fourteen.
___
Saturday came around, and you still felt broken. Hyunjin barely glanced in your direction at school, Yui started smirking whenever she saw you, the wedding was getting closer and closer, and you couldn't stop any of it.
It felt like you were falling into a deep dark hole that you would never find your way out of. Constantly falling without knowing where you were going was how you felt; your life would keep going and you wouldn't be able to avoid the inevitable.
You sighed and shoved your food around on your plate. "Stop playing with your food. It makes you look immature."
You heard your mother, but you didn't stop, and that made her really angry. She stood up and slammed her hands against the table, and you didn't even flinch.
"Why can't you listen to me, Y/N! I wish I had a better daughter, one that did everything for me! You're so absolutely worthless, and you wonder why I treat you the way I do!"
You looked up and nodded curtly. "I know."
"What do you mean, 'I know'?!"
She walked over to you and slapped you across the face. "You're an awful daughter. I would rather have Daehyun as a child."
She walked away and you took a deep breath, looking at your father. You averted eye contact and got up, setting your plate on the counter. You went into the living room and opened the front door, stepping back when you saw Yejoon.
"Hi, princess- is that a hand print on your cheek?"
You let him examine your cheek and sighed. "What's up, Joon?"
"I came to check on you, and I wanted to ask if you wanted to get lunch?"
You nodded and shut the front door, walking to his car with him. "Don't tell Hyunjin that my mother hit me. He won't care, and it'll just waste his time." You said, looking over at Yejoon. "Please."
"What makes you think I was gonna tell him?"
"I could tell. We've been friends for a long time, Joon."
He pulled out of your driveway and headed into the city. "Why do you think he won't care? You mean everything to Hyunjin."
"He has Yui now. What's the point in bothering him?"
He glanced at you in shock. "Yui? You think him and Yui have a thing?"
"I know it. I can tell by the way Yui looks at him, and by the way Hyunjin smiles when he's with her."
Yejoon sighed and shook his head. He knew there was no point in trying to tell you that you were wrong, because you wouldn't believe it until you saw it with your own eyes. He pulled into the restaurant parking lot and got out, linking arms with you. As soon as you walked in, you made eye contact with Hyunjin. You tried to turn around, but Yejoon pulled you back and dragged you to your table.
"Yejoon, Hyunjin and Yui are here, and I don't want to be here anymore." You whispered.
"So? You came here with me to have lunch, not them. Don't pay attention to them, just pay attention to me."
You could hear Hyunjin's laugh behind you, and you smiled sadly to yourself. You nodded slowly and let Yejoon know you'd try to focus on him, but you couldn't. You could hear Yui's voice, you could hear Hyunjin's giggling, you could hear their excessive flirting, and it was starting to give you a headache. You covered your ears and hung your head, making Yejoon gently lift your head back up.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"I keep hearing them talking." You whispered.
He furrowed his eyebrows. "What are you talking about? They're too far away for you to be able to hear them."
You took your hands off your ears and listened for a moment. Yejoon was right, you couldn't hear them.
"I swear I heard them, Yejoon-"
"It's okay, I believe you." He paused. "Are you ready to eat?"
You nodded and ordered your food moments later. Yejoon kept trying to have normal conversations with you, but you kept bringing Hyunjin up in the end.
"Y/N, I love you, but you need to stop." Yejoon said. "You can't keep doing this to yourself."
"I can't help it. I feel so numb without him around, and- and I don't know what to do about it."
"You can't rely on him like that." He sighed. "I'm going to the bathroom."
You nodded and continued eating while he left. On his way to the bathroom, he pulled Hyunjin away from his table and went to the bathroom.
"What's up?" Hyunjin smiled.
"Y/N. She's so off, lately." Yejoon told him.
"Okay?"
"What do you mean 'Okay?', Hyunjin? She didn't want me to tell you, but her mother hit her today, and she swore that you wouldn't care even if I did tell you. She said she could hear you and Yui talking at the table, but you guys were too far away from us to be able to hear you. She's not eating, she looks like she hasn't slept, she's clearly broken, and it's because she misses you, Hyunjin."
"If she was so broken, she'd come to me and talk about it." Hyunjin said, his voice soft.
"She was going to that day she saw you with Yui in the library. After seeing you with her, she was too upset to talk to you. You mean so much to her, but she's scared to tell you because she thinks you have a thing with Yui."
"I do have a thing with Yui."
Yejoon sighed and closed his eyes. "Okay, Hyunjin. Have fun on your date, then."
Hyunjin watched Yejoon walk out of the bathroom and stood there. He wasn't the only one that felt broken.
