CHAPTER 32: ONE LAST BUSINESS
The Clarks' house was filled with cops by then. Lara summoned them. Some cops were taking samples of the poisoned wine, some were taking pictures of the dead body, and others were searching for evidence in that room. A cop inquired about her.
"Where were you when all this happened?"
"I was in my room." She answered confidently.
"Were you sleeping?"
"No, as I just got into bed."
"How did you find out that something wrong happened here?"
"I heard the sound of glass shattering." She pointed at the glass pieces. That was the last thing she did to make it a crime scene. The cop went to the commissioner, who was staring at the wall. The message was written on the wall with black paint.
'If you want her alive, send fifty million dollars or we will send you her body.'
"Sir, it's sure that she has been kidnapped."
"Yeah. It seems like we have a big job to do." The commissioner said this while looking at the broken wheelchair.

Oswald took Nina to a small clinic, as it was the only place they could go. For the rest of the world, Nina had been abducted. They couldn't go to the hospital as it was very risky. She had to cut herself off from the rest of the world. They entered the dispensary. It was a very congested place, filled with medicines.
"Hello! Is anybody here?" Oswald asked. He was helping Nina to walk. She stopped shivering but was filled with wounds. An elderly woman appeared before them. She was a Muslim woman dressed modestly, with a simple hijab framing her face beautifully. She dressed simply and pragmatically, emphasizing her devotion to her job at a tiny clinic over any desire for ostentatious wealth. Her gentle and caring manner was evident despite the modest circumstances. Even though she occasionally displayed a trace of nervousness, her eyes were warm and compassionate when she cared for her patients.
"She needs help," Oswald said while holding her.
"Why do you come here? There is a hospital at some distance." She asked because they seemed well off and her clinic was sporadically encountered by any patient.
"We didn't have time. Can you clean her wounds now?"
"Yeah, I can. I'm a doctor, by the way."
"Why are you practicing in such a small dispensary? Why not in a hospital?"
She sighed. "Long story."
She asked Nina to lie on the bed. The doctor quickly grabbed some cotton and serums. Nina glanced at her for the first time. Her eyes grew bigger and bigger. She thought she had seen that woman somewhere, and she tried to recall her. At last, she did. She quickly jumped off the bed and rushed to Oswald. "What happened, Nina?"
She was afraid and filled with anger. She said, pointing at her, "She... she is a killer."
Oswald was shocked.
"She killed my baby in the hospital when it was born."
Oswald understood what she was saying. He quickly grabbed a scalpel and lunged at her. "You! You have no feelings, devil!"
"I'm sorry, what are you saying?" The doctor looked baffled and crouched.
"Look at her! Tell me you didn't kill her baby."
She looked at Nina. She was horrified to see her again. Oswald asked her again. "Yeah! I know her. She had given me money to kill that infant." She answered painfully.
"I'm going to kill you!" Oswald shouted and was about to stab her when she blurted out. "I hadn't killed her!" She closed her eyes after saying that. Oswald stopped in the air, staring at her.
"I didn't kill her." She whispered it again. "That woman didn't have any heart, but I do. Yes, I conducted the tubectomy, but I took the baby away from you and kept her safe all these years."
"The baby was a girl? Is she still alive?" Nina asked in amazement. The doctor nodded slowly. "Tell me one thing. Why are you here? You worked in the hospital." Oswald asked.
"I had to leave that hell. I opened my small clinic here." She paused and said, "Can I start dressing the wound now? It's getting worse." Nina allowed.
The doctor continued, "I had to do that work because it was the matter of my life, my child's life, and also the life of your offspring." They were both listening to her unblinkingly. She continued, "My name is Dua, and I'm from Palestine. Then, I was in Gaza when that brutal nation was crumbling us down. Our land was Israeled, and so were our rights. I had received my medical degree and was pregnant, and my husband and my entire family were excessively supportive of my decision to practice my career. But in a blink, everything disappeared. They barged into my home and shot him, my parents, and my in-laws. I was screaming at one corner when an Israeli soldier approached and crouched. He said, 'I've always heard that such beauty is found in heaven. I never imagined I'd discover one here, in the crumbles.' He said this as he traced his bloody finger on my face. 'I'm going to keep her.' They kept me as a hostage. He used to come and check on me after killing thousands of people every day. I asked him once why he even saved me. He did it because I was pregnant. He said that his wife and son were killed on October 6. He saw me with revengeful eyes, and he would train my blood to be like him and make the child someone he lost. Having said that, he kicked a bowl of water toward me and said, 'Keep him hydrated. If he comes out with even a petty flaw, I am not going to spare you.'
'Why are you saying Him?' I was getting worried.
'It is either a boy or abortion.' He laughed and left the chamber.
Months later, a boy was born. He was perfectly healthy. After that, he threw me away. I was kept isolated in the bunker. Not given food, water, or even medicines for so long. The boy grew older. I didn't even get a chance to see him properly." She broke into tears while putting on a bandage on the wound. Nina's eyes also went moist, and Oswald was looking down all the time.
She continued, "Sometime later, when the kid was gradually becoming weaker and required his mother's care and feeding, he took me with him to look after the boy. I was only allowed to see him for a few hours of the day. One night, when he was trying to hurt me, I saw my son carrying his pistol. I screamed at that sight, but that devilish man reacted to it calmly. He went there and took the pistol from his hand.
'No worries, boy, I will keep it in your hands very soon.' He soothed him.
'He has just started walking!' I said it with my teeth and fists clenched.
'So what? The sooner, the better.'
Things were going out of hand, and I never wanted my son to turn out to be him. I thought of various possibilities to save him. During the day, that Israeli soldier murdered infants, and at night, sometimes he used to rape me or open some random video calling site and boast his kill counts proudly. I couldn't imagine my son like that. I got to know that he had a plan to brainwash my son and make him butcher me. Lastly, he would make him a war machine like those soldiers and make him kill our own countrymen. He had planned all that to gratify his vengeance for the death of his family. But when their government got to know about this, they asked to kill all the hostages, because of which he could not put his plan into action. His desire for vengeance overcame him to the point where he made the decision to leave. He also wanted to show his nation that whatever he was planning to commit would bring glory to them. A dozen of those Israeli men supported him in this and decided to leave with him. Later, he made some relations with Gordon Grey, a mafia member who held some shares in providing funds for the Israeli army." Nina had heard his name earlier, from Bran, and she knew who that person was, but she let Dua say it without interfering.
"He migrated us here, and I started working as a doctor here. He wanted money, so I had to earn and hand over every pound to him, or he would kill my..." She sniffed and continued, "I still needed my son to be away from him at any cost. Then you happened. I received a call from a lady. She told me to kill your baby and conduct a tubectomy on you. I only performed that surgery on you because that man would have killed my son and me if you had bored another child. That lady offered me an amount for that, but I refused. She searched for more information about me, and ultimately she contacted that murderer in army uniform. She offered him a great share, and he agreed at once." She looked at Nina. "Not the first time, he was trying to kill an infant. He persuaded me to commit that crime. Otherwise, he would kill me, my son, and your child himself, as he had already taken the money. I had no other choice. That moment, I decided to run away as early as possible. When your baby was born, I kept it hidden from everyone and then took her with me to a small place that I had rented lately. The next day, that man asked me for proof, so I showed him the body of a baby boy from the morgue room who couldn't survive due to his low birth weight. The following night, when he was heavily drunk and asleep, I saw an opportunity to hand over both the kids to a child care organization situated far from here. I couldn't keep them with me. It was too risky. If he ever found out about this place or one that I have rented, he would target the kid first. I am just trying here to earn as much as I can so that I can give those kids a better life." She burst into tears. Oswald was still looking down. Teardrops were falling from his eyes. Dua turned to Nina and said, "I visit them once a month. She has perfect eyes. Just like you and her smile, it feels like a subtle grin." That moment, Nina burst into tears and hugged her tightly. She felt both thankful and sorry for her.
"Can I see her, my daughter?" Nina asked while wiping off her tears.
Dua nodded with tearful eyes.
"I promise you, once I'm done with all this mess, I'm taking you with me to a better place, and your son too. You will never have to think about your past." She paused. "You are an angel. You were ordered to kill her, yet you saved her."
"I'm a mother too. I couldn't even dream of that thing." She finished cleaning the wounds and applied band-aids. Nina came out. Oswald was happy for her. "So, when are you planning to meet your daughter?" He asked. Her smile faded. "Not now." She replied and left. He was shocked. He gathered her belongings, like a shawl and the phone. Just then, the phone chimed. Oswald read it. It was a message from Lara. 'The police have left. They are up to find you and your imaginary kidnapper. Make it quick.' He rushed out to her. Oswald became suspicious of Nina. He thought that she was using him and would tag him as her kidnapper in-front of the police. He grabbed her and asked, with the phone before her eyes, "What is this? What the hell are you planning? Are you about to betray me?"
"What? No, of course not. Actually, I was going to tell you about that, and it's not something that I'm going to do. It's something that I've already done."
"What thing?"
"I'll tell you everything, but we need a place to hide. The police are after me."
"The police? How did they reach Clark's home? Who leaked the news?"
"Don't worry, Oswald. It's just the beginning."
"The beginning of what?"
"The heist."
