Ito women know what it is to be godly. Ito women are taught to run, and never, ever stop. Ito women learn that no fall will ever hurt them—it will only make them real. Ito women throw themselves into anything's path, and the sky will bend around them. (How lonely to be something that nothing wants to kill.)

ROWEN ITO is cursed in every way a woman can be.

Girlhood rots between her teeth, a sickness so bitter it aches. Godhood erodes within her ribs, an oath she never agreed upon. Her female rage is biblical. It is incoherent, unidentifiable, inconsolable. All she is to others is a tragedy, shaking fists and trembling teeth, a monster of a martyr. She knows she is burning, made of fire. She was taught she doesn't need saving, that she should never be put out. She learns to never, never tell anyone—never tell anyone anything ever again. She never got to be a child, a girl, because Ito women don't ever get the chance. Her mother told her it will always be like this. (Cruel mothers are still mothers. They just give birth to their pain instead of their child.)

TRADITION IS not the worship of the ashes, but the preservation of the fire.

The unlearning takes time. The cage is open, but she can't find it in herself to step out; the knife in her heart is loose, but she can't reach up and pull it out, and no one is willing to pray for a monster, the sinner that needs it most. She becomes a firefighter because a flame is the only thing to come near the burning shell of her body, to touch her and embrace her and engulf her.

THAT IS, until she meets a man who refuses to fear anything that could burn him.
