Brother Of Mine

Grace wakes up to the sound of glass shattering. Her fear could only be seen from the frown on her face. She quickly but quietly slides out of bed. She crouches down and grabs a wooden bat from underneath her bed. Her brother gave it to her just in case something just like this happened. She uses the back of her heels to walk on to move silently. Grace was sure the sound came from her younger brother's room. She loves Calvin with all her heart, but if this was a fake alarm she was going to let him have it. Her older brother, Jacob, was slinking out of his room as she approaches Calvin's door. She glances back at the also frowning Jacob. Then she turns back to the door and opens it. She jumps into the dark room and waves her bat around. She stops when she sees the broken window. Shards of glass covers the floor beneath it. Some are on the empty bed which was near the window.

"Calvin?!" She calls out as Jacob turns on the light.

Jacob curses as he looks at the glass on the floor and red liquid on the windowsill.

"B-blood?" Grace gasps. It was only a little bit, but enough to make Grace feel afraid.

Then Jacob dashes out of the room. She hears her dad, Edward Thomas, grumble down the hallway with the little thuds of her mom's slippers. Mary, Grace's mother, makes it to the room first.

"What has happened in here!?" Mary grasps the sides of her aging face.

Jacob runs in nearly pushing his father into the room. "Hey, what's the rush!?" Edward furrows his brows together.

Jacob looks up at his dear father. "Dad, someone took Calvin."

"What!?" Their parents gasp.

"How do you know? He could be hiding." Grace puts her tiny hands on her hips.

"Hiding?" Her brother asks in disbelief. Jacob shakes his head and goes to the window as Grace begins to look for Calvin in the closet. The parents stand in the middle of the room at a lost of what to do. Jacob looks up from his work and asks, "Shouldn't you be calling the police?"

"Y-yes. O-of course." Edward stutters. He briskly walks out of the room. Mary follows in a deep shock.

"What are you doing anyway, Jacob?" Grace asks him.

"I'm getting the blood from the windowsill." He answers her.

"Shouldn't you leave that for the police?" She stops her search and walks over to him.

"I'm only taking a little bit." Jacob tries to calm her. It doesn't work.

"That is so totally wrong! You are suppose to leave the evidence for the police." Grace crosses her arms in anger.

"Fine!" Jacob decides to act like he gave up and didn't collect any blood.

"You have the sample still in your pocket, Buddy." Grace raises her eyebrows.

"I want to find out who it belongs to!" Jacob narrows his eyes.

Grace threatens him with her bat. "Put it back!"

"Like I can. If I do I'll be contaminating the evidence. Plus, I can take that bat back, you know." He defends himself.

Grace has a torn look on what to do. She lowers her bat, but raises her glare at her brother. He rolls his eyes and starts to exit the room. His dad comes in stopping him. "The police said if we can't find the weapon the person used to break the window then they will report it as a runaway."

"That means that they will wait twenty four hours before searching for him!" Jacob yells in disbelief.

Edward nods and asks, "Will you help me look for it?" Grace and Jacob nod and start to search. Edward looks out of the window. "Well that was easy."

Grace and Jacob stop searching and walk to the window. A brick lays abandoned on the sidewalk with glass underneath it.

"They must have used it and dropped it because the glass is underneath the brick." Jacob smiles then quickly frowns. He and his father run out of the room. Grace stays looking out of the window, but she is no longer focusing on the brick. She tries to peer over the dark, looming buildings. She then looks around in hope of seeing her brother. She frowns and leaves the window. Calvin was really gone.
