10. Anomaly

I stare at my phone. Megan and her perfect timing. Without even considering taking the call, I switch it off.

"Okay, where were we?" I say as I wrap my arms around him.

His hands glide over my bare back, sending shivers down my spine. "You're not answering your phone?"

His lips brush over my ear, and they slowly make a trail to my cheek. I shrug. "Nah, nothing that can't wait. I have more important things to do."

"So, it wasn't your boyfriend?" His eyebrow raises questioningly.

"What? No!" I say, but when his lips curl into a sensual grin, I know he was testing me. Before I can say anything else, his lips find mine again, and I get lost in our kiss. The taste on his lips is sweet and I blame the mango juice he drank earlier. Our tongues play a sensual and slow game.

I don't know exactly how long we stand there. Long enough to lose every sense of time, I think when I see the moon like a silver dollar, high up in the sky. The air is chilly. When I shiver, Dan pulls me closer to him.

"Shall we go to your place?" Dan asks.

His words make something flutter in my stomach. I don't want to rush things, but I don't want to push him away either. He breaks the silence by saying "Just to get you some clothes that keep you warm."

I nod. I immediately wonder if I'm stupid and naive; of course, this can only lead to one thing. Hand in hand we walk to his car. When we enter the car, I see him wave at someone.

"Who was that?" I say.

"One of my bodyguards."

"Was he keeping an eye on us the whole time?" The thought of someone watching us while we made out, disturbs me.

"Don't worry, they gave us some privacy if that's what you're worried about." He casually ruffles his hair.

"They?" I never noticed this one dude, let alone more of them.

Dan chuckles. "Yeah, there are actually three of them."

Who wouldn't be distracted when Dan was smiling at them, I say to myself, but I still feel like the most unobservant person in the world. When I think about it, it makes sense, no one bothered us during the short walk or during dinner. "Shouldn't they be close around you?"

"Normally yes, but tonight it wasn't really needed."

"And shouldn't you have a chauffeur or something?"

"Why? I like driving this car." He sounds a little hurt.

"I don't know, I never had a date with a guy who had his own security guards. I'm just curious." I say, while my eyes trace his face.

He's so beautiful, I can't believe we just kissed. It's almost as if he's a normal guy, but the fact that he has bodyguards reminds me that his life must be so different than mine. It almost feels as if he tried to make everything tonight as normal as possible. What did I expect, screaming fans, paparazzi shooting pictures, people bothering him during our dinner? I would probably run away as fast as I could if that was the case, but it felt like a normal, romantic first date.

When we arrive at my place, I know right away that's something amiss. Megan and I live in a two-story building. On the ground floor is a shop and our apartment has a door next to the shop window, the whole street is like this, downstairs shops, upstairs apartments. We don't share our door with anyone else, all the inhabitants have their own entrance, so when I see ours stand wide open, I curse under my breath.

"Is there something wrong?" Dan looks concerned.

"The door is open," I say. He just looks confused at me.

"I'm sure I closed it." I almost start to panic. "Please, tell me you saw me close that door."

"I think so." He looks worried. "I'm not sure actually."

I bite my lip. "Okay, I'll check if someone forced the lock."

I walk slowly to the open door, but before I reach it Dan grabs my hand. "Stop being a hero. Just call the cops."

I shake my head. "I'm just checking the door, maybe it's Megan who left it open. I don't want to call the cops, because my friend was sloppy."

But the door is forced. And worse, there are traces of blood all over the place. "Okay, now it's time to call the cops," I say and I grab my phone. When I switch it on, it starts buzzing immediately. My phone is flooded with messages and missed calls and they're all Megan's. I start to open the messages. There are dozens of them, all basically saying the same thing.

"Please call me."

"Eli, if you read this, call me back."

"Please come home."

"Help me."

As soon as I read the last message, I storm in and run up the stairs. There's only one thought in my mind. Meg is in the apartment and she needs help.

"Eli, wait!" Dan says, but he's moving right behind me.

"It's my friend. She did something stupid and she needs help." I say as calmly as possible, while I keep moving.

There are bloody handprints all over the walls of the stairs. I follow the prints through the apartment. They lead to our bathroom, where I find Meg, lying on the floor.

The room is a mess. Meg's bloody handprints are all over the place, if you told me she killed someone here, I would believe you. Someone tried to puke in the toilet but missed the thing completely. And Meg just lies there face down on the ground that's covered in puke and blood. Her dress is wrinkled and shoved up high above her thighs. Her hair is a sticky mess. If her body wasn't shaking now and then I would have thought she was dead.

I kneel next to her. She shudders when I touch her. A shivery breath leaves her mouth. The smell of alcohol is almost strong enough to make me drunk by breathing the air.

"Eli," she says as she opens her eyes. Her eyes are bloodshot, her makeup is smeared all over her face.

Dan appears in the doorway. "Wow, what happened here?" he says.

Megan begins to sob and I take her in my arms. "I don't know, but I don't think there's any imminent danger, other than makeup stains on my dress," I say to him.

"I'll wait in the kitchen, just in case someone else shows up." His face looks slightly pale, which isn't that weird considering the state of the bathroom.

"O Eli, your date. I completely forgot," Meg says slowly, as soon as he disappears. It sounds like she has difficulty saying the words.

I shrug, but I still remember every word she said last Monday. And the funniest thing is that she thinks that she goes on a date with him. "Yeah, right," I say. "Why does our place look like a crime scene?"

"I forgot my keys," Megan says softly. "I just punched the door until it opened." She shows me her hands. Her knuckles are a bloody mess, some of her nails are torn. I quickly check if she broke something, but it's just bruises and scratches.

"Great. Just what I wanted to do tonight. You know our neighbor has a key for emergencies, right?" I say as I bandage her hands.

"I'm so sorry," Meg says. "I broke up with Nick. I think I left my bag at his place. I freaked out when you didn't pick up your phone." She starts to sob again.

"You broke up with him?" I say although this news shouldn't surprise me. I think her lipstick is even more long-lasting than her relationships, but she rarely breaks down like this.

She nods, while tears roll down her face. Maybe it's the alcohol that makes her this upset.

When I'm done bandaging her hands, I turn on the shower. "Okay, Meg, you will feel better after this. I'll get you some clean clothes."

But when I try to walk away, she wraps her arms around me. "Please don't leave, Eli."

"Don't worry, silly. I'll be back before you know it and you need some clean stuff." I try to unwrap her arms.

"No, no, you're leaving me here, alone. Just like everyone else." She's keeps holding on to me. Something tells me this isn't about me leaving the bathroom.

I gently pat her back. "We talk later, okay?" She had too much alcohol, she needs a shower and a good night's sleep. She probably won't remember half of what happened tonight. Finally, I manage to wrestle myself loose from her embrace. For someone who's barely conscious, her grip is quite powerful.

"I will be right back, okay?" I say when I walk through the door. I'm not waiting for her answer

Dan's sitting in the kitchen as he told me. It surprises me he's still here. I don't know what I would have done if we went to his house and everything was covered in blood.

"I'm so sorry about this mess," I say. He stands up and walks to me

"Why? It's not your fault, is it?" he says. "What happened to her?"

"Apparently she broke up with her so-called boyfriend." I sigh. "She drank too much and then she freaked out."

"But she will be fine? She doesn't need to go to the hospital?" He takes my hand and pulls me closer.

"No, she just hurt her knuckles when she tried to open the door. She just needs rest." I say softly.

"Good, as I want to kiss you so badly," he says. When his lips meet mine, the thought crosses my mind that this is probably my weirdest date I've ever had.
