CHAPTER 18: THE GHOST

Matt left the glass on the table and rushed out. Pablo met him at the gate. "Whoa man! Where are you rushing to?" He asked.

"Oh, nowhere. I just felt like vomiting after that drink."

"Oh, please, go on. If I see you throwing up here, I can't control myself from puking." Matt left. Pablo went to make another drink for himself.

Matt dashed out of the house. It was becoming arduous for him even to breathe. 'I was... I was spending my days with a ghost. How the hell is that possible?' He was thinking his entire way to heaven. 'Heaven! I don't know what kind of heaven I was dwelling in. In no time, it had turned into hell. I don't know what to do. I really don't know what to do. I literally slept with a ghost and kissed a ghost during these days. How can I face a ghost? How dare I? Should I run away? No, I should face it! I should know the truth and I will.' He never realized it when he reached his apartment building while he was running through his thoughts.

Having parked the car, he went into the lift. Those thoughts accompanied him there too. With every floor he passed, a new, more deadly thought struck his mind. His mind stopped when he reached the fifteenth floor. He reached his apartment, fumbled for the key, and was about to unlock the door. He retreated back to his hands. 'I can't! I can't!' He thought. 'The Clarks are not insane. What if she turned out to be a real ghost?' It was for sure that he was then a full-grown man. He was also ready to fight Bran, but the thought that he had spent days with a ghost gave him goosebumps. Not just spent, but also kissed and slept with it. No thought stood firm in his mind. He was pondering whether he should or should not. 'I have to. I have to find out the truth. I have not seen her yet, but what if today becomes the last day of my life when I see her?' He was driven crazy. He started tearing his hair apart. At last, when his mind was under control, he reached for the door and unlocked it.

It was completely dark inside. Matt fumbled for switches at the entrance. He found them and clicked them but nothing happened. They weren't working. He started getting goosebumps. Matt gulped with horror and moved further. He could've turned on the flashlight on his phone, but his phone was dead. He managed to walk by tracing the wall on his side. He passed the hall and reached the dining area. After focusing hard, he concluded a dim light source was coming from the bedroom. The area was hardly visible, yet he made it anyhow. He was around three feet away from his room. The room's door was open. He got inside and got the worst haunting shock of his life.

There, he saw a woman, all white, with her hair dangling down to her waist, burning the candles. She had gotten back at Matt. His nerves stopped helping him out. He kept staring at that figure. 'Victoria. They were right. I'm about to face a ghost.' Then his eyes went to the golf stick lying in a corner. Matt moved slowly towards it, grabbed it and moved towards her. She was eight feet away from him.

Seven feet, six feet, five feet, four feet, three feet...

"Aaaaaaaaah!" He shrieked as she turned back. He began attacking in the air with his stick while screaming. Victoria crouched down. "What the hell are you doing?" She screamed at him.

"Get away from me! I'm going to kill you, you ghost!" He was still swirling the stick in the air.

"Are you drunk?" Victoria asked in a befuddled tone.

Matt stopped after she said that. "I had never thought that ghosts talk like that."

"Shut up! What the hell are you talking about?" She went to him.

"No! Stay there! Stay away from me!" He said it with his golf stick pointed at her.

"Dear, what's wrong with you? Why are you behaving in such a way?"

Matt was breathing heavily. "Are you alive, Victoria?"

"What seems to you?" She got ballistic.

He was staring at her with a confused look. "Are you really alive?" Matt asked in an emphasizing tone, getting more confused by every second. Victoria shook her head in frustration. "I'm done with you, Matt! You're completely crazy." She was about to leave.

"No, please." He controlled his breath anyhow, threw the stick on the floor, and moved forward to touch her. 'You are real. You're not dead.' He thought as he traced his fingers on her cheek.

"Yes, I am alive." She said, "Now, what's wrong with you?"

"Why did they lie to me?" he asked himself.

"Who lied to you? Matt, what are you talking about?" She shook him and interrogated him. He kept on staring at her and said, "Your father and Pablo told me that you died in that car accident in which Nina died. Nina, Nina, yes, she is alive!"

Victoria was about to faint. "How's that possible? You threw her from that bridge."

"Yet she survived, and she is crippled and has lost her memory."

"What...what are you saying? I can't get a thing."

Matt narrated her the entire past and then said, "I think there is no need to kill her again. She is no better than a moving, dead body. She is not going to be a hurdle anymore in our lives."

She turned to him and asked, "So, my father told you about my death?"

"Yeah, I don't know why he did it. And Pablo also told me that same thing, which made me leave that place, and I came to you." She went pale.

"What on earth have you done?" She really screamed at him. The next words that came out of her mouth were, "Oh my God!"

"Victoria, what happened? What's wrong?"

"Matt, are you dumb or what? It was a bloody trap! They played you like a dog. Having dabbled your mind with such terrible things, they had their eyes on you. He insisted on you in such a way that you could end up rushing here, and he will follow you and find out about everything we've been hiding for years."

"You are overthinking, Victoria. Nothing like that is going to happen."

"How are you sure?"

"I mean, I was cautious while driving. I think that no one was following me."

"You think?" She grew more tense. "Matt, you were dead-scared when I saw you for a few minutes. You really think you should be careful about that all the way."

"So, what do you want? Should we run away?" He was enraged and gestured with his hands. "And we have nowhere to go."

Matt tried to calm her down. "Victoria, take a chill pill. Nothing is going to happen."

She was still worried.

Matt consoled her. He said, "I've been here for fifteen minutes, and nothing has happened yet, Victoria." He hugged her, and she felt relaxed.

"Alright, let me search my power bank once. I'll charge my phone, and then I am going to call an electrician. You just stay calm. I'm right here," Matt said.

He went to look for his power bank. After connecting his phone to it, he called an electrician, who was scheduled to come within five minutes.

Then Matt sat on the sofa, engrossed in deep thoughts. 'I don't understand. Why did they lie to me? And the foremost thing is, who gave them that false information about Victoria's death?' His mind was circulating around those thoughts when Victoria came to him and sat by his side. "What's bothering you, my dear?" Matt gave no answer and acted casual. She said, "Are you sure Nina is alive?"

"I saw her with my own eyes, sitting on the wheelchair. Now, she is just like a dummy."

"Poor soul. What kind of life is that?" She moved further to kiss Matt. They kissed.

"Listen dear." Matt cupped her face. "I've been doing my best to make this place a heaven. Please don't ruin it with your overthinking." She nodded. Then, their doorbell rang. Matt soothed her increasing heartbeats by saying that it was the electrician. He kissed her forehead and went to the door. She was getting anxious and sat on the sofa with her trembling fingers. She closed her eyes, took deep breaths, and consoled herself by saying that everything was fine. Just then, Matt's phone buzzed with the ringtone of 'The Nights' by Avicii. It was a call from an electrician.

She got up and went to the phone. No sooner did she pick it up than the man spoke from the other side. "Sir, you haven't mentioned which numbered tower your flat is in. I'm standing down here in-front of towers H1 and H2. Could you tell me which is yours?" Victoria went numb. She threw the phone and shouted, "Matt! Wait..." But it was too late.
