asked.
“John dropped me off at work,” I grinned before the guys could tell him how I spent the night.
“Well, come in,” John smirked then slapped Noah’s back and walked away with his drink.
“Yeah, come in,” he stepped aside.
