Chapter 6
This was it. The moment the—Dream did a quick head count—five had been waiting for. Dream, Ink, and Cross held their props, skepticism starting to seep in despite it being partly Cross's idea. Dream, however, swallowed his pride and put on the pig costume Blue had found for him. Ink eyed his grass skirt and flower lei warily. Cross wondered if he could be on extraction duty with Error so he didn't have to wear the stupid palm tree costume. Where had Blue even found these things? Error was crouching beside the stairs, waiting for the others to get their schist together. Blue was next to him, waiting for his cue to start running. He was currently on a sugar high, so he'd probably be in Nightmare's dungeon and back in maybe two minutes.
Blue tossed Dream the bright red apple that he was supposed to put in his mouth. He barely caught it, then he sighed. "Aren't we going just a little overboard with this?" Blue didn't respond. He was literally vibrating with the sheer amount of pure sugar going through his system. Ink shrugged. "The sooner we get this done, the sooner we can rescue Orange and get out of these." The artist took off his scarf and tossed over to where Error was. It was so big it landed on the him and Blue, effectively smothering them in heavy brown cloth. Dream watched as they tried to maneuver the thing off of their heads, with little success.
When that was over, and everyone was ready, the real fun began.
"So, how do we get their attention?"
Cross and Ink stared at Dream like they hadn't thought of that.
So, naturally, Cross broke down the door. What followed went something like this:
Cross: HEY ASSHATS! GET YOUR BUTTS OUT HERE!
*Three insane skeletons jumped from higher windows and landed on the ground, looking pissed. Horror had some red stuff (most likely blood) around his mouth. Dust had what looked like barbecue sauce on his hands. Killer actually had a half-eaten BLT between his jaws. Nightmare, however, was nowhere to be seen.*
Ink + Cross: LU'AU!
Ink: *with admirable enthusiasm* If you're hungry for a hunk of fat and juicy meat
Ink: Eat my buddy Dream here because he is a treat
*Dust, Horror, and Killer all looked murderous. Dust summoned a sharp purple bone, Horror hefted his axe, and Killer equipped his knife.*
Ink: Come on down and dine
Ink: On this tasty swine
Ink: All you have to do is get in line
*With the three Bad Sanses distracted, Blue vaulted over the railing and dashed into the castle.*
Ink: Aaaare you achin'
Cross: *with a chaste wiggle* (Yup, yup, yup)
Ink: Foooor some bacon?
Cross: (Yup, yup, yup)
Ink: Heeee's a big pig
Cross: (Yup, yup)
Ink: You could be a big pig too!
The Bad Sanses charged, weapons raised. Killer had scarfed down his sandwich, and now he was screaming bloody murder. Ink, Dream, and Cross threw their costumes onto the ground and prepared to fight.
Meanwhile, Blue was trying to be Sonic. He was going somewhere around 15 mph (roughly 24 km per hour), which was helpful with all of the long, empty halls. It took him maybe sixty seconds to get to the dungeon. To his relief, Orange was not only in one of the first cells, but he was also unhurt. "B-bro?" he asked incredulously as the smaller skeleton busted the cell door. "HURRY, BROTHER!" he urged. "THE OTHERS CAN ONLY HOLD NIGHTMARE'S GANG FOR SO LONG!" Orange ran after his bro, who had slowed down so he could keep up. "I THINK THIS MIGHT BE OUR QUICKEST RESCUE ATTEMPT SO FAR," he chirped, glad to have his brother back. But the weren't out of the woods yet.
When they exited the woods castle, Error pulled everyone to the stairs leading to and from the castle and they started running. Cross and Ink did a little bow as they were extracted. Dream gave them a friendly wave. Blue yelled something intelligible, probably "ANOTHER VICTORY, FOR THE MAGNIFICENT BLUEBERRY!"
The stairs were unnecessarily long. About halfway down, Error lost one of his slippers. He cursed and made to get it. "Error, leave it!" Cross yelled. The insanity trio was only a few steps behind them. "H3ll n0!" he retorted, "1'm n07 93771n9 50m3 cr33py-455 pr1nc3 70 f0ll0w m3 h0m3!" But he picked up his slipper and ran, not bothering to put it on. When they reached the bottom, an annoyed Nightmare appeared in front of them. "I can't leave for ten minutes without something happening, can I?" he complained. In his hand was—a McDonalds bag? "They sang Disney at us!" Dust screeched. Nightmare rolled his eye light. "And you were obviously too stupid to realize it was a distraction."
An embarrassed silence came from the trio. The five rescuers and the former prisoner got into fighting stances. Error summoned his strings, Ink readied Broomie, Cross pointed at the trio behind them with his knife, Blue summoned a halo of bones, Dream knocked an arrow of light in his bow, and Orange fired up his blasters. For a second, everything was still.
Then, Nightmare attacked, shooting his tentacles at everyone except Error. Why? Because he only has five tentacles. He was going to miss SOMEONE, it just happened to be Error.
Orange and Blue teleported away like pros, while Cross jumped out of the way and Ink and Dream rolled. The insanity trio raised their weapons and attacked with all of their anti-Disney fury. Dream came up on one knee and loosed an arrow at Nightmare, who dodged.
Cross and Horror crossed weapons, axe on...giant knife/sword/thing. Error and Blue faced off against Killer, who looked like even he was having trouble against his former ally. Orange and Ink we're kicking Dust's boney butt with creativity and...laziness? Judgement? Fruit? Either way, it was going pretty well.
But Dream wasn't doing so good. Twice already, he had received bad wounds from his brother, who kept out of Dream's arrows. Now, even if Dream could hit Nightmare, he was so weak it wouldn't make much difference. At the moment, he was backed against a large, dead tree, with Nightmare closing in on him. None of his friends saw him, and they couldn't have helped if they did. Dream was going to die.
Then, in the daze caused by exhaustion and blood loss, Dream's eye lights strayed to one of the windows on Nightmare's castle. It was the only one with bars on the inside. What if he...?
It was his only chance. Weakly he knocked another arrow, and pulled the string back on his bow. Nightmare laughed. "You aren't seriously still trying to fight, are you?" he asked incredulously. Dream said nothing as he raised his bow. "You don't even have the strength to hurt me!" Nightmare exclaimed, still laughing. Dream swallowed. His vision was getting blurry. Nightmare closed in for the kill, just as Dream shifted his aim from his brother to the window, and let the arrow fly.
For a moment, everything was silent as everyone watched it soar. The shattering of glass broke the silence more effectively than a pun. All of the Bad Sanses ran to the castle, swearing under their breath. Even Nightmare left Dream and teleported to the room, although not without giving the guardian of positivity one last look of, 'this isn't over.'
Dream didn't see what happened next. All he saw was the ground hurtling towards his face as he blacked out.
