Ch 7: The Nighmares
Teri sat in her room as she watched Ellitoes set up the biggest of forts. Elliotes screw hooks into the ceilings and let a pink canopy drape over Teri's bed. He placed covered nightlights around her bed to keep the inside of the canopy lit brightly.
"Wow." Teri cheered with excitement. "You set it up."
"Your mother asked me to," Elliotes said with a laugh. "I am willing to do anything to help my priestess sleep with ease."
"What about the nightmares?"
"What nightmares?"
Teri nodded viciously, however, she did not go into detail about her dreams.
Eventually, Teri grew bored of watching Elliotes set up her room and ran out to go bother her mother. As soon as Teri left the room Elliotes placed his hand over the nightlight. With one simple touch, the nightlight turned from a bright white to a dull rainbow color.
"Elliotes! Dinner!" Monica called from the kitchen.
Elliotes quickly left Teri's room. He is still learning about the different foods mortals eat, but he truly does like what Monica cooks for him. He is not a fan when Teri cooks for him, however, he will literally eat whatever she puts in front of him. Whether it be playdough, real food, or mud pies.
Over dinner, Teri went on about her day at school. The more she talked the more uncomfortable Elliotes became. Monica just observed the way he acted, all the way until Teri was tucked into bed.
Monica decided that when it was time to tuck Elliotes into bed she was going to interrogate him. Sleeping next to Elliotes was still a new concept for her, but it was the only sure way that she could keep an eye on him in the middle of the night. That and she sort of tricked him into cuddling, so that's also nice.
"What's bothering you?" Monica asked Elliotes.
"Teri is having nightmares," Elliotes said.
"She always has nightmares," Monica said. "She screams a lot during the night. Poor girl has been through so much at such a young age."
"What do you mean?"
"No one wanted to see us together. They made giving her a stable home so hard."
"But you love her so much." Elliotes argued.
Monica nodded as she drifted off to sleep. Though she was able to sleep peacefully Teri suffered.
Teri found herself running in a dark hallway. The hallway led to a path of wet moldy stairs. Though she was afraid she ran down the dark path being chased by all sorts of giant bugs.
Teri ran until she reached a door to the unknown. She banged on the door helplessly as she screamed for help. She called for her mom, she called for Elli, and she even called for the hamster Elsa. Hamsters eat bugs, right?
She thought her prayers were answered when the door swung open, however, the sight was horrific. Teri saw a giant stone throne where a black-winged angel sat. Teri followed the throne to the base where she watched as her mother was being eaten by giant ladybugs. She witnessed that the bugs had already ripped off her mother's arms, and began tearing off her legs. "Mommy!" Teri cried.
"Teri." Her mother said weakly run.
The ladybugs turned to look at Teri. Teri sat down in fear.
"Go!" The angel ordered.
The ladybugs began to charge Teri. When Teri screamed a bright rainbow light came and shielded her.
"Wake up." Elliotes' voice whispered.
Teri woke up and realized she accidentally went to the bathroom on herself. She began to cry as her room door swung open, and Monica ran in.
"Mommy." Teri cried. "You're alive."
"Of course I am alive," Monica said as she began to survey Teri. "Did you pee on yourself again?"
Teri nodded as she cried.
"It's okay. Let's get you cleaned up."
"Where's Elli?"
Monica was so focused on Teri that she failed to notice where Elliotes went. Elliotes currently stood in the rainbow light that was summoned in Teri's dreams. He stood in her unconscious state as he looked upon all the bugs.
The room sent a chill down his back. The room was familiar to him, yet depressing. If he doesn't feel safe, then he can only imagine how Teri felt.
"Well this is new," said a familiar voice.
Elliotes looked towards the voice and saw Morpheus. 2000 years really showed on his face. His eyes were darker and seemed dead inside.
In contrast, for the first time ever anger was shown on Elliotes' face. Not only was he trapped for 2000 years, but he was looking into the eyes of the one who entrapped him. Not only that he chose to torture the one who freed him.
"Long time no see, brother." Morpheus greeted.
"Seven billion people in the world, and you pick on mine." Elliotes snapped.
Elliotes was not his usual self. He was consumed with anger. 2000 years in solitude really does change a person. He also didn't need to put on a friendly act, Teri was not around.
"It's not like that. I always pick on little kids. I mean look around. Giant bugs." Morpheus laughed. "Little kids are scared of the weirdest things. Anyway, how have you been?"
Elliotes moved his hand up and separated the colors of the rainbow. The streams of light turned into individual arrows and went flying towards all the bugs striking them. Once the rainbow light hit them they vanished.
Morpheus looked at Elliotes with curiosity. Not only was this the first time he saw his brother in 2000 years, but this was the first time he saw his power being used. And it was being used against him. "Hmm. Is this the power of the God of Empty dreams? Just erasing my hard work?"
"Hard work?"
"Yes. I have to create these nightmares." Morpheus explained. "The goal is for that nightmare to last forever. That way their family will pray to me for their freedom. Comas, sudden infant death syndrome, sleep paralysis, I invented all of those things."
Elliotes spread his wings. The once-rainbow color changed to a solid red.
Morpheus smirked at Elliotes. "I see you got your wings. Do you know what red wings mean in the mortal world?"
Elliotes glare didn't let up. He had no control over why his wings changed colors. "Get out!" Elliotes ordered.
"Or what?"
Elliotes summoned a red blade from his hands.
"This isn't the Land of Dreams El." Morpheus laughed, as he summoned a black blade. "I will fight you here but it will do more harm than good for her."
Morpheus used his sword to point to the small child that now stood behind Elliotes. Elliotes looked back and saw Teri standing behind him afraid.
"I will leave her alone if you want. Like you said there are seven billion people I can play with instead."
"Fine,"
"No Elli." Teri cried. "Don't let him hurt anyone else."
Morpheus watched as Teri let out a golden light as she cried. The light rained over Elliotes turning his wings back to their rainbow color. Morpheus quickly flew towards Teri trying to attack her with his blades. Elliotes flew in his path and caught his blade with his free hand.
"You may be the God of Nightmares, but in her dreams, I am the all-powerful one," Elliotes said as he snapped Morpheus' blade with his bare hands. "Now get out."
