CHAPTER 24: CHANGE OF PLANS

The next day, Sir Oswald was standing in the graveyard, before his wife's grave. He brought the same flowers he had brought two weeks ago. He laid the bouquet beside her epitaph and prayed for her peace. He closed his eyes and was reminded of that incident, which happened two weeks ago at the same place where he was standing right then.

He didn't bring any flowers, then. He was on his knees and weeping terribly. "Oh no, Susan. No, I don't think I can save our child." He was talking to his wife's grave. A small grave was dug beside his wife's grave that was meant for his daughter, Nancy. That little pearl was hospitalized. She was going through lung cancer. Oswald was unable to afford the high expenses of her treatment. He had asked Lynda for money he could borrow, but she refused as their businesses were not going well. Lynda always used to blame Oswald for any losses in their businesses. She was least concerned about what situation that old man was going through. He was crying on his wife's grave, talking to her. "I'm helpless, my love. I can't do anything for our child. She is coming to you very soon. I was unable to take good care of her. I hope you'll look after her much better than me."

Just then, he heard a call from behind. "Sir Oswald?" Podrick said. He turned and was unable to see the figure as his eyes were filled with tears. Podrick approached him. Nina was with him. "Who are you?" Oswald asked.

"We know about you. About that situation you are going through." Oswald looked at him with confusion. He switched his glance to Nina, who was sitting silently in the wheelchair.

"Why have you brought Lady Nina here?"

"To help you." Podrick replied placidly.

"What?"

"We know that Lady Lynda has turned her back on you. You have no money for your daughter's operation. We are ready to help you, but on one condition."

"What condition, and first of all, who are 'we'?" Podrick's words drifted him muddied.

"Me and Lady Nina."

"Stop fooling me! She knows nothing." He pointed at her.

"She knows... though a little bit, but she does. She knows Matt killed her son, Nick. I know that Lynda killed my love." Then Podrick told him the entire past of both families, which Oswald was unaware of.

"How can I trust you?" Oswald asked.

Podrick went to Nina and said, "Tell him, what happened to Nick?"

"Nick who?" She stared blankly at Podrick's face.

Podrick stayed quiet. "Your son, Nick." He said it in a whisper. He held her hands. She tried to think hard. "Nick...Nick...my son." She said this and gripped Podrick's wrists. The grip was getting tighter, and she began crying. "My son, Nick." She sobbed. "Matt killed him." Oswald couldn't believe the sight before his eyes. Podrick turned to him. "It took her ample time to know all this. She wants to give justice to her son. Do you know when she was reminded of her son? After a day, he died. It is God's destiny that He reminded her of all that. He will never do injustice to His children." Oswald had no words to say. He was staring at helpless Nina. Podrick continued, "I'm ready to help you if you help us."

"How can you help me?"

"We provide you with enough money so that your daughter can be cured as soon as possible. Lady Nina can understand the pain of a child. She had lost two kids of her own."

Oswald's eyes were filled with tears. "You can really save my Nancy!" He exclaimed. Podrick nodded.

"Look, I can do anything for my girl."

"I don't need to risk your life for that. We want revenge, and we want your help in that. Will you?"

"What kind of help?"

"You just need to put your eyes on Lynda. We only need to find a golden opportunity to kill her. You have to tell us every detail about her. Who she meets or talks to, especially Matt. He is also going to be killed." Podrick said.

"Don't worry. I'll do this with full loyalty. Helping with justice for an innocent child makes me happier than seeing my daughter cured."

"You'll get the money within an hour."

Oswald went to Nina. He kneeled before her, joined his hands, and said, "I can't say that you may remember me or not, but I can promise that I will never forget you." He started crying.

She asked slowly, "What's your name?"

"Oswald, my lady."

"I promise, I will never forget your name, Oswald." She assured him with a subtle grin.

Oswald drifted out of those thoughts of that meeting, opened his eyes, and saw Podrick coming towards him. "There is no way to escape. The police will get to you anyhow." Oswald warned him.

"I know." Podrick was looking at Oswald's wife's grave and placed a flower on it.

"I'm worried about Nina. How can you bring her into this trouble?"

"They will never reach her or me." Podrick reacted as he turned to Oswald.

"How?"

"I won't be alive till then. I would be enjoying myself with my Lily." He paused and beamed. "Now, there is only one person whom I have to kill, Matt. Did you have any news about him?"

"I'm afraid, not yet. Yesterday, he didn't call Lynda even once, and today I haven't checked the phone."

"Then do it. I have to get him before the police get me." Podrick left.

Oswald went back to the Barrels' home. He grabbed the wine bottle from the bar and drank some, his thoughts revolving around the same question. "Come on! Matt, where the hell are you?"

*  *  *

"Matt, here you are!" Victoria shouted. He was packing some stuff. His hands were moving terribly. "Matt, since last night, you have been acting like that. Can you tell me in detail what happened?"

"I have already told you, dear. I can't tell more than that." He was restless.

"And where are you leaving?"

"To the place I told you about last night." He was also getting annoyed.

Last night, when Matt escaped from that apartment, he came back to Victoria.

He dashed into the room and closed the door from behind. He was panting. "What happened, dear?" Victoria asked as she tried to control him.

"They found it. They found my secret place. I'm in deep trouble now."

"Matt, what the hell are you talking about?"

"Victoria, do you know, all these years, who was helping us with money and places to live? Even though our businesses paid me a small amount, a person did the majority of the work. It's a gangster from out of Edinburgh, Glasgow. He commits crimes using face masks and has asked me to keep them safe. In return, he would provide me with all the necessities, but I have ruined it all. The police have found that now. He will kill me. If I had not escaped from there, I would have been busted." The gangster assisting Matt was not the one who was involved with Brandon.

"I told you not to use your mind. You said that your plan was foolproof."

"It was! I just want everyone to believe that Dave killed Nick."

"By that stupid plan..." she vociferated.

"At least they don't know my name yet. If I had chosen to go with your plan, they would have gotten me. That was not an accident, as it looked in Nina's case. It was a cold-blooded murder! Thousands of people saw it, and if the cops had the information that Nick was onto something that was related to Nina's death, in no time they would be after me. So, I had to put all this on someone else, and that boy, Dave, was the only one who struck my mind. Right now, they are searching for a man who was using that account and killed Nick. They don't even have a trace that it was me. We are still on the safer side."

"How did you get Dave's account?"

"Oh, that gangster helped me with that. He has many connections."

"So, what are you going to do now?" Victoria was also getting agitated.

"First of all, I have to go out to Belfast and meet him. The main guy is there right now. There is no time to wait for him to come back. I need to visit him as early as possible and apologize to him. He is the only person who can get us out of this mess. I'll ask him to take us out of Edinburgh, and then we'll think about what to do next."

"Why don't you call him and ask? Is it necessary to go?"

"I have tried, but his number is invalid. He must have changed it again. He keeps doing it every time."

"Then I'll come with you."

"Are you crazy, Victoria? I'm not going on vacation. It's a very risky place, and I don't want someone to find you." He said it at the top of his voice.

"Then you want me to stay here, alone?" Her tone matched his.

"I know it's insane, but it is safest for you. Once I'm done with meeting him, he will arrange a new place for us, far from here, and we can create our paradise there. There would be no need to run away from anything anymore. Do you trust me?" He cupped her face in his hands.

Victoria stared at him, thinking about how she would put her plan to work in an anonymous location. Then she thought about the conversation she had with Kate. Finally, she thought, 'I won't let you down, mother.'

She looked into his eyes and whispered, "Always." He kissed her forehead, and she went to bed. Matt was sitting on the couch, engrossed in thoughts and fumbling with his phone.

He got a call from the gangster's man. "What the hell did you do?" The man shouted over the phone.

"I am terribly sorry. I just want your help to get out of all this." Matt begged.

"Help! Do you want us both killed?" He reacted to that dubious request.

Matt was crying over the phone. "I didn't do this voluntarily, and I'll do my best to make everything right." He sobbed. "Please help me."

"I'm sorry." The man sighed and disconnected the call. Matt threw the phone on the sofa and his head into his hands. He was repenting the fact that he didn't let Victoria plan this murder. If she did, the circumstances would be different, but not as bad as that.

*  *  *

Next morning...

Matt's phone chimed with a new message from one of the gangster's men, with whom he was talking the previous night when Lynda got killed. The message said, 'I am done with the consignment, received from the chief. I'll be leaving to his place day after tomorrow. So, here is the chance I could provide you to help yourself. You get to me as early as you can, and I'll lead you to his place. After that, I won't be knowing you at all, as I don't want to be into all this fuss you are right now. From then, you're on your own.' Matt thanked him a lot by messaging him back. Then his eyes fall on the unsent voice message for his mother that he forgot to send. That message to Lynda was really important for him, as it could be the key to letting him out of that dirty business he was trapped in. Without wasting a single minute, he pressed send. Matt was gathering the left-overs and was ready to leave.

"Victoria!" She was still sleeping. "I'm about to leave." She woke up and yawned. She went and hugged Matt from behind. "I'll miss you." She said.

"I'm going only for two days. I'll be back soon."

Just then, a message came on her phone. It was from Kate. She read it privately, and the phone slipped from her hands. She dashed to turn on the television. She stood, frozen by what she saw.

"Victoria..." Matt came out of the room. He saw the screen. They exchanged horrified looks. The news regarding Lynda's death went on fire. The camera was close to her dead body, with one of her fingers missing. The police claimed that she was tortured before her death. Matt's legs were trembling. He was unable to breathe. "This is not possible!" He said. The headlines were, 'Lynda Barrel found dead. Her body was hidden in the bushes in the garden. She was on her horse. It was a severe accident by a truck, and the truck driver is missing. She had undergone torment before she was killed. A pet dog found her body.' The policemen were asking Oswald about her death, but he had nothing to say. All he said was that Lynda rushed out late at night when Kate had left the house. She was very afraid and kept on chanting that someone was going to kill her. She left on her horse, and then that incident happened.

Matt was on the floor, staring in the air with a dazed expression. "Matt, what happened?" She reached out to him and asked. He didn't reply. "Matt, say something!" Victoria was getting impatient. He dashed to his phone and opened Lynda's inbox. There was someone on the other end who had already heard and read his voice message.

"Someone knows," Matt murmured.

"What?"

"Someone knows what we did. That person is after us. That's why he killed Mom."

"What are you saying? Why would anyone do that?" Victoria tossed so many questions at him.

Matt caught his breath and answered, "Because I met her many times, and that killer thought she might know where I lived. He thought she was hiding us. He tried to take my address from her. That's why the killer would have tortured her, and when he got no help from her, he killed her."

"Matt, this can't be true." She sputtered.

"It could be. I can't take a risk." He dithered. "Grab all the things you can within two minutes. You are leaving this place with me."
