CHAPTER 34: D-DAY
The next day, every member had reached their assigned locations. Oswald called Dan with an untraceable number. He had also changed his voice to avoid recognition. Dan picked up after two rings. Oswald gave him the details about where he had to bring money. He also told him to bring the money in a brown, water-proof suitcase. The police were with Dan. They tried to get the location but were helpless. Dan agreed. The line was disconnected.
"Are you sure we have to take the money?" Dan confirmed this with the commissioner.
"Haven't you heard? First, we have to show them that we have brought the amount. Don't worry, sir. It will act as our bait to catch those guys. I assure you that not a single bill will be missing from the bag. You only need to trust us." The commissioner was thinking more about his deal of five million dollars he made with Dan in return for the success of their mission. Dan was not looking forward to participating in that, but the commissioner assured him that he would prioritize that case with his entire squad involved in it and would get back Nina and the money safely before the day ended. Dan had no choice but to agree with that.
Dan nodded. The commissioner gathered the policemen and got inside the car along with Dan. They left for the Queensferry Crossing Bridge.
* * *
The bridge was filled with cops, and the barricading was also done. The cops had also covered the bank of the river. Dan reached there along with the commissioner. They were waiting for the kidnapper's call, and he called. Dan picked it up.
"Did you bring the suitcase?" Oswald asked.
"Yes."
"Open it and hold it up in the air."
Dan was confused. He told the commissioner and did what the kidnapper had ordered him to do. Soon, they saw a drone coming towards them. It was fitted with a camera. It approached the suitcase and zoomed in. Oswald approved that it was full of cash. Then, the drone went up in the air. "What's going on?" Dan inquired.
"I don't know. I think they just checked whether we had brought money or not." The commissioner replied.
"Officer, are you sure that this money will be safe?"
"Don't worry, sir. We are only using it to get Nina back. I've already assured you."
BANG!
A loud explosion took place in the sky. It was the drone that the gang had destroyed. Its pieces fell into the river. Dan was panting from that explosion, as was everyone else. Then he again received a call from Oswald.
"Throw the suitcase in the river, right now."
He stared at the commissioner after hearing those words. He told it to him, and the commissioner asked him to do the same. "Are you sure, sir?" Dan wondered, holding the suitcase even tighter.
"We have no other choice. We have to follow what the kidnapper says. We want your trust, Sir Dan."
He nodded and threw the suitcase with all his force. It sank as it touched the water. The snipers held their rifles and scoped in, aiming at the water surface.
"What is the situation?" The commissioner demanded.
"No movement at all, sir." One of the snipers replied.
"Stay alert!"
"Copy that."
There was no disturbance at all under the water surface for a few moments.
"Sir!" A sniper called out. "There is movement under the water surface where the suitcase is dropped. Do you copy?"
"Copied." The commissioner said he grabbed the binoculars and looked at the spot where the suitcase was thrown. The bubbles began to rise from there. "There's someone in the river. He will get out. Shoot at first sight. I repeat, shoot at first sight. Do you copy?"
"Copied."
Dan was sweating by that time. He wiped his face with a handkerchief. At that moment, a man came out of the water. He inhaled and then got in again very quickly. "Shoot him, God damn it!" The commissioner shouted. The target was missed. The sniper held his rifle tightly, waiting for any other movement. That time, he could not miss it. The gang member swam towards the bank of the river while underwater. A few moments later, he came out again and...
The water turned red around him. "The target is down." The sniper reported. The body floated on water for some time and then drowned. It was a dummy whose head was using a ball made up of plaster and filled with red fluid. The commissioner told Dan, "I told you. Your money is safe." He kept his binoculars down and was about to leave when the sniper said, "Sir, there is some sort of movement again under the water surface."
"What?" The commissioner was appalled and grabbed the binoculars again. A man came up to the water surface, holding the suitcase.
"Should I shoot him?" The sniper murmured. Before the commissioner could answer anything, another sniper spotlighted, "Sir, there is some moment seen at another spot too."
"What the hell?" The commissioner mouthed and removed the binoculars, as the scene he was witnessing could be seen with the naked eye.
There were seventy to eighty members of the gang floating in the river, with each and every person holding a brown suitcase. It was a scenario that completely blew everyone's mind. Dan turned to the commissioner, who was horrified to see a number of suitcases.
"Sir, should I shoot?"
"No! Hold your fire. I repeat, hold your fire." The commissioner urged.
"What are you doing? We are going to lose the money." Dan forewarned.
"Sir, I have to follow the protocols. I cannot order to open fire. It can lead to a massacre. You have to trust us. We will save your money, and then Nina." He turned and ordered the cops to take positions on the bank, check each and every suitcase, and arrest each and every person who came out. That was the first phase of distraction.
"Switch to the second phase of distraction." Oswald briefed, and the remaining gang members went to work.
While the policemen were busy catching each guy and checking the suitcases, they saw some smoke bombs landing on the site. A stampede was created there. Dan went tense again. "Don't worry, sir. There is no way out for them." The commissioner confronted him.
Then it was time for the last phase of distraction.
The cops were busy catching the team members in the mist of smoke when a van entered the bridge by blowing all the barricades. The policemen turned to it and aimed their rifles at the tires. That vehicle was not going to stop. The commissioner looked at that scene. "What is this now?"
Oswald gave a signal to a gang member's earpiece. That gang member was that swimmer. He was under water all the time, breathing with an oxygen tank. He received the signal and knew that it was time to escape. By then, there had been enough diversion. He swam underwater along the river with the suitcase filled with money. The smoke had filled the atmosphere, the cops were busy subduing the chaos created by the gang members, and then the last distraction happened that took everyone's attention.
Oswald was praying all the time. That part was more dangerous for them than the police. The commissioner reached there. They had all coked out their guns. The next moment, the killer dragged out Nina, clutched his arm around her neck, and placed a pistol at the back of her neck.
"It's Nina! I have eyes on the kidnapper. I want all the units here. Surround him from all sides." The commissioner communicated through his walkie-talkie. In no time, that man was surrounded from all directions. Even the snipers turned their scopes at him.
Their gang member with the suitcase had ventured too far till then. He reached the river bank. No one was present there. He removed the oxygen mask and headed for the road. A van was parked there. He sent a message to Oswald saying that the heist was successful and he was about to reach the planned location. Oswald quickly transferred that message to the killer and asked him to use the smoke, get back in the van, and drive away, but he had some other plans.
The police were demanding that he lower his gun, but he wasn't listening at all. Nina was standing in his grip. She looked nervous. It was all part of the plan. The commissioner doubted the sniper. "Can you get his head?"
"I can't, sir. He is moving a lot, and he has put the lady before him."
"Damn it!"
The commissioner turned to the killer and asked him to surrender and let the lady go, or by the countdown of ten, he would be shot down. Nina was also surprised that the killer was not leaving that place. The commissioner began the countdown.
"Did you receive the message from Oswald?" She asked.
"Yes, I did." The killer reacted imperturbably.
"Then we must leave now. Use the smoke bombs!" She whispered. The killer laughed. She was getting tense as well as afraid. The media was telecasting the live scenario. Oswald looked at the television. He was unable to make up for what was happening on the bridge. 'Why aren't they escaping?' He was getting mad. 'They'll ruin the whole damn plan.'
"Why are you laughing? We have no time. Just stick to the plan and run." She muttered angrily.
"There is no plan for me, bitch." He pressed the pistol harder against the back of her neck. She lost her breath.
"What are you doing?" She demanded fear.
"The same you did to Kate, bitch."
Nina wanted to scream, but he had covered her mouth. "You made a mistake, the worst mistake of your life, due to which you are going to lose your life."
The count reached eight. "Game over." He said that and shot her in the back. He kept on pressing the trigger. At that moment, the commissioner ordered them to open fire on him. The killer was full of holes. The sniper drove a bullet into his skull, which came out from the other side. The cops rushed to the bodies. Oswald fell on the chair after seeing the live broadcast on television. He informed the swimmer thief that the incident happened on the bridge.
"What are you saying?" He argued.
"You just stick to the plan, reach where I told you to, and I'll handle the rest." Oswald requisitioned him to listen to his orders and hung up. Then he told something to the gang members around him, and they all left. Only Oswald stayed there, staring at the television screen.
'Nina is dead. Nina's dead.' That thief was chanting while driving the van. He looked at the suitcase beside him and greed took over. Having removed the earpiece, he threw it on the road. He took another turn, which was completely opposite from the planned one. 'Now, all the cash will be mine!' He laughed and scooted.
