10. Utah

Sitting in the car, passing through Nevada and crossing the border to enter Utah, I notice it's getting dark outside and that Ian is getting tired. I turn in my seat to look at him and open my mouth to speak up, but before words are spoken, he cuts me off. "You don't have to drive. I assure you I am fine." He snaps at me and I sigh.

Even though his attitude is slightly bothering me I decide to go on with my plan. "I was thinking that maybe we should go and find ourselves a place to stay the night and have some dinner? We have been driving and taking turns for ten hours now. Don't you think is it would be a smart move to take a night rest?"

He turns to look at me and then looks back at the road again. "As much as I would love it to spend a night somewhere in an actual bed, we can't afford it. You have nothing left remember?" he says with a sad expression on his face.

I can't help but smile at him though. "What if I told you I have a solution that covers both of those problems? I have a friend who went to college here in Utah. She has a spare room seen the fact that her roommate went back home for summer break. We can stay there for free, I can make some phone calls and get us some extra money to spend."

Ian glances at me again, this time a little too long which almost makes him hit the car in front of us. "Eyes on the road!" I scream and beside me I hear Ian slightly chuckle. "That was not funny! You could've killed us!" I yelp and beside me he laughs.

"But I didn't, so just relax okay? We will be fine. So that friend of yours, how can you contact her? You memorized her number or something? You have no phone remember?" With his words Ian brings me back to reality. I sigh at the realization and then think of something.

I look at Ian with a smile on my face. "Can I borrow your phone? I think I may know something." Ian rolls his eyes, but gives me his phone anyways. I unlock his phone and then go to his Facebook app. In the corner of my eye I see he is about to protest. "Hush! I am only looking her up and send her a message. That girl is seriously married to her phone. She will reply soon enough." As I speak to him, I send out the message to Jamie, quickly explaining the situation and asking for her number.

Like I predicted it only takes her a minute to send her phone number in reply. I quickly call the number and I am soon greeted by her cheerful voice. "Hey there stranger! I've tried to call you yesterday, I hadn't heard from you in a while. Everything alright?" Jamie asks.

I love how Jamie and I only have been friends since I met her in my senior year in Florida. We instantly connected and soon we were the best friends you could imagine. We didn't go to the same college since she was accepted on a scholarship somewhere in Utah, but we never lost touch.

"That's actually a long story and why I reached out for you like this. I need a favor. Can you please, please let me and..." I look at Ian beside me and quickly figure out to describe him. Not knowing I was taking my sweet time checking time, a punch in my shoulder brings be back to reality. "A friend! Yes, is there any chance you can let me and my friend stay the night at your place?"

'

On the other side of the line I hear Jamie giggle. "He better be extremely hot for you to space out on me like that. But of course, you and your boyfriend can stay the night. But you have to promise me to tell me what the heck is going on. I never thought I would see you here in Utah. How long till you'll be here?" She asks.

I look at the signs we pass on the road and see they are ten miles away from Cedar City, the place where Southern Utah University is situated. "We are ten miles away from Cedar City, we shouldn't take long. Can you send the exact address in a message?" I ask. On the other end of the line Jamie confirms and we exchange a quick goodbye. "See you in a bit!"' I say before I hang up.

As soon as I hung up the phone Ian turns to look at me quickly and smirked at me. "You liked what you saw? You know you didn't have to stare at me that long. I know you think I am hot." He says, cockiness written all over his face.

I roll my eyes and scoff. "Don't flatter yourself Anderson. Whatever we had back in those days... let's just say it's over. You have Jessica remember? The stuck up blonde you kept sucking face with? Don't think I didn't notice that, it was pretty hard not to." I snapped at him and then turned to look out of the window.

I don't why, but the fact that me might be in a relationship with Jessica really bothered me. I am one of the few people Ian ever opened up to, and the way I know him just doesn't fit with Jessica's personality. And maybe Lillian is right and is there still a little part of me that has feelings for him. I don't know and I am not happy to find out.

Ian's POV:

I slightly glance over at Kat to see her reaction to my cockiness and the smirk. Back in High School girls, Kat included, loved the smirk. This time though she only rolls her eyes. "Don't flatter yourself Anderson. Whatever we had back in those days... let's just say it's over. You have Jessica remember? The stuck up blonde you kept sucking face with? Don't think I didn't notice that, it was pretty hard not to." She snaps at me.

I know I am not her favorite person at the moment, neither is she the one I want to spend so many hours with in a closed space. But the fact the snapped at me slightly bothers me. Kat never snapped at anyone, especially not at me.

Somehow my head was filling with thoughts of her, how she used to be and how I feel like she has changed so much. "You have to take the exit here." Kat says and then looks back out of the window, making it impossible to make any conversation.

Half an hour of nothing but silence and driving later we pull up in front of the address Kat's friend, Jamie. Kat throws open the door on the passenger's side and runs to the front door. She knocks on it and is soon greeted by a red head with medium long hair and pulls Kat in a tight hug. I can see them chatting and then Kat turns around to point at me.

I take this as my cue to come out of the car and walk over to the girls. When I am about to join them Kat breaks the silence. "Jamie, I really need to use the toilet. Can you tell me where yours is?"

Jamie gives her what looks like a knowing look. "Sure, it's upstairs and down the hall, last door on your right. When you're ready come to the living room across. We have some serious catching up to do." Kat just nods and the rushes up the stairs. Jamie then turns to me and gives me a look. "So you are the Ian Anderson." She said with an unreadable expression.

The look on my face must have portrayed my confused state of mind and she let out a humorless laugh. "You have no idea do you?" I just shook my head no, not knowing what she was talking about. Jamie gave me a sympathetic smile. "When I met Kat for the first time she was an absolute heartbroken, lonely girl. Whatever you're thinking right now, about her, about the situation. Just keep in mind that she really didn't want to leave Wade Valley. She was miserable back in Florida, she wanted nothing more than to return back home, but she couldn't do it."

I groan in frustration. "What in the world is going on? Why couldn't she stay? What happened to her that made her want, or apparently need to leave so badly?" I run my hand through my hair and let out a deep sigh.

Jamie shook her head. "I'm sorry, but it's not my place to tell you that. She needs to tell you that herself. But what I can tell you is that is has nothing to do with you and that you need to be careful. She's in a pretty vulnerable state after visiting for her father's town. It wasn't easy for her to be there, to see you. I am surprised to find out you're the friend that she's with."

I don't know why, but I am starting to feel for Kat. Apparently something bad happened and all I did was giving her some more crap. Yes, you got that right, I am feeling guilty. I need to fix this as soon as possible because the feeling is nagging me and the drive back home is far too long to remain awkward. I need to talk to Kat.
