CHAPTER 7: THE SECRET

That night, Matt was trying hard to forget that incident on the balcony with Victoria, but he was helpless. Neither was he able to forget any word of what she said, nor was he able to sleep. He rushed for his phone and called Nina. The first time, she didn't pick up his call, and she picked up late the second time.

"Hey Matt!" She replied.

"Hey! What are you doing?"

"It's half past two, I guess. What am I supposed to do?" She answered in a sleepy voice.

"Yeah. I'm silly." He chuckled, paused, and said, "Nina, we love each other."

"Yes, we do."

"We know all about each other."

"Yes, we do."

He hesitated a bit before saying anymore, but at last he did. "A...Are you hiding something from me?"

Nina jumped and sat erect on her bed, breathing fast and her eyes wide open. Her hand, which held the phone, started trembling. Then Matt replied with a laugh, "Oh! What am I saying? Why on earth would you conceal anything from me? Okay, now I can sleep better. Good-night, dear."

"Good-night." It was the only thing she was able to say, and he hung up. The phone slipped from her hand. The sleep was far from her reach then. She stared at the moon all night, pondering whether she should or should not.

The auspicious day had come. The church was marvelously decorated. Everyone from both families was gathered there. The movers and shakers of Ravelston created a big stir. The cathedral was embellished with fragrant white flowers and soft, glowing candles, which created an ethereal atmosphere for the elegant Christian wedding. There were whispers of excitement about the union. The pews were full of well-groomed visitors, wearing a combination of high fashion and tradition. With her veil falling softly behind her, the bride, resplendent in a flowing white gown with elaborate lace accents, walked down the aisle with elegance. With a look of intense adoration, the groom, who was tall and dressed sharply in black, stood at the altar and watched her approach. Their voices reverberated across the opulent cathedral as they exchanged vows, blending with the distant sound of a choir chanting hymns. The ceremony, which launched their new life together, was the ideal balance of joy and solemnity. The marriage ceremony of Matt and Nina was considered a hallmark in Barrels' and Clarks' history. The event came to an end after a delicious dinner. During that evening, everyone was ecstatic, and Matt was the most excited, but Nina was hiding something behind her smile. Victoria was also there, looking enviously at the couple.

In prison, Brandon met Raymond another day while having dinner. "I'm ready." Bran said.

"Are you sure?"

Brandon nodded.

Raymond summoned his pet cop and asked him to meet Brandon. He explained everything to the policeman. The plan was all about Bran's history and how he would escape from the prison. "From now onwards, you will also obey this man. He is Brandon." The cop glanced at Bran and nodded. Raymond signaled for him to leave. "Get ready! You are about to leave this hell within a week and remember what you have promised." Raymond said.

"If breaking out of here is so easy for you, then why have you never gotten out and executed it yourself?" Bran asked.

Raymond thought for a while. "Bran, you know the first thing that happened to me after coming to this prison was that I met you. Then I found out we both have grudges against the same person. So I came up with this plan. I want to be the mind behind it, and I want you to be the strength behind it. I could not think of any other better options. Got your answer?"

Brand nodded slowly.

Weeks passed, and Nina had no problem with her new family. The Barrels treated her like their own daughter. Matt was the most adorable guy she had ever met. She felt miserable whenever she thought about what she was doing to them. She even wept sometimes and prayed that she could not take that burden anymore. She could never live there peacefully with that. She also knew that it was quite late. Then the marriage was done. She was more scared of that if someone else would tell the Barrels about it. She thought about Victoria, and after that thought, she was well aware of her character. That would be the most devastating situation. She gathered courage anyhow, and a second later she sighed, "I can't." It was becoming an impossible task in her life. She also knew very well that the secret she had, once revealed, could shatter their entire family.
