Chapter 50

"I can't take it anymore," Oliver said as he rubbed his chest. Only five minutes are left until they were past their limit. "He's not going to get back in time."

Rayvon and John were doing their best to comfort him, but they were feeling helpless, just like everyone else.

"I don't think he's coming back," Zachariah said to Jed. They were sitting in the snow and watching the air extremely close.

"He has to," Jed said. He was beginning to feel really upset. Poor Oliver, he knows they're close to their limit now and there was very little he could do, except try until failure. "I'm going to heaven."

Zachariah watched his friend stand up. His face looked determined.

He thought about it and realised that yes, he would also do anything he could to get Vinny back.

"Jeduthun," He said as the angel flashed his wings. "I'm coming with you. We're doing this together."

Jed nodded and took a breath.

"We have to get him home," He said and the angel could see how much it meant to him.

Vinny was part of his family and he would not stop until he got him back.

* * * * *

Vinny was sitting in a first aid room at the back of the mountain rescue building.

Luckily, there was a doctor on hand today who could attend to his wrist without needing to go to the hospital.

His wrist was put in a cast. There was no way that he would heal like a Vampire if he was going to be past his limit soon.

The woman Caroline was staying with him in the room but Vinny didn't even look at her. He didn't know why he was sitting here but every time he tried to leave, she would stress and say he had to stay for his results.

He had his head scanned just in case, but he was completely fine.

He was a little concerned that they'd come back odd and unusual. He is a vampire and a lot of things about him are very different compared to a human body.

He then realised that he should probably make a run for it before he exposes himself.

He jumped down off the bed, trying not to wince with the pain in his chest.

As he walked towards the door, the woman put down her papers and quickly stood up.

"You have to stay," She said and grabbed his arm but Vinny doesn't take orders from anyone.

"I'll do what I want" He grumbled and pulled his arm away and walked through the door.

The woman to his annoyance continued to follow him.

"What if it's serious? What if you need-"

"I'm fine," Vinny said as he straightened out his waistcoat and carried on walking.

"But you could be really-"

"Look," Vinny said and turned around. "I appreciate your help, but I need to go home."

The woman watched as he turned and walked back through the little cafe. She knew she shouldn't keep pestering him but he was a mystery and he shouldn't have survived in such weather with just a shirt and waistcoat.

What was he doing before she found him?

"Wait," She said and followed him.

Vinny silently rolled his eyes but discretely gripped his chest. He was struggling so much but on the outside, he kept a good poker face.

His breathing was a little shaky and if he was by himself, he probably would've broken into tears. But he is a strong willed person and can swallow back his sorrow.

For now.

The vampire kept walking until he was out of the doors.

He looked around but didn't have a clue what to do now. He needed to start praying or something. He had to get into heaven.

He saw a wooden bench only a few meters away and went over to sit down.

He rubbed his chest in the process and took a few deep breaths.

Caroline watched him for a few moments but her curiosity got the better of her.

"It's not safe for you to sit out here without a coat" She sighed. "Are you going to phone your husband? Won't he be wondering where you are?"

A big bright light burst in his head as he suddenly searched his pockets.

His phone wasn't in his front pockets so he quickly stood up and it must have been some struck of luck or amazing turn of fate but his phone was still there.

He pulled it out and sat down. It was still working and on full battery as he searched for Oliver Vanderwood.

It still had the shark emoji next to his name.

Every time they upgraded their phones, Oliver would make the extra effort to put that next to it.

He clicked on the contact and held the phone to his ear.

"Please work, please" He whispered.

He almost jumped up with happiness when it started ringing.

"Please answer" He whispered again but was quickly aware that Caroline was there. He got up and walked around the small building.

He kept going until he knew he was out of anyone's earshot.

"Come on Oliver" He muttered.

Suddenly,

Five of the demons who abandoned him on the mountain side landed in front of him.

Vinny almost dropped his phone when they caught him by surprised and grabbed him. He was weak from being separated from his soulmate and they knew this.

They held something over his mouth as he struggled against their strong grip.

"Oliver" He breathed but the demon forced the phone out of his grip and stamped on it, smashing it to pieces.

Whatever they were holding over his mouth was strong and the vampire's knees buckled.

He fell right into the demon's arms.

They had played him.

They waited until his limit was stretched before coming after him, knowing he would lose his strengths.

With his last attempts of a struggle not benefiting him in the slightest, the vampire fell unconscious.

"Hey!" Caroline yelled. "Matt! Matt, I need your help!"

Without thinking, she ran towards them and tried to help but it was a dangerous act. Even if the demons were human she'd still struggle.

Matt came running out and looked left and right. He could hear a commotion and ran around the side of the building.

He got a shock when he saw Vinny unconscious and Caroline getting wrestled to the ground.

He gasped and ran over to help as a demon held something over her mouth.

He jumped on one of them but their strengths were too much for a human and he was flung to the ground.

They struggled and put up a fight but the demons drugged them and let them fall unconscious too.

"Would you look at that, we have more toys to experiment on" The demon leader chuckled.

The rest of the hell-hounds smirked at each other before holding them securely and plummeting up and into the sky.

Jed and John had tried, argued, shed tears and got angry at the gates of heaven but the angels didn't let them in.

They wouldn't listen to their appeals of rescuing Vinny.

They said that if it was Rayvon or Luka, then they'd help but because Vinny wasn't one of 'the gifted' then he wasn't important.

Jed could've gotten violent and broke into heaven but that would've cost him his wings and he would truly be lost without them.

They landed back in the Vanderwood dining room heavy hearted and to Oliver's disappointment, empty handed.

"No" He breathed and let a tear slip down his cheeks. "Where is my vampire?"

"He's still stuck in the other world. We waited but the tear didn't re-open. We flew up to heaven but they wouldn't let us make the transition to the other world."

Oliver covered his face with his hands and let more tears fall.

"What does this mean for him then?" Duke asked Zachariah. He had an extremely sad expression, just like everyone else.

"It really is in your son's hands to get back home. We've tried so hard but there really is nothing we can do."

Rayvon hugged his dad as he blinked back his own tears. The mansion already felt broken without Vinny in it and he was so scared for him.

"I need him" Oliver sobbed. He was done holding back his tears, he needed his soulmate but for now, he had to cope without him.

John rubbed his son's back and swallowed the lump in his throat.

Suddenly, Oliver doubled over and gripped his throbbing chest.

"No" He wailed in despair, they had reached their limit.

Everyone shared worried glances as John hugged him, trying to stay strong for his son but there was nothing worse than feeling this helpless.

"I can't live without him" He sobbed.

Just then, there was a bright flash in the middle of the dining room and three angels landed with their big magnificent wings.

Everyone recognised Aliyah, the angel midwife but the other two female's were strangers to the Vanderwood's.

Oliver looked up through watery eyes, he was in so much pain and to see the angels looking so sad made him understand that maybe this wasn't good news.

Aliyah looked at Jed and Zachariah, they could also tell that they brought bad news.

"I'm so sorry Oliver," She said and took a step forward. "We have tried so hard to persuade the elders to let us rescue Vinny and take him through heaven and back into this world, but they said no."

Oliver's heart was breaking in front of everyone as his hands began to shake.

"We were allowed to come back into this world because the elders gave us permission to look after you Oliver" The woman who was standing next to Aliyah said. "The great war is now put on hold as the demons are back in the other world with no access to your son and Luka."

This is when Aliyah's eyes showed the most amount of sorrow.

"I'm afraid Oliver, Vinny will be separated from you for a long time. But-"

"How long?" He interrupted, feeling the pain in his chest grow even stronger.

"It takes a long time to re-open the tear," She said, not wanting to say this but he had to know. "He'll be gone for at least three to four years."

Everyone in the room felt like their eardrums burst as they gawped at the angel.

"F-Four years?" Madison stuttered. She was in complete shock and refused to believe the angel's words.

Rayvon stared at her with wide eyes.

"Are you kidding?" He questioned. "They won't be able to survive four whole years apart!"

Oliver's mind was blank. The noise of silence was ringing in his ears and all he could think about was the empty years ahead. There was no way he would survive.

Everything he loved about Vinny was flashing in his mind now that he knew he wouldn't see, touch and smell him for so long.

"That's why we're here, to keep you alive Oliver."

John was horrified and wasn't prepared to let his son suffer for so long.

"There's no way the elders can think this is acceptable," Jed said. "How could they ignore this and keep them apart for so long!? Who's with Vinny? Who's going to look after him!?"

"The demons will keep him alive," The female angel said quietly.

Everyone held their breaths, knowing that Vinny was now captured and they would keep him alive because they would want to experiment on him.

Oliver then burst into tears.

He couldn't take it anymore.

He was in so much pain and to be told that he would remain in this state for as long as four years was more than devastating.

"P-Please, please just save him" He sobbed loud and hard into John's shoulder.

Madison was already crying too and Duke's eyes were watery.

Luka was squeezing Rayvon's hands that were now trembling slightly. He was trying to be positive but how could he?

His dad would be gone for three to four years and he was going to be in the hands of demons for all that time.

Corey and Panuleon knew what it was like to be trapped and captured by demons, but to be separated from your soulmate and captured at the same time was much worse than the torture that was yet to come.

"This isn't right," John said as he let the tears from seeing his son so full of sorrow, fall down his cheek. "You're supposed to be angels, you're supposed to help people, not make it worse!"

Jed looked down to his feet. He felt so awful and so angry at himself.

He had failed to do his duty.

"We're here to stay until Vinny returns home," Aliyah said, clearly holding back her tears too. "I can't imagine anything worse. Oliver, we are so sorry."

But Oliver couldn't hear her over his sobs of great sadness. All he could concentrate on was Vinny. They've never spent a single day apart and now a chunk of four years was going to be lost in his life.

It was only four human years but that was still far too long for them to be separated.

The Vanderwood's continued to stand in a now gloomy dining-room.

This was day one.

Very dark clouds would hang over the mansion. No more smiles, no more happy memories and no more Vinny for four whole years.
