• Chapter 4 •

A red glow surrounded the body of a young girl, sinking into the darkness of a deep pond, blood seeped out of numerous cuts littering her fragile body and mixed with ultramarine water. Inside her head, an unknown being moved around, fighting to survive, its name was Shadow. The red glow further surrounded the now pale girl and created a bubble of air around her almost lifeless form.

Another being entered the girls head and attempted to revive her. She was hardly alive and inches from shaking hands with death. The being once again attempted to revive her, the air supply in the bubble slowly decreasing.

Everything was black. I couldn't see anyone or anything. Was this heaven? Am I dead? In the distance I saw a faint red glow and cautiously made my way towards it. "Shadow? Is that you?" I asked aloud. "I am not Shadow nor am I like her." I dark voice replied. "Who are you?" I asked, beginning to feel scared. "Don't fear, I am not going to hurt you. I'm here to help you." It said soothingly.

I stayed silent walking closer to the light. "How?" I asked. "We do not have much time, your air supply is getting smaller and smaller. I'm here to make a deal with you. I shall save you, if you allow me to become a part of you, like Shadow has." The voice stated calmly. "So, I'm dead?" I asked. "No, not yet, but you will be soon." It said. "What's the catch?" I questioned. "Ah, a smart one you are. You shall allow me to join you, but you must also get revenge." It answered.

"Revenge? On Mark?" I said. "Not just Mark. On everyone who has done you wrong. Don't fret, young one. I have power, and you do too, you just haven't unlocked it yet; I will assist you, but we must hurry." The voice replied. "What are you?" I asked, scared. "I am not human. I am not animal. I do not come from this land. I am from the Underworld." It said. "You're . . . a demon?" my eyes widened. "Of sorts, but I am not here to harm you. Hurry though, your time is running out. I can tell you more if you accept." The demon rushed out. I stared at the odd red glow. I thought of Shadow. "Okay. I accept." I held out my hand.

An agonizing pain fell over me and once again everything was black and I fell into a deep sleep. I felt pin-pricks all over and it felt as if snakes swam through my veins. I could feel water all around me, but I could not see. Shadow was asleep and so my thoughts felt empty. What have I done?

Police surrounded the area. An early morning jogger had heard a loud scream from the woods and dialed 9-1-1. The entire force arrived after another reported seeing fire and hearing what they reported as sounding like domestic violence. A young man, in college perhaps, ran out at the officers.

The police men raised their guns, before the blood on the young adults clothes became clear and three officers ran to aid him. "Are you alright, son?" one of the men asked, an older man who was beginning the grey. "What happened out there?" another man, middle-aged perhaps, asked. "Oh I'm alright, I can't say the same for the brat who was with me though..." the young adult grinned smugly. "What?!" shouted the last officer, a trainee who'd previously remained silent. "Son, is this your blood?" the oldest officer asked cautiously, the extremity of this situation settling in. The young adult remained silent for a few seconds before a crazed grin spread across his bloodied face.

"Have any of you ever killed a man? Ever felt their blood splatter across your face? Ever tasted it?" he asked in a gravelly voice. The men's' eyes widened and they backed up a few steps. Officers in the distance noticed this and raised their gun once again. "Did you . . . did you kill someone?" the middle-aged officer asked, slightly frightened. "It was amazing! The brat said she was my sister but I don't even have one. She kept screaming, oh the screams! We had so much fun! I threw her in the pond when I was done with the brat." He smiled.

The oldest officer slowly stepped toward him, and his smile instantly turned to a frown. "Stay away from me!" he shouted. "What's your name, son?" the officer asked. "It's Mark." He gritted out, tensing. The officer continued asking questions and the young adult gladly shared the details of his crime, completely distracted. The officer slowly inched closer, but Mark noticed. In the blink of an eye, Mark attacked the closest officer to him. BANG! The shot through the forest and the sound of a body tumbling to the ground echoed out. The youngest officer knelt down and felt for a heart-beat. "He's dead." The officer claimed, standing up again.

The police force rolled out, deciding to search for the young girl's body the next day. Marks parents were notified of their losses and began planning the funerals. At the same time, they searched for a new home, not even trying to sell their current one. It rained heavily the next day and harsh winds blew leaves and branches all around. No officers went out that day, and though they didn't dare say it, the officers were glad they didn't have to journey back into the woods.

Andy was easily the most heartbroken; he'd lost both his siblings. His parents had decided it'd be best to call of the search for the body. Everyone knew Mark had killed their daughter and no one wanted to see just how much damage he'd actually done. He already explicitly told the police. The police force released a sigh of relief and carried on. Only four people attended the funerals, the parents, Andy, and an officer. A week later, the family of the two deceased moved far, far away, showing no desire of ever coming back. They took nothing with them and only locked the house before leaving. Andy was not convinced that his sister was dead and so he left her a goodbye note, letting her know where they were going in case she came back. Everything else seemed normal, but was far from it.

"Todays the day." A dark voice said. "You said that yesterday." The voice of a clearly unamused girl relied. "Why don't you just get it over with already?!" another voice chimed in, annoyed. "I don't feel like it." The girl stated. "I can't let you wait any longer! You have to do it today of the deal is off!" the dark voice shouted. "Okay, okay, I'll do it tonight, when I have more cover." The girl replied, falling backwards onto a lumpy couch. "Now let me take a nap. We'll plan the murders out when I wake up." She said, closing her eyes. Darkness filled her vision and she fell into a peaceful sleep, unprepared for the events to come.
