Chapter Nine - Adelaide

Adelaide rolled over in her bed, sighing as she readjusted her pillow. Philip's words from earlier that day still haunted her.

"Adelaide, how could I fall in love with another woman when I am already in love with you? Just stay here. I will return for you."

She still didn't know how he could do that. She didn't feel for him, not love. No man would ever come along that she would love. She wouldn't allow herself to fall in love, not after- she shook off all thoughts of it.

Still, she lay in bed, restless. She could not sleep, not now. Addy still worried about Philip. He would surely die. There was no way he could defeat the ogres, not by himself. She sighed and closed her eyes, praying sleep be bestowed upon her.

Roisin whimpered in her sleep, then let out an ear piercing wail. Addy jumped out of bed and picked up the crying infant. "Hush now, mo chùrachain. Everything is all right. I am protecting you now." She rocked back and forth and made little shushing noises. "It is all right, nighean."

Roisin's cries slowly started to fade away and she stuck her little thumb in between her rosebud lips. Her little eyelashes fluttered and she seemed to start to fall asleep again.

Adelaide sighed. She never would have thought that at eighteen, she would have a baby. She never expected to be here. her life was forever changed. Her parents were dead, she was alone, and now she had a child. Even though Philip told her to leave the child with another village woman, Addy  could not bring herself to do it. The moment she laid her eyes on the baby, she was in love.

"My sweet, sweet Roisin. How could I ever leave you, darling?" Adelaide set Roisin back in her cradle and watched as the baby slept soundly. She felt a primal instinct to care for the child. Her heart swelled when she looked at Roisin or held her. It was less than a day but Addy already felt like a missing piece was found.

Addy crawled back into her bed and her eyes became heavy. Her breathing became steady and she drifted off into sleep.

"Adelaide, ye know I will always love you, lass." He played with her long red locks and twisted them around her fingers.

Addy sighed and buried her face into his chest, inhaling the scent of him, all masculine with a hint of juniper and leather. He was all hers and she knew it. "I know, my love."

His deep laugh shook her body and he sighed contentedly as he pulled her closer to him. They lay in  a pile of hay in a field. The sun began to set slowly, painting pastel colors in the sky.

"Addy, I know ye're only sixteen, but I want to marry yu." He pulled her away from him and looked into her eyes, his green orbs fixed on hers.

"I want to marry you too, Angus." Addy smiled at him.

"Mmm, mo ghaol. I want yu." He leaned in and rubbed his thumb over her bottom lip. "I want yu so badly." Angus pressed his lips to hers and kissed her passionately.

Adelaide pulled away and looked at him, her eyes wide. "Angus..."

"I'm sorry, Addy. I just want yu so badly." He ran his hands through her hair. "So badly, ghaol."

Addy kissed his cheek and nuzzled her nose along his scruff. "I want you too."
