Chapter 4
K A T E
Harry, Hermione, Ron and I made our way to the great hall. I had to leave them at one point to go with the first years, who were going to get sorted by the hat. I was waiting for the last of the students to arrive when someone tapped me on the shoulder. Turning around, I was met with the sight of Cedric Diggory once more.
"Hello, Cedric. It's good to see you again." I greeted with a smile. Cedric leaned on a near by wall and looked down at me. I mean, how tall can a guy be?
"Hey, Kate. I thought we agreed to see each other over the holidays?"
"Well we probably would have if it wasn't for the whole world cup incident. I had to go straight home because of that. And besides...we had no way to contact each other. I only just got my owl yesterday." I replied, fiddling with my fingers that were infront of me.
"I suppose so. Are you going to get sorted into a house now? If you are, I hope you're a Hufflepuff." He questioned and I nodded my head.
"Yes I am actually. And that reminds me, I have to go now and so do you. The assembly's about to start." I shooed him off and made my way to the kids. I was to go last because I had to take Snape's last name. And no-one seemed to have a last name after S.
All the first years had their name called and there was only me left. The hall was silent until my name had been announced.
"Snape, Katheryn." The hat shouted. The whispers began as I made my way over to the hat and sat down on the stool.
"Snape has a daughter? Who would ever have a kid with that moody professor?" Someone whispered on the Ravenclaw table.
"Why's she she coming here now? She's a sixth year isn't she?"
"She's probably exactly like Snape, don't talk to her if she's with us!"
I kept a straight face as the hat began to asses me.
"Hmm, you're just like your father! Slytherin!" It shouted and the Slytherin table cheered. I found Cedric with a frown on his face and then the golden trio mirroring it. They were probably hoping I'd be with them. As I sat down, I thought back to what the sorting hat had said.
'You're just like your father.' Did he mean Severus or my real dad?
There was no time time to keep thinking however, because Dumbledore had begun his speech.
"Now that we're all settled in and sorted, I'd like to make and announcement." As he spoke the caretaker came through the doors and rushed up to Albus as he spoke. "This castle will not only be your home this year...but home to some very special guests aswell. You see, Hogwarts has been chosen..."
The caretaker stopped Albus and spoke to him. I couldn't tell what they were saying, but it must've been important as the caretaker ran back down the hall again, and out the door.
"So Hogwarts has been chosen to host a legendary event: The Triwizard Tournament. For those of you who do not know...the Triwizard Tournament brings together three schools...for a series of magical contests. From each school, a single student is selected to compete. Now let me be clear. If chosen, you stand alone. And trust me when I say...these contests are not for the faint-hearted. But more of that later. For now, please join me in welcoming...the lovely ladies of the Beauxbatons academy of magic and their headmistress, Madame Maxime."
A gathering of beautiful girls came strutting through the doors and were met with boys drooling over them, girls glaring at them. As they walked down the middle of the tables, they did some sort of dance. Then, Madame Maxime came in.
"Look at the size of her! She's gigantic!" I heard Draco say from down the table. His friends laughed with him, but everyone else on the Slytherin table, including me, just stared at him with a blank expression. Dumbledore kissed her hand and then went back to his speech.
"And now our friends from the north. Please greet the proud sons of Durmstrang...and their high master, Igor Karkaroff."
The men came in and to be honest they looked like Russian monks. With their fur hats and dull clothes, not to mention that most of them were bold. But they were strong and bulky, attractive in any woman's eyes, including mine. Krum came in and made eyes with Hermione, who was basically glaring at him.
"Albus." Igor greeted. Dumbledore greeted back: "Igor."
After I had ate a filling meal, another group of men came in and placed a large object at the front. I had no clue what it was, but I had a feeling we were about to find out.
"Your attention please!" Dumbledore shouted as he walked up to the thing. "I'd like to say a few words. Eternal glory. That is what awaits the student who wins the Triwizard Tournament. But to do this, that student must survive three tasks. Three extremely dangerous tasks. For this reason, the Ministry has seen fit to impose a new rule. To explain all this...we have the head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation, Mister Bartemius Crouch."
"Oh, God. Why him?" I grumbled under my breath and slouched in my seat. The man came out with his horrible looking face. Lightning suddenly started outside and I couldn't have asked for a better timing. The ceiling started to rain and students screamed. A man with a fake eye got out his wand and stopped it. It was Mad-eye Moody, Snape had told me about him being the new defence against the dark arts teacher.
He walked down the steps and seemed to lock eyes with me before looking at Harry Potter. Dumbledore went up to him and greeted him with a handshake. Moody drank from a vial before turning to everyone. Surely he's not allowed to drink alcohol whilst working? Crouch came to the front.
"After due consideration...the Ministry has concluded that, for their own safety, no student under the age of seventeen shall be allowed to put forth their name for the Triwizard Tournament. This decision is final."
Students started to detest. I would have too, but I became seventeen just a day before. Legally allowed to participate, but it doesn't mean I was putting my name in.
"That's rubbish! That's rubbish, you don't know what you're doing!" Fred Weasely shouted from the Griffindor table.
"Silence!" Albus shouted and immediately, everyone quieted down. Dumbledore then used his wand to lower the curtain that was hiding the object from view. A cup, or more so a goblet, was revealed to everyone's eyes. A blue flame then came out of it.
"The Goblet of Fire. Anyone wishing to submit themselves to the tournament, need only write their name upon a piece of parchment an throw it in the flame before this hour on Thursday night. Do not do so lightly. If chosen there's no turning back. As from this moment, the Triwizard Tournament has begun." He explained.
Later that night, I went to the kitchens to have a drink before I went to bed in my new room. I no longer needed to live in the cottage even though it was an option. But as I made my way back, I spotted Igor Karkaroff sneaking into the room that held the Goblet of Fire. He closed the door behind him and after a few seconds, I opened it again slightly to see what he was doing.
He walked up to it and put in two enchanted pieces of paper. The flame became bigger and he smiled in satisfaction. Igor then began to turn so I quietly shut the door and hid behind a pillar. Luckily, he walked straight passed me, not even noticing I was there and I sighed in relief. Then, I went straight back to the Slytherin common room to get to my quarters and went to bed.

It was the next day and I had defence against the dark arts as my last lesson with Griffindor. It was good because that meant the Weasely twins were in it and I would be with some people I actually knew. I was one of the first people to arrive at class, which was surprising because I was new. But then again, I knew this castle like the back of my hand. I used to explore it over the holidays when no-one was around. I had found over a thousand secret passage ways. I sat down and waited for everyone else to arrive.
The twins were the last to come in, which was to be expected because they were trouble makers. The took a seat on each side of me, but I didn't take much notice in what they were doing. I still heard them though.
"This'll be great this will!" George exclaimed to his brother and I. Fred leaned closer to me and explained.
"Apparently to someone I know, Moody is teaching us about curses."
"Curses?" I asked confused.
"You know, forbidden curses. Didn't Snape teach you anything?" George questioned, looking to his brother and then back to me.
"Yes he did. I probably know more than you do. I thought we weren't allowed to learn about forbidden curses?"
At that moment Moody walked in and began to speak.
"Good evening. I am Professor Moody. Ex Auror, Ministry malcontent. And your new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. I am here because Dumbledore asked me to. End of story, goodbye, the end. Any questions?" He began. Fred, being a smartass, decided to get clever.
"How many times have you had to repeat that introduction?"
"Too many times to count mister Weasely number one. Weasely number two do you have anything to say?" Moody replied. George shook his head. "Good. When it comes to the Dark Arts I believe in a practical approach. Now, the unforgivable curses. What are they?"
I put my had up slowly, I had never had to do this before today and it made me nervous.
"Go on then Snape, what curse?!"
"Um, the uh Imperious curse sir." I answered, fiddling with my fingers and looking at my desk.
"Yes, well done Katheryn. Your father would be proud at your knowledge. You've learned well." Moody praised and I smiled.
"Now let's see what it does." He said as he made his way over to a jar and got out a large spider. I grimaced. I absolutely hated spiders.
"Imperio!" Moody chanted and took control of the spider. He began to fling it over to students, but as it got to me, I backed up in my chair and threw it away with a swish of my hand. Using my wandless magic. Moody grinned, but everyone else just stared at me.
Oh right, I wasn't meant to do that. Whoops.
"It seems we have someone in this class that can do wandless magic. What a rare sight." Moody announced and got closer to me, my eyes widened. "Tell me Katheryn, does Snape know of the powers you posses?"
"Yes, he does. He taught me how to use them." I replied, holding my posture. George and Fred were looking at me with their mouths wide open.
"Stop gawking class. I have a lesson to teach!" Mad eye scolded and went back over to the spider, who was now on the desk. "Give me another curse. Weasely number one, tell me a curse."
Fred got up from his seat. "The Cruciatus Curse." He stated confidently
"Correct, now come here."
Weasely number one, as Moody called him, moved over to where Mad eye was stood. "The torture curse." Moody mumbled, leaning over the spider. "Crucio!"
The spider began to shrivel up and squeal, which I found oddly satisfying. I shook off the feeling and saw Fred's face. I couldn't tell whether it was amused of saddened. Mad eye stopped after a while and lowered his wand. Fred went back to his seat.
"Now the last curse..." Moody placed the spider on someone's desk and then suddenly shouted: "Avada Kedavra!" The spider died instantly and the student started to cry. I was smiling, but quickly wiped it off my face when I realised I was. Why did I find death something to smile about? Surely that wasn't a good thing.
"The killing curse. Only Harry Potter has been known to survive it. And he's in this school."

I was walking back from the lesson when I found Cedric talking to his friends in the corridor. I sighed looking at him from afar. He was truly handsome. From his tall figure to his amazing personality. The moment however, was interrupted by non other than the devil's son himself.
"Why are you staring at a Hufflepuff? Surely you don't like him, do you?" Draco asked mockingly. I stayed silent.
"A Slytherin and a Hufflepuff together? Ha! You're delusional Kate. That would never happen in a million muggle years. Especially not to a girl who doesn't even know where she came from or who her real parents are. People only like you for your power or because they have to to be on Snape's good side. No-one would ever love you." He laughed.
"Oh shut up Malfoy! You have no idea what love is! If it's meant to be, it shall happen." I defended. Draco laughed again as he walked off. I was about to leave myself, but I was stopped by Cedric.
"Hey Kate! Are you thinking of entering the Triwizard Tournament?" He asked catching up with me.
"Oh God no. I mean I could, but if I was chosen I don't think I'd be able to do it. What about you?" I replied, still walking with him even though I had no place to be.
"I'm actually heading there now to put my name in. Could you come with me? I'd like your support if you could." Cedric admitted and I smiled reluctantly. It was a good thing that he wanted to enter, but it didn't stop me for worrying about him. What if he got hurt? Or worse! What if he died? Those things could happen.
"Yeah, sure. Just be careful if you do get chosen. You're one of the first people I met and I don't want you dying on me."
"That's not going to happen." He stated, looking me dead in the eye.
We made it to the Goblet room and people were already filling in. Cedric's friends came up to him and they started talking. I moved away and sat beside Hermione, who had a book in her hands.
"Hello Hermione." I greeted. She turned to me and smiled.
"Hey, Kate."
I was about to say something to her, but Cedric's laughter made me look up. His friends were clinging onto him and pulling him over to the goblet.
"Come on, Cedric. Put it in!" One of them said. He laughed and stepped over the age line. As he lifted his arm up with the piece of paper that had his name on it, he looked at me and smiled. I smiled back and gave a thumbs up. Then, he proceeded to drop it in and go off with his friends.
"You like him." Hermione stated, nudging my shoulder with a goofy grin. I nodded in reply, not saying anything in case anyone heard and then told Cedric. That would be embarrassing.
The twins came running in with vials in their hands and shouting. People were clapping for them. They had this great plan to use an ageing potion to put their names in the goblet. Which obviously wasn't going to work.
"Well, lads, we've done it." Weasely number one proclaimed. Weasely number two then said: "Cooked it up just this morning."
"It's not going to work." Hermione mused from beside me and I nodded in agreement.
"Oh yeah?"
"And why is that, Granger, Snape?"
"You see this? This is an age line." I pointed out and Hermione continued.
"Dumbledore drew it himself."
"So?" Fred brushed off.
"So a genius like Dumbledore couldn't possibly be fooled by a dodge as pathetically dimwitted as an Ageing potion." Hermione scoffed.
"Ah but that's why it's so brilliant!" George said
"Because it's so pathetically dimwitted." Fred finished. The twins got up onto the bench and shook their potions.
"Ready, Fred?"
"Ready, George."
"Bottoms up." They both stated, drinking the potion and jumped over the age line.
At first I thought it had worked, but after they put their names in the goblet, flames spit out and made them go flying out of the circle. When they got up, I could see that the ageing spell had backfired and made them old men. They blamed each other and started fighting, rolling all over the floor. Hermione and I exchanged smug looks as they fought.
Everyone stopped cheering for the fight when Viktor Krum, Igor Karkaroff and one other man came in. I kept a close eye on Igor as they came up to the Goblet. Viktor put his name in and then looked at Hermione again for the second time. Hermione smiled at him in reply.
"You like him." I whispered, using the same line that she had to me earlier.
"So what if I do? It takes my mind off Ron, who doesn't even realise that I like him." She blurted out and my jaw dropped to the ground.
"Ron? You like Ron? As in Ron Weasely? How long, tell me details I've never had girl talk before."
As people left the room, Hermione and I had our girl talk until people began filling in again for the champion reveal.
