Skadis

The more Bjorn Ironside watched Brynhildr, the more he listened to her cold and calm voice, the more pain he wanted to cause her. Her presence awaken something evil snd feral inside of him, he wanted to hear her scream, he wanted to hear her beg for mercy, he wanted her, yes, Bjorn Ironside wanted the White Queen for himself, she wanted her to be only his, so that he could destroy her. Never before in his life he felt that way towards any woman, never before any woman could drive him to madness just by her presence. And that bracelet, with Viking symbol that she wore around her wrist was bothering him so much, he wanted to break it so badly.

"You maybe bewitched my brothers, but not me. I am going to be your end." Bjorn hissed.

"I don't want to bewitch you Bjorn Ironside. I only want to overthrow you. And it's clear that you will waste the lives of your soldiers in wain just because of your pride, and you will lose. You could never win." Brynhildr said and then Bjorn couldn't take it anymore. He took out his sword, and so did she. If she had to fight this man to death then she will do it. She will come back to Ivar tonight, no promise was more important than that.

Her soldiers were ready to strike, and so were his, and that is how did dangerous dance of the life and death began.

The more Vikings that were hiding in the woods approached to join Bjorn in his fight.

Brynhildr didn't have time to watch her soldiers die, she had to focus on Bjorn, and fight him carefully, she didn't have as much experience in the battle as he did, but she strong, her wish to come back to Ivar was overcoming her mind and body, she didn't want to end like this.

With a swift move, she broke something that was giving Bjorn the upper-hand, she broke his shield. Bjorn throw it away and charged again. The Vikings were dying in the battle as well, and for a moment Brynhildr could swear she could her the song of Valkyres as they were taking their souls to Valhalla and she didn't want to follow them.

More Vikings emerged from the shadows, and Brynhildr was scared that she is going to be outnumbered.

"White Queen, allow us to fight for you and King Ivar." One of them said. Bjorn couldn't express his anger when he recognised what is rest of the bandits he had released, that was one of the biggest mistakes he had ever made.

"Traitors! I am going to kill you all!" Bjorm yelled.

"You are welcome to fight by my side." Brynhildr said to them as she swung her sword at Bjorn again.

As she fought Bjorn, she heard the the screams coming for her camp. Then she realised, that Bjorn was only distracting her from the real battle, her camp was under attack and she couldn't defend it. The fire was raising from her camp and the smell of the burning flesh filled the air.

"No..." Brynhildr whispered.

"Will you now surrender queen?" Bjorn asked mocking her.

"I am not surrendering!" Brynhildr said attacking him again, but the rage didn't allow her to focus on fighting and Bjorn easily kicked her sword out of her hand stabbing her in her shoulder. Brynhildr then realised that she can't win this battle, she made a mistake and she prayed that Ivar is still alive.

"It is over Brynhildr. Ivar died with the rest of your army." Bjorn said, he was more then pleased to see her fall in front of him.

"No!" Brynhildr yelled trying to lift her trembling body from the ground. Her people were dying, those who pledged their loyalty to her were being burned alive by the Vikings, and it was her fault, because she didn't know hoe to fight a war. The pain of losing people she loved so dearly was cutting her deeper then any sword ever could. Igor, Ivar, and even Hvitserk who probably didn't have enough time to warn her soldiers about what is going on. She would die the most painful death for all of them again and again, but she couldn't live without them.

Brynhildr looked up at the the sky. It was dark, there was no stars, everything she could see was a gentle, white snowflake falling from the sky. The snow that was always calming her down in the darkest times now reminded her of Godess of ice and snow that she heard so much about and admired her more then she admired even Odin himself.

"Skadis, please help me." With a broken voice she called upon the Snow goddess. She couldn't do anything else but to pray, so her prayers came from her broken heart, so they were as honest as they could be.

"My gods are not going to help you." Bjorn said.

"Skadis, help me, I am begging you." Brynhildr whispered as the tear emerged from her eye.

The cold, yet merciful godess Skadis heard her prayers and she decided to give this woman a strength, she never gave to anyone before, but the price for it was Brynhildr's tender heart.

But did she really need s heart to feel the pain, now when she was losing everything?

Brynhildr felt the cold air caressing her whole body, for a moment she felt naked. The coldness was spreading, and it was almost unbearable. She felt her emotions dissappear, the fear of dying under the sword of Bjorn Ironside, the fear of losing everyone she loved, everything was replaced by the ice that was warping around her heart so tightly, enough to protect it from the pain she was feeling.

She didn't know what was happening to her, but she was sure that Skadis answered on her prayers.

Brynhildr got up from the ground, hypnotised by the beauty the new feeling inside of her that was slowly consuming her, and she wanted more until every human emotion in her faded away, until she was completely free from the chains of her own emotions.

Gently, she placed her hand above the ground that was slightly covered with snow, and she felt that it was listening to her now, as the ice raised from it.

Godess Skadis embraced her spirit allowing it to take the power she needed to defeat her enemies and make them pay for what they done.

"I am not going to surround Bjorn. But you should. " Brynhildr said.

Bjorn and his man started at her in disbelief, in front of their eyes, something cruel and dangerous was being created from the fallen queen, and now everything they could do, was to beg her for mercy because a human could simply not fight her.

The ice raised from the ground striking every man that stood by the side of Bjorn Ironside leaving him alone.

"Will you now kneel in front of me Bjorn Ironside?" Brynhildr asked. Bjorn shivered at the way her presence was now affecting him. His sword was not completely useless in the fight against her.

Why among everyone godess Skadis choose this woman? Maybe because Brynhildr have been in some way representing the winter itself, maybe that is why Skadis loved her so much, and maybe this was destined for Brynhildr and Skadis was just waiting for her prayer.

Hvitserk stood in the distance with Ivar and Igor trying to reach out to Brynhildr. What is left of the Rus army was with them, but they were too late to save her from losing humanity to Godess Skadis.

"Brynhildr!" Ivar yelled her name. He knew the stories, a legends about the people who were given the same power as Brynhildr, and he knew that she is not a woman he used to know, that she is something else now.

"What is happening with her Ivar? How is this possible?" Igor asked.

"Godess Skadis." Ivar answered.

"What did she do?" Hvitserk asked.

"She took away her humanity." Ivar answered not wanting to believe his own words. If Skadis took her, then she won't be able to be able to ever feel anything again and it was too late to save her but Ivar was still hoping that he was wrong. Ivar walked towards Brynhildr as fas as his legs would allow him.

"Ivar wait! If you are right, then it's not safe to try to stop her!" Hvitserk yelled.

"I love her Hvitserk, not even the Gods can take her away from me!" Ivar said.

"You are crazy!" Hvitserk yelled following his brother.

"Brynhildr listen to me. This is enough. You don't need any of this. I am alive and I am here. Please, come back to me, I am begging you, don't let Skadis to take you. You are strong enough without her." Ivar said trying to approach her. She was different, her eyes lost all the warmth within them, her presence didn't make him happy as it always would. He had lost her.

"Get away from me." Brynhildr said coldly.

"Ivar you must stop her!" Bjorn said but Ivar ignored him.

"Please listen to me. Hatred must never take a place of love. And I know that you love me." Ivar said.

"Shut up cripple." Brynhildr said. Ivar was hurt by her words more then he could ever express, he was used to people calling him a "cripple" all his life, he was used to the pain that came along his disease but he never expected to hear those words coming form her. But he knew that if she wasn't an emotionless human being that she was right now, that she would never say that.

"You don't mean those words. You would never hurt me." Ivar said. He reached out and touched her cold arm. Brynhildr winced at his touch, almost like it burned her.

"Ivar..." The name escaped her lips because she wanted to feel something so desperately, but it was still so hard for her to do that.

"Yes, it's me, and I love you more then you could ever imagine, I loved you before and I will love you now. Remember what I told, I will take you to Kattegat and merry when I become a king." Ivar said gently trying to reach out to her again. For a moment she allowed herself to enjoy his sweet words, and even allowed him to warp his arms around her. But the hug didn't last for too long, when Brynhildr touched him, the thin ice started covering him from his back. That was something Brynhildr didn't want to do, but she couldn't control herself.

"Ivar get away from her!" Hvitserk yelled but Ivar didn't even move.

"Ivar! Kill her!" Bjorn yelled knowing that his brother now had a chance to put a knife in her heart. Hvitserk and the rest of the Rus stopped Bjorn from attacking her now. The Rus were afraid of her, now understanding what was happening to their princess.

Ivar shivered at the sudden feeling of her cold embrace but he couldn't let her go even if that costed him his life.

"Brynhildr, you wouldn't hurt me." Ivar whispered to her feeling his body becoming numb from the ice that was covering him.

"I am sorry Ivar." Brynhildr said and pushed him away from herself before she the ice could kill him. Hearing his painful words didn't make her frozen heart ache this time, she just simply didn't want to kill this man.

"I can't, I am not capable of loving you anymore."
