SUMMER O'MALLEY was just a little girl, only about 9, living in sunny California. That was until her family went completely broke and had to pack up and make their way across the country to the beautiful state of North Carolina, more specifically the Outer Banks. It was cheaper, hotter, and wetter than California which made Summer dislike it the moment she stepped foot onto the swampy land. Everything was good for the first couple of years. The three O'Malley kids started school. Summer even got her own two side kicks, JJ Maybank and John Booker Routledge, two rowdy boys raised on The Cut. Her older siblings were never close with her, Serena preferred playing dress up as a Kook and Sam immersed himself in his studies. Neither wanted to get involved in Summers troublemaking. Everything was fine. That was until middle school hit. Her parents fought, a lot, it wasn't an uncommon occurrence. Until one day Summer walked into the small family home to nothing but emptiness. The crappy sofa and broken TV in the same spot but everything she knew that made the house a home had vanished. Gone were the polaroids and pictures lining the walls, the crappy family heirlooms that decorated the shelves. Sam's room was empty, no trace of the preteen boy to be found. Not even a single thing of Serena's left on her side of the bed. Then... Summer began to cry. Turns out her mother had found someone new, someone rich who lived in the Figure 8. That was when she vowed to never be like the Kook's. To never fall for their trickery or money or anything else. John B and JJ were her brothers now, to replace the siblings she lost.
