VIII - Bitter Reunion

Shisui

What I'm sure of, is that Kaeru is one of a kind. He went along with my jokes and weird actions, he didn't care about my status as 'Lord Fugaku's nephew', he doesn't mind about strange things I'm doing, and I can't believe it seems like no one notices that he's quite a genius.

We were currently sitting inside my room, eating more sweets.

"Well, I know this is weird, but who was that Uchiha?" I asked him. He turned at me, snickering slightly.

"Obito. His name is Obito Uchiha."

"That scar on his face is cool." I commented, "How do you know him?"

"He was one of my brother's teammates. I met him when he first barged into our house because he was looking for Aniki."

"I thought your brother was the last of his team. Tell me more." I said, "Because I got a feeling that he will be a cool sensei."

He grinned, taking another dango from the plate and throw it into his mouth, "He's about the same age as Aniki, but their personality are opposites. Obito always comes late at training because he's helping someone, and this is one of the reasons why Aniki dislikes him. He's a fun person to spend time with, he jokes around a lot but he's a good person."

"He was on a mission with his team, when things got messed up. They almost got trapped, and he saved Aniki, but half of his body was crushed by a large boulder. He thought he was going to die, so he gave one of his newly gained Sharingan to my brother."

"Oh, so that's how Kakashi-san got the Sharingan! I always wonder..."

Kaeru nodded. "Well, not long after his teammates left, he heard a voice telling him that he got a chance to survive, but he had to transport to another dimension, bringing someone with him. He agreed, and the first person who crossed his mind was me!"

"... Another dimension...?"

"Yep!" Kaeru exclaimed. He could be childish sometimes, or, most of the times, "That place is called Earth! We got recruited as special agents! Something bad happened to me, though. Drug overdose, I think that's it? Anyways, those medicines messed up my mind a bit. Leader-sama got mad, he beat me up until I snapped and killed him. They locked me up in this place called asylum, and most of them were rude to me, so I killed them too! They got mad at me, and decided to kill me. I died, and BAM! I got back here!" He explained, all in one breath.

My jaws dropped, literally. He giggled at my expression, shaking his head.

"I'm alright now, don't worry. I-..." He stopped himself, looking as if he had just remembered something, "Wait. I returned when I died. That means... on Earth, Obito died. Right?"

I slowly nodded. That makes sense. "...Then, Obito-sensei has died twice, correct?" I asked back.

His eyes widened in realization. Kaeru grinned wider, and abruptly stood up. "I'm gonna find him! I want to hear the story of his second death!"

Before I can reply, he had already waved at me, running out of the room.

A smirk made its way onto my face. Yeah, my team would be amazing, definitely.

Kakashi

A knock on my door interrupted my reading session. Now, that's definitely not Kaeru or Shisui. They both would burst into the house. Not Anbus either because they would only teleported inside.

My friends? No, I don't think I have friends.

Lazily, I went to the door, opening it, to find Lord Hokage there.

"Kakashi," he started, before I could ask him anything, "I'm not going to explain anything, because your little brother and his teammate gave me a headache. But there's someone who wanted to meet you. Take your time, Team Minato."

Team Minato? What?

My biggest question was answered when the Hokage teleported away. There, behind the spot where Lord Sarutobi was, stood the biggest idiot I've ever known.

He had his fingers in his black hair, his onyx eyes staring at me with a strange glint. The right half of his face was scarred badly, while he kept wearing that stupid grin on his face, waiting for me to say something.

Now, don't get me wrong. I watched his death, but my brother had told me that he's alive. And my recent days had been filled with craziness, so this is nothing.

I sighed, looking back his eyes. Seems like he got a transplant. At least they're both of the same color, unlike mine.

"Okay. How the hell can you be here?"

His eyes widened, his hands raised to cover the lower half of his face as he faked a hurting expression.

"Kakashi, how cruel, you don't even miss me?"

I chuckled, and he bursted out laughing, suddenly pulling me into a brotherly hug.

"I'm back, Hatake." He muttered, but I can hear his grin in his voice.

When he pulled away, I was proven right. He was grinning wide, ear to ear, walking past me, entering the house.

"Now, Kakashi, before you start the story for me, I have a question." The Uchiha started. I looked at him, closing the door behind me. He walked towards the kitchen, calmly taking out some snacks and put them in his mouth. I watched as he turned his attention back at me, crossing his arms.

"This reunion is not yet complete. Where's Rin, Sensei, and Kushina-san?"

I froze.

No One

At Kakashi's lack of reaction, Obito narrowed his eyes in suspicion. However, years of working as a special agent had sharpened his sense, his instinct. His eyes soon widened in realization.

"No... Don't tell me..."

"I'm sorry, Obito." The Hatake mumbled, "They passed away."

"A-All of them...?"

Kakashi weakly nodded. Obito looked down and slammed his fist onto the table, growling in frustration. "How?" He asked, "Explain."

"When Kushina-san gave birth to her son, the Kyūbi went wild, destroying the village. She died protecting her newborn son, while Sensei, as the Fourth Hokage, died sealing the Kyūbi inside his son."

"What about Rin?" He asked, his voice getting madder. At his teammate or the reality, or himself, no one can tell.

"She died... KIA."

"Details, Hatake." the Uchiha technically growled, "I know she's dead and I asked you how, so answer me!!"

Kakashi looked away, clenching his fists. "During the war, Kirigakure sealed the Three-Tails into her."

Obito instantly looked up, "You can't be serious."

Kakashi didn't react, instead he lifted his right hand, staring at the his palm as he gritted his teeth. "We were surrounded by Kiri nins, and we found out that they wanted to release the Sanbi in Konoha. And for Rin... This scared her..."

Obito shook his head in fear. Rin wouldn't kill herself, right? Wait, he thought, my Mangekyō Sharingan was awakened, that means something happened with Kakashi right? It could only be awakened when the user killed his loved ones, that means-...

No... "You-... You killed Rin?!"

Kakashi's breath hitched. There, the words he hated the most. He couldn't deny it, though, it's the truth.

"... She ran between me and the enemy, her heart was pierced by my Chidori."

Obito snapped. His Sharingan was instantly activated, as he grabbed Kakashi's collar.

"You promised, Kakashi. YOU F*CKING PROMISED ME YOU WOULD PROTECT HER!!" He yelled, "When I died, I gave up my love for her. She loved you, and so I trusted you to take care of her. I gave you my eye so that you could protect her!!"

"Obito, I'm really sorry-..."

"I don't want to hear that! You might have gone through hell watching them all died, but do you know what's the worst feeling humans feel? Not sadness, it's guilt." He hissed, "Had I know this would happen, I would have killed myself sooner, so that I could return to this world before she died in your hands."

"You... killed yourself...? W-Why..?"

"Didn't I tell you?!" Obito snapped, as he released his teammate, pushing him away, "Guilt. Watching Kaeru suffer that much, executed in front of me, I couldn't live with those memories. Do you know what I was thinking the whole time?" He asked, "When Kaeru died, he died believing that no one loves him. His only friends were Anko and me, and none of us could help him."

"When he first come back here, did he trust you? Did he think you loved him? No, do you love him?! You hated him, I remember as much, Kakashi. You were an arrogant, selfish jerk. Maybe you still are, Hatake."

"I know." The silverette admitted, "I know, but-..."

"What about Kushina-san and Sensei's son?"

"Naruto? I... I don't know."

"Is this some kind of joke?!"

"I don't know him! I was still at shock about Sensei's death, too!"

"You are a shinobi. He's just a kid. That's not a reason, Kakashi."

At this, the Hatake narrowed his eyes, slowly getting annoyed. "Stop blaming things on me, Obito."

"I'm not blaming you. What I mean, is that you could have prevented it, even if it's not your fault. You could have make the situation a little better."

"Oh, so it's partially my fault that the reality is this horrible now?"

"You said it yourself. If only you threw away that pride of yours, maybe they would have been alive." Obito stated, turning away from his best friend, "I believed in you. I envied you. I respect you, as a shinobi. I thought of your father as a hero, and I thought you would be the same."

"Don't mention my father, Obito." Kakashi growled, "And just to remind you. At least I'm here, in this world. Unlike you. When all of those happened, you didn't even exist in this world, living peacefully with Kaeru in that Earth. You and Kaeru didn't even know what happened to Rin, to Sensei and his wife."

Before Obito could retort back, Kakashi continued, "Look at you, Obito. Yes, I watched so many people die here, but what about you? You only have to watch over Kaeru. What happened then? He lost his freaking mind, becoming a killer. He was tortured and locked up, and even executed. He-..."

"It's not Obito's fault!" A voice yelled, cutting Kakashi off. The two shinobis' eyes widened, recognizing the voice. They turned, to see Kaeru standing in the doorway, gripping the edge tight, tears threatened to fall from his eyes, "Kaeru is a bad boy, that's Kaeru's own fault! Obito did nothing! You should blame Kaeru!"

"Kaeru-..."

"Kaeru is sorry!" The boy screamed, before he ran out. They could hear how he tripped, but nevertheless got back on his feet, slamming the front door open and exited the house.

The remaining two of Team Minato turned back to look at each other. Obito's gaze turned into a glare.

"Now you've done it. Your own brother, Kakashi." The Uchiha stated, "You are his big brother, yet it seems like you know nothing about him."

Kakashi stayed silent. Obito let out a heavy breath, shoving his hands in his pockets.

"That child, he puts everything into what he does. That child, loved everyone he met. That child, yes, he's crazy, but he loves you more than you understand!" He said, "After wasting 12 years, you finally allowed him to come close to you. You brought yourself in and now you've just thrown him away like he's nothing. You broke a broken child, and I hope you can live with yourself, Kakashi Hatake." Obito finished, as he walked away.

"Where the hell are you going now?"

"Looking for Sensei's child, and filling the adoption papers." Obito replied, "You'd better find Kaeru now, or I will never accept you as my teammate. No, not that, I won't ever think of you as a human."

As Obito slammed the door shut, Kakashi groaned, leaning on the wall, looking up.

"Damn it, I messed up everything, again..."

Kakashi stood in the middle of the forest, soaked as it had began to rain. He had looked everywhere he could think for Kaeru, and yet he couldn't find him.

"Kaeru!" Kakashi called out once more, but the rain overpowered the man's voice and it was nothing more than a loud murmur through the sky.

"Go away, Aniki!" A voice replied, and Kakashi sighed in relief. He at least knew that Kaeru was close, but he didn't know exactly where to go.

"Kaeru? Where are you?"

"No!! Go away!" Kaeru screamed again, and Kakashi began to follow his voice as best as he can.

"Kaeru, I'm sorry." Kakashi said, the rain pounding down on his shoulders. "I didn't mean for you to hear that conversation. It was suppose to be between Obito and I."

"No! Aniki was mean to Obito! Obito tried to protect Kaeru! Obito loved Kaeru! Aniki never did! Aniki was only ever mean to Kaeru!"

"And I'm sorry for that Kaeru. I apologized for that, because I used to blame for mother's death, and then father died and I blamed you more. And I am so sorry. I don't blame you anymore." Kakashi replied, and that is when he heard faint crying coming from his left. He turned quickly and there sat Kaeru, soaked and crying.

"Oh Kaeru..." Kakashi muttered quietly as he walked over to his brother and crouched down beside of him. "You're soaked."

"So are you." Kaeru replied quietly, and Kakashi placed his hand on his brother, picking Kaeru up in his arms.

"And you're freezing." Kakashi said, before he got them home in the quickest way he could, teleportation.

| × | × | × | × | × |

Kakashi got Kaeru cleaned up and into warm clothes once they were home, and wrapped a couple of blankets around the boys shoulders. Kaeru was warming back up, but still not talking to Kakashi.

"Kaeru, please talk to me. I'm sorry, okay?" Kakashi said as he sat down beside of Kaeru. "I know it wasn't Obito's fault. I was just mad and upset with myself because I was the one who let you down all those years. And I'm sorry."

"Are you really sorry, Aniki?" Kaeru asked, giving him a meaningful look, and Kakashi nodded.

"I really am, Kaeru. I'm so so sorry." He said, and the smaller Hatake nodded his head slightly.

"Okay Aniki." He said. "I forgive you this time. But only because Obito is mad at you and I don't want him to be mad at you." Kaeru said, and Kakashi smiled.

"Thanks Kaeru. I appreciate it."

| × | × | × | × | × |

Obito walked through the busy streets of Konoha, ignoring everyone's stares and whispers at his appearance. Some people from his clan recognized him, but they said nothing and turned away instead.

Not that he cares. Obito merely scoffed, and not even stopping for shelter when the rain began to fall. He soon reached his destination, the Konoha's Orphanage, and knocked on the door.

Soon, someone answered. A middle-aged woman opened the door, looking at him with a questioning look. She smiled at him, stepping aside to allow him to enter. The smile never falter, while Obito walked in, looking around.

"How can I help you?" The woman sweetly asked.

Obito huffed at her attitude. Seems like even after two deaths and scars on half of his face, he still got his clan's charm.

"Is there a boy here named Naruto?"

Much to his shock, her face turned into one of disgust. "Naruto? As in, Naruto Uzumaki? That little demon?"

The boy's last name confused him. But Obito merely nodded, following the woman as she walked further inside. She stopped in front of a small room, and slammed the door open.

Obito kept his calm façade, looking at the small boy in front of him. He looked no older than 2 years old, with blonde hair and whiskers on his cheeks. He really looks like Minato.

"Here. Naruto Uzumaki, 2 years old." The woman snapped, glaring at the small boy. Obito crouched down, looking at Naruto's bright blue eyes. He could see a very familiar glint in them, very similar to Kaeru a few years ago. Fear, distrust, pain, lots of them.

"I want to adopt him."

The woman gave him an incredulous look. "Seriously? You want to take this monster away from here?!"

At her words, Obito glared, activating his Sharingan. When his right eye turned red, the woman flinched.

"He's no monster. Now just hurry and take care of the paperworks."

The woman ran out, and Obito let out a sigh, deactivating his kekkei genkai. He turned at the boy, who hasn't say a single word to him. Obito offered his hand, smiling at the Uzumaki.

"Hello, Naruto. My name is Obito Uchiha, and from today on, I will take care of you."

"... Brother?"

Obito grinned. "Yep. I'm your new brother. Call me Obito."

A wide smile spread across Naruto's face. "Yay! Obito-nii-san, dattebayo!"

| × | × | × | × | × |

Obito shook his head, bowing slightly. "It's alright, Fugaku-sama. I'm planning to live in an apartment instead. Besides, in the clan's records I am dead, so I don't think I should stay here. I also will have to take care of Naruto."

"Naruto? As in, Naruto Uzumaki? Minato's son?"

"Yep. He fell asleep on my way here." Obito replied, motioning over the sleeping boy on his back. Mikoto abruptly stood up, and went to his side, cooing over the blonde boy.

"I see. If you need anything for him, you can just tell us."

"Okay! Don't worry, I already got a job. Lord Hokage appointed me to be a sensei for Kakashi's brother."

"Kaeru? Then that means you're also Shisui's sensei, right?"

"Uh... yes..."

Fugaku turned, and started walking away. "We'll see if you're worthy. Follow me."

"Eh?! But Fugaku-sama-..."

"Hurry."

"H-Hai!" Obito exclaimed, leaving Naruto with Mikoto as he quickly followed the head of his clan.

For a test, definitely. And everyone knows how strict Fugaku Uchiha is.

Obito cringed slightly. He knows he will pass, that is a fact. Just...

So many things happened in a day.

| × | × | × | × | × |

The next day, Obito stood with Kaeru and Shisui on the training ground. The older Uchiha scratched the back of his head awkward, smiling at the boys.

"I don't really know what to do." Obito said, and Kaeru raised an eyebrow at him slightly. "Should we do squad introductions?"

"Why?" Kaeru said, tilting his head. "I already know that I'm Kaeru, you're Obito, and he's Shisui!"

"Yeah, but we don't know each other's strengths and weaknesses. That's how we make a well balanced team." Obito said, trying to recall all of the things he heard Minato tell them when Obito was a few years younger.

"Okay! You start!!" Kaeru said happily as he sat down on the ground, crossing his legs. His attitude had changed completely from when Kakashi and him had gotten into it, and Obito was the reason. When he was around Obito, he knew someone cared at least a little bit.

"My name is Obito Uchiha, and I'm 16 years old. My strength include my one Sharingan eye, and fire type jutsus. My weaknesses include my teammates and the ability to use swords. Shisui, you're next!"

"Yosh! My name is Shisui Uchiha! I'm 13 years old, and my strengths are also fire style and Sharingan, but I also have a wind release. My weaknesses, I honestly don't know."

"Alright, and now Kaeru."

"Yes, Sensei! My name is Kaeru Hatake, and I'm 13 years old! I don't know my strengths or weaknesses because I've been gone and haven't learned much!!"

"Well, at least we know some about each other now. It's better than being a team that doesn't know anything." Obito said, nodding his head before he reached into his pocket, and pulled out a single silver bell.

"This is something my Sensei did to my team, it's called the bell test. The only difference between the two exams will be the number of bells. The point of this exercise is to get this bell." Obito said, shaking the bell slightly so it would ding. "Away from me, using whatever forces you feel you need. If you don't get a bell, you won't pass, and you won't be a shinobi."

"Do we... do we work together?" Kaeru said, tilting his head slightly.

"Why do you ask that?" Obito said with a large grin.

"Because... there's two of us and only one bell." Kaeru said, glancing back and forth between Shisui and Obito. Both of the Uchiha's had smiles on her face, but for two separate reasons.

Shisui, because Kaeru was going to be a very useful team member, he was able to analyze things quickly, even with minimum ninja training.

Obito was smiling, because he could see Kaeru growing. He could see Kaeru becoming something he could be proud of, and someone who could be a great shinobi even if he had little to no training. The young Hatake was no longer in his crazy mental state, and he seemed more human now then he did then. And that, that made Obito happy.

"Well, you can do whatever you want." Obito stated, "If you don't get a bell, you won't pass. That's all."

"Whatever I want." Kaeru repeated. Obito gave him a confirming nod, Kaeru and Shisui hummed in reply.

Obito grinned, clasping his hands together. "What are you waiting for? 3, 2, 1, Start!"

In a blink, his students disappeared.

Now this one made Obito curious. He knew that Shisui might have already learned teleportation jutsu and such, hell, his uncle is the head of the clan! But Kaeru? This is Shinobi World. Just how far can that little Hatake go? Obito hardly ever goes to missions with Kaeru in Earth, but he had heard the stories. Before that accident, people always praised that young Hatake.

Everyone said that Kaeru was a crazy fighter. He could ran very fast, his footsteps are very light, silent, he didn't make any unnecessary sound, not once did his breathing ever got out of control, always calm and relaxed. Not a single sign of fear facing the enemy, despite his age. His attacks are always so sudden, taking full advantage of the element of surprise. His reflexes are one of the best, also his agility, instinct, and most of all, how he could take wise actions even in pressuring situations. What they like the most, is his skills with knifes, blades, daggers. He used them so effectively, whether during hand-in-hand combat or long-range fights. He could swung the blades around like they're parts of his body, or throw them with a perfect accuracy.

Thinking about it sent shivers down Obito's spine. Let's not talk about chakra first here. Kaeru had two kunai pouches on him, both still full of the blades. Fresh, new blades.

Maybe he shouldn't have use the phrase 'Whatever you want' to his students.

Obito activated his Sharingan, looking around. He could see two chakra presence, so close as if they were talking. One of them slowly faded and disappeared, and soon the other one, the weaker one, followed. He mentally groaned. Why does Shisui has to teach Kaeru how to hide his chakra presence? If he focused enough, Obito could sense Shisui's, but Kaeru's chakra is much more weaker.

Suddenly, a kunai was thrown towards him. Obito immediately took a step aside, barely avoiding the blade, but then fire shot from behind him. Using his Kamui, he sent the fire balls away, dodging it easily.

'Take that, Fugaku-sama,' he bragged mentally, 'Training my Sharingan in Earth is hard as f*ck, but believe me when I said that it's totally worth it. I mastered Kamui, freaking Kamui!'

"Okay, that's it!!" A voice yelled. Obito turned, seeing Shisui standing in the middle of the clearing, not even bothering to hide. He had his hands clutching his hair in frustration, and when their eyes met, Shisui immediately pointed an accusing finger at the older Uchiha, "I will definitely pass this test!! And I'm gonna get you to teach me that jutsu!!"

Obito cringed. No, he would prefer if his student doesn't have to experience that pain, which awakened his Mangekyō. The price was too much.

"ALRIGHT!! Comrade, ATTACK!!!"

Obito's jaws fell agape. What is it this time? Why does it feel like they're playing ninja? With their speeches, are they really taking this seriously?

"Hey, are you-..."

"WOOHOO!!!!" A voice yelled, as a figure jumped down from the tree above him, landing in front of him. It was Kaeru, grinning widely while holding a kunai in each hand, "Okay, so let's start this game! One point for each hit, two points if you yell or scream, three points if you fell down! Just like usual! Ready or not, here I come!"

His eyes widened, and he started cussing his luck in his head. Kaeru smirked at his shocked expression, raising his kunais. He swung his kunai, scratching Obito's arm slightly, "One!" He yelled, while raising his other kunai, and continued attacking. Another scratch on his torso, his leg, and his stomach, "Four!" And he kept on counting, a few giggles following his words, "Seven! Ten! Thirteen! Sixteen! Nineteen! Twenty-two-..."

Obito flinched. Maybe just scratches. But if this keep going on, things might got worse. Kaeru had that crazy psychotic look in his eyes again, he noted. The scratches maybe won't harm shinobis, but if Kaeru really can do this much, he might just be able to combine it with poison and such.

Now, this is talent. The speed is amazing. Give it more training and it might just be perfect. Just one problem: sanity control.

"Kaeru!" The boy didn't hear him. The attack continued, and Obito turned towards Shisui, to see the younger Uchiha staring in shock at his teammate's vicious attack.

"...-Forty-nine! Fifty-Two! Fifty-five-..."

"Shisui, I need your help here!" The yell made the teen snapped himself out of his daze. Shisui immediately teleported to behind Kaeru, grabbing the smaller boy's arms and tried to stop him.

"Kaeru! Oi, Kaeru, snap out of it!"

Kaeru suddenly froze, narrowing his eyes at Obito, who was still in front of him. "Seventy points. Just seventy points. No, I need more. I don't want another punishment. I need more, more, MORE!!"

With that last yell, he threw both his kunais, aiming for his sensei. But Obito, already calm and collected, simply used his Kamui to avoid the blades. He put his hands on Kaeru's shoulders, his gaze softened as he saw the tiny bits of fear in Kaeru's eyes.

"Kaeru, it's alright. Calm down. It's over, you did a great job. You can relax now."

His tensed body were put to ease, and when Shisui released him, he stumbled, and slowly sat on the ground, closing his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose. He took some deep breaths, before finally opening his eyes and looked up.

The two Uchihas sighed in relief. Kaeru's eyes widened as he saw the state Obito was in, and he cringed, clenching his fists.

"F*ck, no. No, not again. Damnit, I'm just so useless. I keep losing control. F*cking idiot!"

"Kaeru, it's fine. I'm alright."

"Nothing's fine!!" He yelled back, much to their shock, "I thought I already changed! But I hurt you, Obito! I hurt you! What if bad things happened to you?!"

"Isn't that what we're supposed to do?" Shisui asked, "We have to attack him, right? You did that, just like what you have to. There's nothing's wrong with that."

"But-..."

"Kaeru, Obito-sensei said it's alright. You need to trust him. Besides, you should stop worrying because we still have a more important topic."

"You mean the test?" Kaeru asked. Shisui nodded, and the two of them turned to look at Obito.

"You pass." Obito stated, "Both of you pass."

The two boys gaped at their new Sensei.

"Don't worry about it. That's what shinobis do. We have to hurt people to protect others. You already understand half of it."

"...Eh...?"

"Shisui, you know how to use your skill, but you often hesitated to attack. We need to improve that." Obito explained, "While you, Kaeru, are the opposite. You don't hesitate, and that's good, not many people can be like that. But you need to learn how to control yourself. And I'll help you."

"Okay, so repeat that. Do we pass?"

Obito nodded. "Yes. Team 12 will start training officially tomorrow, at 7 in this exact place. You got it?"

"YES!!!"

4656 words, take that!!

The wait must be worth it, right? I'm sure of it, don't question me. It's a double update too.

Anyways, what do you think? A chapter full of tension *grin* I really enjoy writing the argument between Kakashi and Obito. I know everyone (including me) loves Kakashi, but that's getting boring.

I don't know what else to write, except that I ship Kaeru with someone, any guess?

Tell us your opinion about this chapter. Don't forget to vote, because Kaeru seemed to like stars, lots of them!

See ya!
